Top Gun: Maverick impressions from CinemaCon.

Took my wife to see it on Saturday night. What a fucking film! This is the kind of film I have been craving for so long! It took me back to an era where films where more concerned about entertainment than trying to force feed you bullshit. I'm definitely going to see it again on the big screen. More of this Hollywood and less of the absolute crap you have been giving up for near on 10 years now.

There was a lot...off about the pilot crew in TGM versus TG IMHO. Even more so when the TGM pilots are all supposed to be post TG graduates and served out on deployments...right? None of them really felt like real world top shot pilots, just older people acting like teenagers mostly. Contrasted against the TG pilots in the school from TG and the confidence and cockiness difference is paplable.
Very much so. (Like the infamous (ad adlibbed) iceman “bullshit” when at their first meeting with Charlie)).

All that stuff just felt a little more natural.

But still, small gripe. Trying to recreat chemistry is just not possible and if a movie sequel is relying on that, it won’t be great.

The pilots in Top Gun are already out on deployments too. They've already proven themselves to be the best in their squadrons, which is why they get the opportunity to go to Top Gun in the first place.

I think his point was just that ALL of them (not just Hangman), lacked that cockiness/comradery/frenimes/rivalry that was entertaining in the first one. Also, the lack of that with the other pilots made Hangman stick out even more....

Again, such a small gripe. The movie was clearly a Maverick and Goose's kid movie. Which was totally cool. We just don't have those throw away lines that are infinitely quotable like:

"And I said to Hollywood....Where'd he go?"
"And Hollywood went Wheerrreee whoooo'd gooooo?"
"And he was was laughing at us, right on the radio."
"That was me laughing dickhead."
"We won!"

Or, the awesome Anthony Edwards cackle:

Just finished watching.
Tom Cruise is a legend. Such a great entertainer.
Great movie, script and emotional beats hit.
That dog fight at the end.
Holy fuck at the enemy manuever. An audible 'holy shit' left my mouth
Visceral, kinetic.

Kills me to see these guys moving through life --- but thats life.
RIP Iceman

Everyone keeps saying the dogfights are the highlights but for me it was when
Maverick got removed as instructor and I was thinking Penny's admiral father was just going to pull some strings to get him back in instead of Ice. The next scene is the pilots getting the updated mission parameters but all of a sudden the F/A-18 blip shows up. Maverick BTFOs everyone and makes them a believer
Pure fucking awesome. Nice callback to the opening with the Darkstar. Hangman's reaction to the entire thing was just priceless.

The fact that top gun graduates had a lot to learn is believable.

In this podcast, a real top gun instructor recalls that on his first day as a instructor, another pilot showed him things he did not think were possible

Agreed. It was a great moment that progressed the story exceptionally well. The writing in this movie was spot on.

He just said on Jocko's podcast that the skill difference between a Top Gun graduate and a seasoned instructor is generally night and day. The instructors normally can torch the students in the same fashion as the film and he was actually the consultant on the film.

are in a big trouble
Saw it last night what a movie. I'll be buying the 4k version when it's out and I might go see it again.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Just got back from seeing it.
This is a very rare instance when a film that is made after 2010 is actually better then the original.
Love it, absolutely fantastic!
Also nice nod to Labyrinth when you meet Penny (Jennifer Connely)
David Bowie was playing in the background 😂

Also that opening...if you didn't know you'd think you was watching the original.

Plus and this is a BIG plus.
No woke BS!

Does anyone know how much of the planes scenes are real?

For example the F14. I know they found one in storage and used it for the hangar scene. So was everything else CGI?

It was excellent CGI. I knew going into the movie that the only handful of intact F-14 museum pieces still in the States would never fly again but those scenes had me second guessing as I watched.

I agree it looked fantastic! Its too bad the Navy crushed them all and went to each museum and gate guardian and permanently disabled them from ever being airworthy again.

One of the best cinema experiences I've ever had - no hyperbole. If you like action films and don't see this you are really missing out.

Somehow retrospectively makes the first film better while exceeding it in every way imaginable.

Tom Cruise has to be one of the last remaining superstars where it is the actor not the franchise that draws people in and say what you want about him he makes sure his movies are done well.

The only airworthy Tomcats left are in Iran. So yes if it’s moving it’s CGI.

I'm curious about the CG use in the film. All the actors were in the backseats of dual seat super hornets, so did they perspective correct all the shots to move them forward in the aircraft, or did they just leave it figuring few people know what it would look actually look like. And then for the F14 in cockpit scenes at the end, did they film those in the Super hornets and CG the cockpit around the actors, or did they switch to a studio cockpit for those scenes?

I was really hyping for this movie since they stealth revealed the trailer at Comic Con in 2019.

After 3 years of waiting/hyping every single piece of info of it, i bought tickets for the premiere on may 26, me and my girlfriend got fucking COVID on Wednesday 25 after went unscathed for more than 2 years of pandemic, reimbursed my tickets and only went back to the cinema this last Saturday.

