Has a men's player ever won a grand slam title only to lose in the first round of the very next grand slam? (Besides Nadal right now)

I'm beginning to think the people who said Nadal should just show up for the French Open every year were right.

I'm sure it happened lots in the 80's and 90's when there was clay court specialists and the Wimbledon grass was still fast.

I'm watching the replay right now of the Nadal match. DAMN, what a loss for him.

What's fantastic for Federer fans is that he won't play Nadal in the quarters anymore. So, that makes the road to the Finals that much easier for Nadal. But I guess is we were to learn anything from this match, it is to never assume a win is in the bags.

Can't say I'm that surprised Nadal lost. Like I already said in the RG thread (as crazy as that may sound after he won that tournament) ever since he returned he's been back to his bad old habits of grinding way too much instead of trying to win the point earlier in the rally (aka go to the fucking net), the same exact reason he had troubles early in his career on faster courts (to his advantage and other allround players even grass isn't that fast anymore which is a goddamn shame) and the reason why he's hurt so much. He has to work way too hard to win points. Djokovic made the same mistake last year, but he seems to be a bit more agressive again (still not enough imho)

the consistency of the top players (mostly due to homogenisation of the different surfaces) is a very new thing.

i can watch this tournament very relaxed now since federer won't lose to nadal and any of the remaining players winning is fine by me.

Federers chance at winning just went from "no way in hell" to "lol no".

Also, my search randomly brought this up. LOL.

lol I am watching a recording of ESPN's coverage and I got to the part where John Mcenroe says that he is leaning towards Nadal being the greatest player of all time. I know that he is a Nadal fanboy, so I wonder how he reacted to the loss.

I just found this topic. I didn't see a single live match from Roland Garros due to work for my study. Now at least this Thursday/Friday I can finally see some matches. And now I read that Nadal already lost in the first round. That is like terrific news. I really don't like Nadal that much besides on clay. He is so compulsive with his almost autitistic like structures of how the bottles should be standing and such. Its like he has an OCD or something.
I hope that Djokovic, Del Potro, Federer or Murray wint this tournament in that order. So Nadal losing, I love it.

On a different note, if Federer doesn't at least reach the final, Ferrer will probably overtake him as the no.3 seed. If Federer gets pushed out of the top.4 seeds, that's probably game over these days - I simply don't believe he can go through all 3 of Nadal, Djokovic, Murray given it's something he's never done before. This Wimbledon or alternatively this U.S. Open might be his last serious hurrah.

I swear, many guys in Tennis can hit absurd shots but none can make it as classy looking as Federer.

Especially him using just one hand. He never uses both hands which obviously shows that he got a great technique. Theres a young player who plays exactly like Federer. He said that he's his role model. I am seeing a little Federer in him. He plays exactly like him! One hand for forehand and backhand strikes. This is beautiful!

Yeaaaahhh!! First set to Robo. Holding on to hope that Laura's serve holds up.

Shame that it has to be at the expense of Best Maria.

Incredible return game by Robo. She's dominating Maria, who just can't express her game at all.

Even worse, we get Larcher DeBrito vs. Sharapova in the 2nd round.

hahaha I bet many people will be shocked cause even though she's very talented she hasn't really made a name for herself so far. Better get those earplugs ready*

*just kidding. I honestly have no idea what the issue is as long as it doesn't bother the other players.
