Because Pence was never able to rise above or defend Trump on anything, while Kaine kept on the attack against Trump.

Flipping through the main channels now and the narrative seems to be Kaine was needlessly aggressive but landed some good blows. Haven't heard anything about how Pence couldn't defend Trump as yet but I only have one TV in my living room, which I regret.

Yes there was a moderator. No, neither of the VPs wanted to listen to a woman.
She was being ignored in a crass and abrasive way by both of the candidates and she reacted the only way that they would respond to, by largely not talking over their dick measuring contest.
My view:
In the end, this debate will matter nil to the next two. All Kaine had to do was not fuck up, and he didn't.
This. The pundits are already noting that while Kaine might not have "beaten" Pence the fall out from this debate is the untruths Pence told and how he didn't exactly back up Trump in a convincing manner. A win for Clinton. Job done.

Win or loss, Kaine absolutely dumpstered Pence on substance. He was also really charming in an over-enthusiastic-but-genuine way after that incredibly rough start.
It's a damn shame that people are saying this improved their opinion of Trump-Pence.

My judgement of Kaine tonight:
-First third of it was kind of bad for him due to many unneeded interruptions. Hillary was far more measured and knew when to strike
+Starting in the second half, Kaine's offensive strategy was much more effective when Pence had to answer for things he simply could not answer. Kaine is very lucky that the top of his opponent's ticket is very difficult to defend
+His attempt to bring up Trump's Tax avoidance as an attack on the assertion that he wants to support troops was very clever
-Kaine didn't mention Pence's refusal to pardon that former prisoner despite having a very good opportunity to
-The question about faith at the end was a perfect opportunity to bring Pence's track record on LGBT issues and he didn't strike
Overall, I think Kaine could've done a better job here, but his opponent had to spend so much time having to defend (or deflect) Trump's rhetoric and demeanor that it worked toward Kaine's favor.

Timmy was a mess the first 30 minutes, but came back pretty strong. I like how Pence's excuse for Trump amounts to "He's an unpolished turd." lol..
CBS' "undecided" focus group was unanimously Pence...composure being the reason(not the actual discussion). Every single one also stated this debate did nothing to move the needle for any of their vote despite all agreeing it was a Pence victory.

I had no idea composure mattered more than facts and devestating rebuttals in debates. When Trump interrupted Hillary, it wasn't with quick Ripostes and counters.

If I had (HAD) to pick a winner, I'd go 51% Pence, 49% Kaine.
Both did tremendous jobs for their guy/gal. But Kaine's constant changing the subject (instead of waiting for clear opportunities to attack Trump) and interrupting seemed a little too desperate and anxious. It didn't look great.

I was listening to the debate without video and felt Kaine won. He seemed more engaged whereas Pence had a lot of stuttering and went over time way too much with incoherent ramblings a la Trump. Kaine was absolutely relentless about what Trump has said and that's going to steer so much of the middle away from Trump.
