Because there is always room to optimize your system. Even if it took a whole system rewrite, it could and would be possible to get more out of it. Now, CAN be fixed and WILL be fixed are of course 2 very different matters.

I imagine OS tweaks are priority #1 for the next update which Nintendo better have ready by Christmas otherwise they'll be in deep.

Anyone know if you get club points for downloading and activating things like Hulu plus, Netflix, etc..?

Not currently, at least not if you've done so on Wii/3DS... not sure if not overall. More likely it'll be tied to TVii service when it's out.

*checks* Sweet, I do have a post play Nintendo Land survey at least.

How are you so sure of that?
If you go to the Nintendo support site there's a message saying they'll be updating it in the future. They're aware of these problems. I'll find it and edit this post.

Edit:
"Why Does My System Take So Much Time to Launch an Application?
We are aware that users are experiencing load times when they launch or switch between applications. We are exploring ways to enhance features for consumers’ overall experience."

No, not all of them do. And the fact that you cannot buy the thing separately quickly differentiates it. And the completely different section in gaming sections of stores. And the completely different boxarts. I'm not saying Wii U was a great name, but people are seriously overplaying the confusion card.

I don't know; my girlfriend's 18-year-old daughter, after playing the Wii U with us all night, thought exactly that. She asked me: "How much is a Wii now, and how much is this controller?". After I explained and pointed out the new (barely visible) black box on the rack, she said "Then they should've called it the Wii 2 so I'd know it was a new system".

Can't get much clearer than that.

Isn't Tekken Tag Tournament 2 around 17 GB as well?

EDIT: Oh and fuck it, I'm buying Nano Assault ASAP.
It's 16GB. I had no idea it was that big. I also purchased Assassin's Creed 3 which is 17 GB. So together that's 33GB's of game but luckily I just got purchased a 1TB iomega hdd (pictured below) so I'm not running out of room anytime soon (ever).

1. I had bad frame stuttering on about half of the videos I watched.

2. I only had about a 50/50 chance of any of my subscribed to channels having videos in them... videos showed up fine on search.

3. The youtube browser page is 100x better than the app. If you don't want to deal with scrolling, the mobile page still works better than the app as well.

Yea I was experiencing the same thing with video stuttering. I'll stick with the browser for now.

If I have a super fast connection I would do this but thank goodness Wii U has retail discs.

i honestly expect the OS to continue to suck, nintendo should have based their OS on unix or something, instead we got one built from scratch by a gaming company...it is just not their area of expertise.

The console has been out for only a week... a frickin' week, and people are already casting hopeless cause for the system's every aspect...

Gat damn.

The system does seem to have had a rough start.

That said, this is the first home console launch I've experienced on GAF. I'm wondering if a lot of this stuff is just here.

No console launches without problems, but did people cast suspicions the system would never improve in the slightest within under a month as much as this system? People think, that the OS will always be this slow, lacking in completion, third party games will always look worse and perform worse than their older console counterparts, and never advance graphically in the slightest?

Is this why people have to overanalyze every aspect of the technical nature of the Wii-U to see if it can be come greater than the sum of its parts, or say... nope, you will never advance beyond this.

Vita gets treated way worse than Wii U here.

since this seems like the new OT, when can we expect a new Nintendo Direct? this month (week) or in December?
It's impossible to say, but if I were a betting man, I would say one is almost a sure thing for December. Maybe some talk of new software in the coming months, and a word on updates and fixes.

We've heard no word, we'll likely get one just because the Japanese launch. If not, we'll get a "how to" of TVii when it's out and a real ND at the start of next year to let everyone who bought one over the holidays know what's coming next.

So after 2 months will the account system not be a complete pile of shit?

It's been treated terribly since the day it came out (well, before that, actually). Wii U is getting treated very unfairly too, don't get me wrong. Just not as bad, coming from someone who had Vita when it launched, and who now has Wii U at launch.

In what world is the Wii U being treated unfairly?

I'd say before christmas :)

And honestly, the Wii U mass hysteria with all the threads popping up? Eh, seems like a regular launch here on GAF. I lurked here ever since 2005 and it was crazy during the 360, Wii and PS3 launches. Allthough I did laugh around last Tuesday, when the first third party threads were posted.

They're price matching target so you can go there if you want it in less than 2 toi 3 weeks. I'm kinda tempted.
Thanks for the heads up. While I usually make my game purchases on Amazon, I'm not gonna wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to ship. I'll pick it up sometime this week at Target.

New Console gets announced!

GAF: Hooooolyyy Shit! Let's speculate the hell out of it

More Details surface

Half GAF: Look at dat hot shiiieeet and all them possibilitys!
Other half: ruh-oh!

Launch

Half GAF: Yup, it's all shit!
Other half: what?!

and after that everyone forgets about launch periods till the next console comes.

launches never where really nice. as early adaptor you pay more to get less.
and with the modern day consoles it got evenn worse.
sure thing you have to download a giant patch and after that the shit doesn't even work as advertised.
guess what, that will be standart for comming launches. the more shit the system has included and to do right of the batch the more you going to see fucked up launches.

yupp, the OS is slow as hell and the whole system fucks up waaaay to much at this point, but do people really believe that a system with one gig of ram just for the OS will be that slow and crashy for the rest of it's life span?
that's some crazy talk right there. i for one will be astonished if is will be that bad untill next year.

