UK Retailer GAME is dead | Brera's Lament

My mistake was not getting out at the right time.
Your real mistake was in not realising that it made far more sense for any potential buyer to wait until GAME hit administration. You kept waiting for some massive upswing that was never going to come.

The sad thing is that you were warned.

I'm just gonna pop into this thread at 7am tomorrow to see if the firesale has started.

edit - motherfucking Let's Tap for 48p? Bargain.

Also, my boss found some retro stock during his clear out upstairs. Good haul or greatest haul? All this for £13.50;

Awesome haul!! I remember buying a mint copy of Grandia II from Gamestation a few years back for about ~£18 only after trading in Farenheit on PS2 for £1 trade-in credit - it was worth it! Farenheit is shit!

Indeed, just looking back over the thread I first advised Brera to sell at 4.2p when his losses were less than £100.

Why can't my local have these kind of deals ><

If they have a copy on display at a higher price, get them to scan it in. My local had one on display at £45, I said "Hmm, I got a text from a mate that it was £20 in other stores", the guy ran it through the till & voila!

inFamous 2 for £8 as well. Think I'm done now, added a huge chunk of games to my backlog, and Batman was a double-dip as well (on the same platform, no less!)

...

Unless they put up a ridiculous price for hardware.

Had another look for some cheap games but to be honest there either wasn't any great games or they weren't that much cheaper then they normally are.

I did however finally pick up The Beatles Rock Band for 98p so i cant argue with that :)

So if say things don't get better, will it turn into a woolies "80% off fucking everything, please come in. TAKE IT IF YOU HAVE TO." Or will it just be returned to the publishers? I have no idea how retail works

People are stupid. The employees deserve none of this. If people want to direct their jokes and ire at anyone it should be the CEO and the rest of the board who have done a seriously poor job over the past 5 years.

That stinks. Call the fat cats in head office to gloat if you must, they set the patronising policies and laughable pricing structure.

Yeah exactly. Game Group are fucking terrible in every way, shape, and form, but the poor blokes/girls behind the counter don't deserve snotty remarks. They just do as they're told

Vitas will definitely be returned to Sony at the very least

That was probably the bargain of the week for me! The picking of the carcass resulted in:

Bulletstorm (360)
Halo 3
ODST
Killzone 2
Beatles Rock Band (PS3)
EyePet (for the missus)
Brutal Legend
Yakuza 3
Mad World
Arkham City CE
inFamous 2

All for under £50. Can't whinge at that!

This. When I was picking up Arkham/inFamous tonight, the manager served me, he seemed amazed at the prices and was genuinely pretty gutted about the situation. I said to him I'd been reading stuff today & said that I feel sorry for the guys in the stores more than anything

^ Great haul there, CheckeredKnight. Congrats.

Now the BBC News channel is reporting that GAME Group "might be in a teensy-weensy bit of trouble", with their share price making baby Brera cry. And I thought the workers were always the last to know...:p

Ah, this is gonna be a testing few days, waiting for my money to come on Friday and hoping there's still some scraps left...XD

Well Woolworths were their own distributor so they owned the stock they were selling, Game have a lot of their new stock on credit which will be repossessed by the creditors (publishers) in case of bankruptcy. The stock they actually own is mostly pre-owned which they have already discounted quite heavily over the last few days. Also remember that Sony have stuck their "property of Sony UK" all over the Vita and I would be surprised if any new hardware orders from any of Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft were by any other method.

Basically Game own very little of the new stock so anyone hoping for a firesale of new stock shouldn't hold their breath.

Gamestation's website is terrible. All I want is a list of in stock games sorted by price, and to display the maximum number of games per page. Evidently I can't do that, because all of the prices are jumbled up despite the fact my search settings are supposed to have been applied.

As someone who's done the odd bit of web development here and there it infuriates me - if you're developing a site for a well-known company and it's in that state, why would you even put it live?

Many things can cause a site like this. If the client is a pain in the arse, if they micromanage or have difficulty paying, the developers could start to do less work, and care more about getting whatever out in any state, just so they can end the contract. Sometimes money simply runs out. And, of course, sometimes the developers are crap :)

All of you that have picked up Bulletstorm, shame on you for not getting it earlier. Also, congratulations on picking up such a fantastic game for next to nothing. That game was the most fun I've had playing a console for quite some time.

