What happens if you buy a WiiU and you don't have an Internet connection? Are you locked out entirely until you update or does it still let you use disc games?

you can still play disc games. I played on an unconnected unupdated Wii U on Sunday night over at a friends.

I would think you can still play it,with internet connectivity it just gives you an option to bypass the update and play so id assume its the same offline

how so? who is the package with? If it is UPS or FedEx just drive out to the distribution center after 6pm and wait for the truck to return. I've done it a million times.

I tried putting a hold on it, but the driver won't be back until after the distribution center closes.

Is it me, or are the Wii U menu load times not as long as they were before?

They're every bit as long as they were before. What's changed though is how long it takes messages to display in Miiverse, and the amount of time it takes to back out of messages back into the community list. Opening settings, the store etc all still take far too long. Stuff like that will only be changed via system update. They've at least acknowledged it, which gives hope that they'll address it sooner rather than later.

Fooled me too until I saw Tezuka's Mii.

I found Tekuza and followed him. Does anyone know the user names for other Nintendo officials like Reggie, Bill, etc? I think Tezuka had an official sounding one like "NintendoTekuza" and his friend option (obviously) was turned off.

Don't know if this is the right thread so excuse me but I was going to do the whole midnight Wal-Mart launch decided against it and now I'm Wii U-less and kicking myself. So what's my best bet for finding a Wii u?

Check the websites of Target, Best Buy, Gamestop etc each day to see if any stores local to you get restocked. Otherwise pay 50-100 over MSRP from a reseller on Amazon.com

Decided today was the day to pick up my Wii U Deluxe and, lo and behold, the system is dead on arrival with a Blinking Blue Light of Doom. Can't get a replacement at the store because there are no available systems until whenever they get more, so I'm left with waiting or sending to Ninty and waiting. What to do, what to do. My brother picked his up at the same time, since we got ours together, and his works fine. That bastage.

Damn, that is horrible. I had no idea that the Wii U consoles were having that issue. I have not had any issues at all with mine. No freezes or anything.

Ouch :/ At least there should be more shipments soon, if i was in your boat i'd rather switch it for a new one than have it repaired.

They wont be repairing his. They'll give him a new one, and then repair his and give it to someone else as a refurb.

I'm assuming they'll keep it long-term for analysis. In my case, they need to get my Nintendo Land disc out of it or at least give me the downloadable version.

I wish now that my Deluxe had come with Nintendoland pre-installed to the drive. Now whenever I'm not playing it, I have to take it out of the Wii U to get the drive to stop spinning and making noise. I guess the upside is I could sell this copy, but there's 3 mini-games that I enjoy playing a lot, so i doubt I will.

Should Nintendo be making 'sub-communities' in things like Netflix for recommendations?

There's a ton of great drawings on there but it would be cool to have a dedicated community to suggestions.

Also, anyone starting to get the urge to go all digital with the Wii U more than ever? I bought 4 retail games but every time I have to switch out the disks I feel extra lazy. Having an everything remote gets lessened a bit when you still have to swap disks :(

That said, I've been using the TV Remote thing constantly.

Check out Toys"R"Us for a Wii game called FlingSmash. It's 25 bucks and comes with a black Wii Remote with Wiimotion inside. Until the end of today they are having a Buy 1 get 1 for 40% off on all Wii U and Wii games. You could get 2 black Wii remotes for less than 1 with this deal, which is what I did with 4 copies. 85 bucks for 4 Wii Remotes. The only difference between these ones and the new Wii U branded Wii remotes is that the sync button is ont he outside of the new ones as opposed to being on the inside of the battery slot.

Damn, why can't this deal be online? I have no TRU in my neck of the woods.

Yeah, I'm definitely returning it to the store to wait on them. I'm more annoyed that I picked the dead one and that packing all of this shit up after having set it up is a waste of time...there are so many fucking cords and wraps and twist-ties and I honestly have no idea what went where so I'm just throwing that shit together and fitting it into the box so that it resembles the rectangular shape it originally had but it might be a bit misshapen from the things packed in a bit wrong. Don't care. Always a sense of major blueballs with getting DOA-defective shit, but the setup time for this system to having to pack it up is just fucking annoying as all hell. One day, I really hope for every cord in a any given CE device to be gone..a fucking unpleasant memory...and all of these different pieces of equipment to work together wirelessly.

