I'm wondering what the Sony and Microsoft conferences are going to be like, what ways they could cockblock Nintendo's presentation.

They'll announce price cuts, some major (moneyhatted) exclusives, etc.

I'm still not trusting either one to keep its word about not showing a new console during their conferences.

If Nintendo is lucky, MS' conference will be all about Kinectimals and non-gaming features.

Boris makes a good point here, and it's really not difficult to understand. If Nintendo's intentions were to court, surprise and go after the "hardcore gamer", then missing Gamescon makes no sense whatsoever.

This is the reason I place so much reverence in the idea of paying attention what what a company does, not says. And missing Gamescon in no way appears like they are doggedly appealing to core gamers wherever they can. It frankly flies in the face of that intention.

If Microsoft and Sony do not unveil their respective next generation consoles, I think they have to work really hard to combat Nintendo's offering. For Microsoft, a new Conker's Bad Fur Day game could draw some attention for example. Sony could induce some hype with Quantic Dream's Kara and The Last Guardian. But in all fairness, I think there is little either of these companies can do with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that could result in people less interested in Wii U (for better or worse). The current generation is starting to become really arbitrary with everything from common production agendas to how people trade with software and even how games are pertained generally. Regardless of better graphics and physics in games, the industry as a whole is becoming more and more static for every day. A fresh wind is needed to be able to drive development further (in hopefully a good direction). Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 won't cut it, though PS Vita has a shot at some nice experiences.

It screams arrogance to ignore the importance that Gamescom has for the European market. Avoiding Gamescom is not a good sign, no matter how people want to twist it. It's either a sign of cheaping out or being afraid of not having a clear competitive advantage in a direct comparison. And honestly, I'd go with the latter.

A Europe wide tour with dedicated Events is a lot more expensive, but it avoids direct comparisons from consumers with devices that are 7 years old by now.

So nothing like "By the way, we have a qHD controller with our upcoming system, and it has Angry Birds preinstalled"? I'm thinking that unlike six years ago, the other companies know that short-circuiting Nintendo's attempt to offer a new, potentially appealing feature might be wiser than ignoring it entirely.

I, too, think they will mainly focus on processing power and sequels (Microsoft will once again heavily feature Kinect, though, and Sony will try to give Vita some more vita), but it'd be interesting if they had some preliminary attack to lessen any oomph N-conf might have.

Going by MS e3 previous history, we'll see CoD, lionhearted game, random music game, halo 4, and the rest are Kinect crap.

Yeah, but the last few years, they haven't been under pressure from a new generation. They finally have a profitable venture after a decade of trying, and they don't want this to be upset by new competition. For once in a long while, there's incentive for them to try harder.

Sony, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be a threat. They really have to do some serious damage control for the Vita. (btw, I tried it out at Target a few days ago -- it wasn't powered, but I must say that I like how the tiny analog sticks feel)

Nintendo Germany focusses on the casual gamer as well as younger people. They love family ads and ads for younger people (Pokemon ads on channels for kids e.g.).

Nintendo Germany also skipped the Games Convention in 2008. That was the high time of Nintendo's casual-only strategy, when games like Disaster were announced one month before launch.

We got our first E3 press event dated:

Add to OP.

Or maybe not. Haha.

I still really think that Killer Freaks will be extremely shitty.

Is his name captain obvious? Seriously, we're going to see RE6 on pretty much every device with a screen. In various forms of course, but it's pretty much a given that RE6 comes to the WiiU, as well as RE5 gold super alpha edition.

Personally, it'll be the PC version of RE6 for me, and maybe the Wii U version if there are any distinct advantages to the Upad.

Does a dev kit really need twice the amount of RAM then a retail unit?

It seems like a lot of RAM for debugging, we are talking Gigs here, why do you need gigs extra to debug??? The debug tools do not need that much overhead anymore.

Seriously,

I come back to the thread and there are already 15 new pages :/
Yes I know, it's pathetic. We should be at 30 so I think you should give us a bone :P

1.5 has always been my belief.
It's gonna be 2......it's just gotta.

Me neither. I guarantee if MS or Sony, at the last minute said they were going to announce something, 99% of the gaming media would drop Nintendo like a stone and their sites would be all "the real next-gen is coming!"

Agreed. Wii U would hit a few million units pretty early on and for the sake of a couple of weeks Dev time for a couple of guys, why not capitalise on it?

Dev kits run a lot more in the background than the retail units do.

The easiest way to do this, time-wise, would be to make it so that the pause or inventory screen is on the DRC, and that's it (and the game acts as normal if running only on the DRC). I think this wouldn't require massive resources to do at all.

(okay, the easiest way would really be to show the RE6 logo or a blank screen on the DRC, but I mean the easiest way without seeming totally cheap)

Sunshine had water as a big part of the game and the Galaxies had gravity/planetoids, what should WiiU 3D Mario have?

Endless, open-world fields and cities. Not actually a good idea for the type of Mario game that is popular, but I'm sure there's a lot of instinct in that direction among devs (a la Mario 64 and Sunshine).

Big expansive worlds.

I'd rather they go back to tight level design. Galaxy was a step in the right direction except for levels like the Honeybee ones.

I loved Mario 64, but it was a product of its time, and we don't need to revisit that level design again. Platforming challenges, being funneled forward, occasional secrets along the way, that makes a Mario game.

Mario 64 was a bold experiment in 3D game design that worked out astoundingly and set the pace for almost all third-person 3D games from then on. Galaxy was a better Mario game.

I know it's the modern way to have gaming done in 5 min chunks but I prefer a much more open world environment.
Give me a Mario in a huge open world with tons of puzzles Skyrim style and I'll probably never need to play another game ever again.

Man, if only Nintendo would have a series with a huge open world and puzzles.

Welp, better turn Mario in to that series.

I'm not even on the train. ;-;

And I meant to edit that into my last post, but it happens.

Oh well. One step closer to my goal of 10,000 posts in this thread. I'm totally going to get it!

The number of double and even triple post you'd need to do in order to reach 10,000 will get you banned before you can do it.

I'm listening to IGN's podcast while i'm typing this...
Jesus Christ... it's like listening to Beavis and Butthead, except not humorous. pfffff.

It needs levels like Beach Bowl Galaxy/Gold Leaf Galaxy but HUGE.

I'd rather they used the 3D series for open world, Mario 64-style design, and keep a 2D series alongside for the tight platforming action.
