Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

Just the size and options of the encounters is what I'm referring to. The gameplay encounters feel like that x 3.

And the platforming/exploring is amazing due to the grapple hook, with the exception of some early parts.

GOTY, I'm calling it.
GOTY! Easily. Could be game of the generation of TLOU 2 doesn't surpass it.

Driving sections are just amazing as well, we really should get an UnKarted game...

Wonder if we'll ever find out what the changes were to the game after Amy left.

Wonder if Neil and Bruce really did right the ship based off these impressions...

Well, one of the things they let slip about UC4 when they first came onto the project was how big some spaces were that they lost all sense of pacing.

Maybe Amy wanted to go open world.

*shrug*' I've played each game probably three times through each. (Uncharted 2 maybe more?) Still find it all fairly forgettable.

Honestly, you won't be disappointed at all, puzzles can be a bit mind boggling but that's my only gripe tbh. Everything from the combat, sounds, voice acting, graphics, animation etc have been improved so much it just blows any other UC game away.

Literally everything about this game has been improved in just about every possible way it could be.

Edit: Like the Madagascar demo scene is just crazy big, far more expansive than what they shown. It's just FUCKING CRAZY.

I'm going through that section right now and the majority of the exploration feels almost pointless. So many places I can drive the jeep but almost all areas seem to be worthless unclimbable rocks.

I spent over an hour doing optional stuff. Finally a good reason for treasures. Blown away right now.

I don't want to give away specifics but while a ton of it is optional there is tons of great gameplay to be had all over.

Oh interesting, I didn't hear that before. Do you have a link to an interview with that by any chance?

The animation is insane.

Pointless? Worthless unclimbable rocks? There's obviously set routes to get to the next area but there's quite a few hidden places to visit within the big areas. There's also quite a bit of "lore pages" to be found as well which gives insight into the overall point of them being there.

This is as good of a place as any to ask this, they have a triple pack for 24.99 that says its for a single-player add-on and two multiplayer packs. I thought all the multiplayer content was going to be free? It was put on the store 9/4/2015 so have ND changed what this pack includes? I'm not sure if I should purchase it now or just wait until this fall when the DLC will drop?

Probably like 5-10% of the optional areas I bother driving that jeep to in the past hour are anything more than pointless, unclimbable pretty geometry. Maybe I haven't found whatever pages you're talking about though so maybe I am missing something.

All MP maps will be free, not all MP content

the hit reaction tiers with killzone 2.
youtube did not do the game justice in terms of image quality
the game looks better than MOST games on Ultra on PC.

It seems like the only thing I could really see someone having a difference of opinion on was... the story?? Well not even most, just one person... It seems like there's an unanimous agreement that this game's gameplay, visuals and scale are something else. Idk what to say for AKyemi but hey, someone's always going to be disappointed. Hate it had to b him.

Akyemi's opinion is fringe, looking at his ranking list. Complete opposite for me on a lot of his categories.

I think MOST people would agree that TLOU had better storytelling than pretty much any game to date, let alone any Naughty Dog game. TLOU was like last-gen's 'MGS' moment to me in terms of a massive leap up for the industry in terms of storytelling.

So, for UC4 to be compared to TLOU in that regard is a huge compliment, as I felt the series could have certainly be elevated with better presentation.

Which is great to me, because I actually prefer the fast paced action/traversal of Uncharted's gameplay a lot more than I do the slower nature of TLOU.

These impressions. :o

I love that, even though I've watched the trailers and the three sections they've played through since they announced the game, I still feel kind of like I'm going in blind. There's still so much I don't know and it feels like a mystery. I can't wait to play it.

Anyone here whos played both this and the XBONE Tomb Raider? How's it compare to that? Loved that game.

Me neither. Like holy shit these graphics.

It's all smoke and mirrors running on what is essentially a netbook. It really goes to show you how talented this studio is. A lot of studios are going to want to know what type of approximations and tricks Naughty Dog used to pull of some of the shaders and lighting work here.

You ain't seen nothing yet ;-)

For those that have beat the game, how many chapters are there in total? I just started chapter 17, wondering if i am close or not...

UC4 is definitely better than UC2. No doubt about it. The sheer effort Naughty Dog have put into this game is unbelievable. I'm still only about half way through and it's just getting better and better!