Miiverse is kinda useless as it is. Just an endless stream of posts. I hope it evolves into threaded discussions, with some like you mentioned being Sticky-ed.

I'm still at work and can't check, but search for my Miiverse profile and you can find the ones I'm following. No one I've seen from NoA or among Nintendo execs though.

Not all devs seem to have an official profile though. Matt Bozon (Wayforward) posts on the MSF community, but he doesn't appear to have a checkmark.

Does netflix look washed out for anyone else? Blacks are way off on mine over hdmi (on a tv).

A little yeah. I assumed it was because the HDMI port I have it plugged into is preset to a more vivid display (game mode). Looks fine on the pad. Audio also seems too quiet when running in pad only mode. Hulu's the same way. Which is weird because running Youtube via the browser is plenty loud and so are the games themselves. Sound via headphones is okay but I like the idea of watching something on the stand when I'm doing something else.

I posted this when I noticed it on the Netflix MiiVerse, and someone told me to turn the GamePad slider up. No shit Sherlock. I also tried setting the audio from virtual surround to stereo and didn't hear much if any improvement. Hopefully they'll tweak up the volume in a later update.

There's something up with the app since I use the same settings for all inputs. I think Xbox had a similar problem too with netflix.

It's more of a passive thing right now for everyone to get their doodles/one-off comments off. However, things are well-linked so that when you ask a question and get an answer, you know.

Still, you're right; little 'Stickies' would be nice.

It seems because of this?

It's not "brighter", it's washed out. The Wii U does not support full range RGB, so any video capturing done through a PC will look washed out.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-nintendo-wii-u-review

However, there is some unwelcome news - specifically that the HDMI output is locked to limited-range RGB only, with footage from all games we've captured thus far revealing absolutely no information in the 0-16 or 235-255 areas. Many digital displays - PC monitors in particular - don't operate correctly with limited-range RGB, giving washed out colours principally defined by blacks being more grey-like in nature. This is something Nintendo really needs to address as a matter of urgency - it's the most basic of omissions, something that Sony and Microsoft resolved to everyone's satisfaction many, many years ago.

Anyone from france here? I ordered a french wii u....will it be any different than say....a UK one? I sure as hell hope there will be an English option, if its in french/or the games are then Im cancelling it

Yep, if you ask the question, or respond to one, your activity tab will show when it gets future responses. If you missed someone asking a question though, the chance of ever finding it are incredibly slim right now since someone responding doesn't bump it to the top.

How does it generally work? The US Wii U is English, French, Spanish and Portugese. What do they typically offer in the way of languages in France? Do the French still have a stick up their asses about including anything related to English?

It seems because of this?

Most likely. It's also why Assassins Creed looks so washed out.

I preordered the basic bundle yesterday. No need for any of the incentives of the premium, and plus I greatly prefer white on the Wii U (which is odd as I usually prefer black).

Any other people go with basic? It seems like most of you went for premium.

Unfortunately it's not, and it's a bad idea to just assume that it will work unless you know for sure.

On a similar note--in case not everyone already knew this--the Wii U does not use DTS or Dolby Digital formats for anything. It only sends 5.1 PCM through HDMI. So for those that are still needing to use SPDIF for something such as the Astro Mixamp or Pioneer box (but have a way to send DTS/DD formats through HDMI to it), you're wasting your time. SPDIF does not support the audio that the Wii produces, so you're stuck with crappy Wii mk 2 audio again unless you have a receiver that has HDMI inputs that are able to decode it. You can still Pro Logic it up, but you're still not really getting correct channel seperation and only a slightly more immersive sound field than stereo.

Need a quick answer, does the wii classic controller pro work on wii u games.

I don't see why it wouldn't. Give me a couple of minutes and I'll let you know.