And what a great experience it was. Besides some cringe dialogs, some nerdy pet peeves and the "negative charisma" of some of the new pilots (we are the best, who's gonna teach us?)... I love every bit of it. A pure breed old school blockbuster like we didn't have in a long time but I still prefer the first one (by a small margin and considering that they made it in 86). But given first is one of my favorite movie ever...

The F-14 scenes, that small Iceman cameo and the rolling scissors to the deck were the best scenes of the movie. Even the completely unnecessary Darkstar prologue give us some heavy First Man vibes, filled with cool small details.

Tom is the last real old school movie star of our generation.

The F-14 scenes with all that flips and switches and bitching Bettys/audio is an love letter to anyone who enjoy simulation / DCS.
CW Lemoine (F16/18 pilot) just did an awesome behind the scenes with one of the guys that worked VFX at Top Gun Maverick

They really did a wonderful job.

ps. Curioulsy my favorite scenes were all CGI's :)

I very much appreciate that VFX artist calling in... but man its rough listening to him, he's not very articulate.

Seriously can't wait for the release just to see all the behind the scenes stuff. There best be hours of making ofs for this!

Hmmm. I question if this "Fred" guy is fake... the stuff he's talking about regarding the F14 being 100% CG, goes against the set photos and information I've heard regarding those shots.

90% of the flying is real. The fake stuff were the f14, su-57s and the darkstar. The rest was mostly real with some editing tricks.

Not even close to 90%. There are a LOT of composition shots, 1 real jet flying with 3-4 cgi jets on screen, a lot security bubble violations that the Navy wouldn't allow them to do it, accelerated passages, etc.

From Lemoine "Small correction/clarification from a commenter during the live chat (who claims to be the head VFX guy): The TOMCAT was the refurbished one I showed the picture of and they did tow it around, but as Fred said, they replaced it with a CG version. I think he didn't quite understand my question (he couldn't see the picture that I added while editing this video). Just want to be accurate!"

And i know that they used the F-14 for the carrier shots (net/barricade landing) by some pre production photos and even that they probably did some post production. I believe that the real museum F-14s in the US don't even have the cockpit and instruments intact so they probably were only used for external shots.

ps. His name is in the credits. I think is this guy:

It was beyond great work, especially with the F-14 and some of the close in shots like the landing on the carrier.

agreed! the only F14 shot that felt CG wasn’t because of the CG being bad, it’s because the shot would have been impossible to do in camera. (The shot where the F14 is firing it’s gun flying right at the camera).

And people were claiming there s no CGI in this film.
^____^
What? Who has ever claimed that lol.

There's literally missiles blowing up airplanes and Tom flying on the edge of outer atmosphere. People claiming there is no CGI are not right in the head.

I've seen posts on here putting shit on comic book hero movies due to the lack of CGI in Maverick. Anyone who watched Maverick knows that's bullshit though.

It's unfortunate that they had to use the F-18 due to the need for the two seater, because I would have loved to see the F-35 go up against the Su-57.

According to Variety, they did find a F-14 at the San Diego Air and Space Museum and restored it enough to look semi-functional. The dogfighting scenes with the F-14, is not real, obviously.

The Fighter Pilot Podcast is doing a series of interviews with the crew that worked in TGM

Last week was with the air stunts coordinator, this week is the navy advisor.

Whew, what a ride!

I feel the need…the need for speed.

Amazing that a sequel 30+ years later tops the original. Fantastic movie!!

Incredible film. Loved the f14 sequence with rooster. Bizarre to see another great blockbuster movie again in this day and age. Probably the last example for another 10 years, if ever.

Just got back from seeing it for the first time.

Center seats at IMAX.

omfg that was incredible. I honestly don't know if I ever had as much fun at a movie as I did tonight.

I could gush paragraphs about what I loved about it, from the visuals to Cruise to Val... but it's late. Maybe another time.

Pay attention, filmmakers. That is how you make something new while paying proper homage to an older film.

10 out of frickin 10.

You guys must be really starved for films or have had your brains battered by cookie-cutter Disney for the last ten years. I enjoyed it but it's hardly a 10/10.

I mean no doubt. In a desert of absolute shit this was a certified oasis. If it came out before the prevalence of The Message™ and Hollywood's insistence of subverting and destroying all of its once great franchises we'd probably not hold up Maverick as high as we do now. These days however something like Fast & The Furious In The Sky is pretty much akin to Apocalypse Now or 2001: A Space Odyssey lol.

saw it last night. What an amazing film and took me by complete surprise.

Tom Cruise is a great actor imo. This film is beautifully shot, some incredible cgi.

The more I think about it the basic structure of the film is super silly, and did they somehow have the exact same geography near their San Diego base as in norrhkoreairanistan to practice all those bombing runs?

But, like any well made movie with engaging characters, I don't care about that stuff.

They didn't, it was all mapped through a virtual simulation during the training.

It’s not Citizen Kane or anything but it does exactly what it set out to do and gave us exactly what we wanted out of a sequel. If you don’t care about the original or for real life aerial effects then yeah I could see it not landing (lul) but I think one’s gotta respect a movie exactly nailing what it was going for.