The sheer size of the environments are crazy at times. Like wow wtf size compared to any other UC game. At times it looks real, as in a weird, looks better than real life sort of way. Naughty Dog have really out done themselves.

Sublime gunplay.

Graphics that will floor you.

Emotional character moments.

Optional areas with hidden lore items/treasure tucked away.

Better than UC2.

Up there with TLOU.

Best work of ND yet.

Five more days. I can take thiiis.

I'm not sure if I got that right. In the MP stream, they said if you're a lone wolf you are better off with unranked matches. Does that mean the ranked matches are for parties only?

Is there a difference between ranked and unranked?

it just means that in ranked matches are more focused on team play. so yeah, if you're just going solo into a game vs a team with a party you're probably getting wrecked. but that goes for pretty much all MP games.

unranked play probably doesn't contribute towards leaderboards, stats etc

9 hours in and the gameplay is just fantastic. All the new elements really come together to make this feel like a big step up from past uncharted games. If you saw the big preview from a month or so back well it's as awesome as you can imagine.

There is no way for me to give proper impressions without getting into the pacing, I will not go into any specifics at all but some don't want to know how it's paced. So I'll spoiler tag it.

I have yet to hit one of the major epic setpieces. There has been a lot of great smaller moments but none of the epic stuff the series is known for yet. The openness and freedom of some areas and gunfights leads to a less intense game at times. While this is not necessary a negative because the options allow for far better gameplay possibilities it will split some people.

If everyone is looking for the big negative in uncharted if I were a betting man I think the slow pacing of the start of this game is going to be the most divisive thing. Now I don't expect this to be an even split, I think the grand majority will love this, but a small group will miss the insane fast paced non stop action nature of uncharted 2. Maybe the last half is like that but this first half is probably the slowest paced uncharted I have played in terms of action.

My final thoughts:

This is a very meaty game. Total playtime was 19 hours on Hard, with about 17 of that actual gameplay and 2 from trying to solve puzzles (and failing) and using photo mode. I got 50/109 treasures and about half of the journals, notes, and optional conversations. If you are playing on Normal, which I strongly recommend, and just play for the story and gameplay (no treasure searching, etc), it will take you about 14-16 hours. This is as long, if not longer, than The Last of Us.

My main concern going into the game was the tonal change due to the new creative director, but it turned out to be unfounded. This has all the hallmarks of previous Uncharted games: awesome gunplay, platforming, banter, set pieces, and best-in-class graphics. This game has the most set pieces of any Uncharted game, so you can ignore whoever said otherwise. There are more serious elements than we're used to seeing in Uncharted games, but they enhance the story and make you feel like you're actually doing something for a purpose. You're not just a treasure hunter or a mass murderer (heh).

The pacing issues that I felt hamstrung the first parts of the game thankfully disappeared soon after and did not reappear. There is only one spot near the end that featured waves of enemies, and that was only frustrating because I was playing on Hard. Other than that, this game had the perfect amount of enemies at all times.

The rope mechanic is incredible. It adds a whole new layer to not only traversal but also combat. It's thrilling to use every time you have the chance, and thankfully there's hundreds of chances. There's also multiple ways to attack every encounter and platforming segment due to the rope capabilities. It's a real treat.

The only thing I didn't like about the game was the soundtrack. There's music, yes, but none of it is memorable in any way. It's merely serviceable. I can listen to Uncharted 2's soundtrack and immediately know where the music played in the game. I can also throw it on just to chill out and relax. I can't say the same for this game. Huge disappointment there.

At the end of the day, I still prefer Uncharted 2 because it's a tighter story with an infinitely better soundtrack and a better cast of characters. And since it's a shorter game, it's easier to replay. I can't see anyone replaying Uncharted 4 unless it's for trophies. It just doesn't have the same flow as Uncharted 2.

Now, on to the multiplayer where I'll spend the rest of my life.

Nice impressions. Only thing I find odd is saying UC2 is better for replays which I understand due to length and whatnot but wouldn't it feel jarring to go back to that gameplay wise??

Not really because there's nothing wrong with the gameplay and you still play Uncharted 4 like a cover shooter most of the time.