Nice one, was just wondering really!

Hmm. I hope GAME are still around come pay day. I get my usual wage and a £1500 bonus this month. I could pick up some hardware for shit's and gigs if the price is right.

I haven't really been following this that much beyond reading OPs of GAME shutdown threads but why exactly are they so cash strapped? UK has a pretty healthy market for games and the game thrift shop model seems to be pretty profitable.

Maturity, bitches.
All that retro tat. Shame there are no GameStations near me.

To those that have been recently, is it even worth popping into the London Oxford Street branch? It's the only one I have access to before Saturday.
Wii and DS sections were disappointing. Don't know about the other systems.

I went in Saturday it was getting rather sparse but is a "main" store will get stock sent from smaller stores/warehouse to sell through. Get in ASAP though, not many bargains to pick up.

All the decent stuff has gone it seems. A few cheap 360 titles left, but all the exciting bits and pieces are long gone. No cheap consoles or MS points left.

This is what I'm waiting for, I can't imagine what treasures lie in the various stores back rooms. What region store do you work at btw dude?

I work at the Grimsby (Lincs) GameStation. This is the last of the retro stock. Though, we still have some old PS1 titles and a Sonic R on the shelves atm (but nothing of note really.) I'm sure if you ask nicely in any store "Do you have any old retro stock lying around" they will look for you. We want sales. There's no use having this stuff lying around in a stock room, it wont sell itself.

Sony sends them items on "license", GAME don't own the stock. They are merely selling Sony's stock for them. Cue the high prices on all the vita games, they can't make profit on the things they didn't buy in bulk.

GAME are still screwed in this situ sadly.

Well the proper term is consignment distribution, where a joint license in place to product both the distributor and retailer, in case a product flops.

I paid a visit to the two Games and the Gamestation in my area. The "Spring Clean" was on and the stores were busier than normal, but overall it seemed business as usual - the staff were in a good mood and the shelves were arranged to give the illusion of plenty of stock (they were emptier than usual, but to a passing/casual customer they'd look OK).

They had some new PC games in from smaller publishers, and they had coming soon/pre-order boxes up for a some of the big titles due next month.

I picked up a few random 2.98 games that were on my list of "I'd be embarrassed to buy this at full price" titles - mostly Disney movie adaptations - they always intrigue me, but I always end up regretting buying them in the end. Also nabbed a second copy of Gears 3 (the full box for £9, not the 48p not for resale, sadly), and Casino Royale on Blu Ray for £3.98.

I've said this in every thread to do with Game, but I want my local branches to survive. I like the staff, their prices are usually decent (not the best, but I am willing to accept £1 or £2 more for the convenience of knowing they'll have the games I want - it would cost me more than that to travel to the next nearest "good" shop), and their selection is miles better than anywhere else in the area.

I went in Game/Gamestation today and looked for some MS point cards reduced but they were all normal RRP from what i could tell.

I couldn't bring myself to ask the staff whether or not they were cheaper than this as 'thats what HUKD says'.

:(

So I spent my £40 (hurrah!) alongside £2ish on my debit card.

Picked up Arkham City 360 for £20 (preowned, so need to find/buy a code for content), Rayman Origins PS3 for £15 and Crysis 2 preowned for £7.98

Not as good a haul as many on here but feel quite happy with what I've got. My local store had loads of 360 preowneds, but the PS3 section was looking very bare - probably more new stock than used at this point.

I've heard that Game's margin on Sony products are less than 1.5% for any newly bought stock.

I'm not arguing with you but if TM is a gigantic flop and Game Group could request Sony to remove all TM from the stores, where they could place preowned products and get the shelf space back. But talking about returns on what Game Group are getting I've heard 3 separate figures for hardware, software and accessories.

Argh meant the sequel! Arkham City indeed.

Although saying that, I'm now annoyed at myself for leaving my 360 controller at home home - will have to play Rayman tonight.