Early adopters don't always pay more for less.nif prices don't drop for a long time, then we get the time value of having a console earlier, and enjoying at new console smell. Or in the case of the PS3, we get BC included

lol
Many people over here dont seem to forgive the WiiU for not being the new xbox. It happened before the launch and it exploded afterwards.
Because of that for example i actually believed all ports were shit. people start replicating whatever makes them feel warm inside.

Well the fact that my experience with the system was vastly different/better than I was expecting coming from GAF would be an indication. If you go by the general consensus here, you'd think the system would be absolutely terrible, when thats not the case at all.

heh, that wonderfull smell of new hardware. only a new comic can top that.

you're right about the price in the first few month. but the major part of people that bought the ps3, xbox and the wii did that after they where (more or less) tested buy people like us and pay a lower price. and with the whole online nowadays they get a system with more features and a more stable os.

Tempted to get Scribblenauts for $40, but I believe it will go under $30 by next year, so I can wait until then. I still want it though. :P

Haha, going by GAF you would think the Wii U will give you a 10k volts shock once you hook it up. It's amazing really, how much hatred Nintendo gathers here. Are these all 16-18 year olds in their distancing themselves from their childhood phase or what exactly causes every Wii U thread turning into a flame/hate fest? I think if you analyzed all Wii U threads, about 90% of them turn bad I bet.

I feel kinda out of place here. When judging a launch window, I ask myself, "Am I enjoying these games?" and not particularly "How am I liking this OS?"

This time, the answer thus far is, "Why, yes, yes I am, quite much. Thanks for asking!"

All my hopes for a super mario sunshine sequel are pretty much gone since the gamepad doesn't have the same type of triggers as the gamecube.

Probably the one thing I'm really pissed about, since some of the best games on the gamecube had some use of the triggers and it was awesome.

Also makes me pretty sure we'll never see gamecube games on the eshop.

wait, what now? playing games?

hand your GAF-Member Card in, sir!

This is the sad part. Many of the people complaining either don't have the system or are just basing everything on the OS or quick 3rd party ports. It's a system launch, not everything is perfect and we know the games are not representative of what the console can do.

I have had plenty of fun with the system this week and know I will continue to in the future months.

I'm just amazed at how far down the scale of importance this element seems to have been downgraded. When I have the machine on, I see the OS for maaaaybe a few minutes before my hours of gaming begin.

In many regards it's not terrible, but it's also not remotely good. Installs that take 20-30 minutes (infinitely longer if the game is larger than 2 gig), horrible download speeeds from Nintendo servers, a joke of an account system, a slew of ports that are worse than versions on 7 year old consoles, and 2 games from Nintendo that don't really do anything to show off the supposed power of the console. I can't blame anyone that's let down by what's being offered straight out of the box. Outside of Miiverse, there's not much to cheer about. They can't even get demos on the store. If the next Xbox and PS come out this deficient in so many ways, they better get ripped to shreds. People tend to rip Nintendo less simply because we've learned to have incredibly low expectations (hardware-wise). If Microsoft's next release is like this, the noise will be deafening.

On the upside, it's not like things can get worse. I expect a performance patch for the general OS. Opening settings etc shouldnt take this stupidly long to occur. But sooner than that I expect a patch to fix the netcode that's causing the entire Wii U to die when communications with Miiverse go wrong. That should never happen, and I wonder how many people will be getting their Wii U's "fixed" because they think it's the hardware messing up. What will never be fixed (imo) are the slow installs, the lack of achievements, the bad ports, and the inept account system. All reasons why people like me only buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo-developed games. Not an insult, just a fact of life.

Nintendo fans can lament the criticisms being lobbed at the Wii U/Nintendo(part of being a Nintendo fan), but it's all fair imo.

Who said they can't get demos on the store? Rayman was the only demo confirmed for launch day and we know demos are coming.

Plus accounts and achievements can be added or updated. The account system will likely be updated for sign-ins on other consoles in time. Give them some time.

people just love complaining and dissing.

you have like 10-15 seconds loading at the moment for apps and games-startup. that WILL be fixed in the near future. so let's say one or two month max.
i can deal with that.
i can also understand why people complain about that...but how may time have they talked about the ingame loading times of NSMBU or NintendoLand? yeah....

people love to pull that shit.

I know the OS is anything but snappy. But it hasn't been a hindrance at all. During playing games I will only switch between miiverse and the game. And the back and forth is smooth enough for me.

I got the $5 reward zone coupon because best buy had weekend only deal of a free $5 coupon for only this weekend for silver members, $35 for scribblenauts a week after launch is as good as it gets for pricing

Still waiting for a NSBU deal before I get that, not paying $60 for that game

I'm not saying all that can't be added. Sony did it. I'm saying Nintendo won't. As for demos, why weren't all the demos for games like Sonic Racing, Mass Effect 3, etc etc ported to the Wii U? It's not Nintendo's fault, but I think they could have encouraged it. People dropping 350 on a new console are going to need as much free content as you can give them. And it would definitely make dropping full price on games that are now significantly cheaper on other consoles more palatable if we could play demos of them first. I'm not saying that's a negative against Nintendo, but it is a legit negative in regards to this console launch.
