It wouldn't surprise me to see them slightly truncated and have the series end with two 8 episode seasons or something like that. I imagine this might also be a negotiation tactic on their part.
The amount that goes into the show at this point is staggering, and as the scale increases, it's more difficult for them to put out 10 episodes on an annual basis.
Yup. It's similar to a lot of HBO's recent dramas (see: Lewis & Clark, True Detective, Vinyl, etc...). I can understand some of the complaints about the writing on GoT, but on the overall production side D&D continue to keep the show on course. They're running a massive production and as far as I know they're hitting their deadlines and budgets year after year. Of course, with the ratings the way they are and the anemic alternatives from HBO's drama department, HBO brass aren't likely to complain about production issues if they have them.
