For anyone just jumping into WP (or anyone who hasn't tried it yet), I really can't recommend the Wikipedia app by Rudy Huyn enough. It looks great, is fast, has great support, can be customized, has tons of nice features and makes up for some gripes with the OS like screen orientation lock or problems with getting to the home of the app when you pin search.

If only all other apps showed this attention to detail.

So what's happening with Draw Something for WP7? They released a buggy version of it, pulled it, and I don't remember hearing much after.

A new paid version with no ads is now out along with Words With Friends. $3 IIRC, for 7.x and 8.

As for app suggestions, I would have no real suggestions, seeing as I rely on internal apps most, but I'd have to give props to the WPCentral app and Rowi. Paid for them both, and I like them both.

I also like Cut the Rope and how smooth it is - it ran at 60 FPS for some reason!

I just searched for both Words With Friends and Draw Something and got no results. I also had problems finding Sonic 4: Episode 2 and that apparently came out a while ago. The fuck? For reference I live in Canada and have a Lumia 610.

Marketplace propagation takes a while.

If after a few days it doesn't show up, well... incompatibility?

It's weird, I downloaded Draw Something last week, but now I can't find it anymore. Maybe they pulled it.

So my Microsoft account is linked to a Hotmail account? I used to have a Hotmail account way back when. If I go to Hotmail, can I log in with my MS account? What confuses me is my MS account is a @gmail account. Can someone clear this up?

You can use that Hotmail account to link to your phone, but you need to perform a factory reset to do so. Your Microsoft account is a bit confusing, but I bet that it probably will be considered invalid. I'm not sure, though.

How do I enable dynamic backgrounds?

I went under settings and set my background to bing, but it hasn't changed since yesterday.

The Bing background didn't update for me either, but when I tried Facebook and switched back to Bing the background updated to today's image.

The only frustration I'm having with WP8 is that I can't seem to sign into Messenger on the phone. And as a result the Rooms chat feature just doesn't work.

Just think of your Microsoft account as some text that you use to log in. It doesn't necessarily interact with the backing email account (mine is a yahoo), it just happens to be in the form of an email address. My yahoo account and Microsoft account have completely different passwords even though the account name (email address) is the same.

Blast from the past:

Making of the design of the Lumia 800.

(It just showed up on Engadget, where it was posted a year ago)

Such a pretty little thing, still. Whatever happens, I don't think I can get myself to give it away.

Edit: Haha, this video is great. They all talk like actors who have been fed their lines. So natural!

Do games with the green Xbox branding on top have achievements?

I wanna know how they expect us to believe that all colors and body design was inspired by windows phone when N9 was announced earlier with same exact design.

Big bro now has the 920. Meanwhile I wait patiently in awe of the damn thing. Can't wait for him to complain about the Windows Phone 8 app.

What are the chances of us being able to sync via Xbox Music instead?

Yeah, the video is hilarious marketing stuff.

Also, one week later:

One friend (Apple fan to the bone, like, obsessed with it), is getting his 920 monday.
Another friend, not as tech obsessed, is getting an 820.
A third one is still on the brink, but in the end I think he'll cave.

I feel like a shill now, but I also feel like I'd totally deserve a free 920 for pushing those guys over the edge.

I look forward to their public complaints

has calmed down a bit.
Since WP8 has drag-n-drop, why still use a sync client?

Podcast management, playlist management, etc. Basically, I rather manage my collection and subscriptions on my PC and refresh every night with a sync. I'm on my pc in the evenings anyway, its just better for my work and life flow.

I'm walking around with my phone all the time, in and out of WiFi range, I really don't want to manage downloads for podcasts it new music through my phone. Also, my wife has a Lumia and I only have to download an album once and sync to both phones wirelessly. One of the reasons I left android was lack of a competent sync client like iTunes or Zune, and now MS is punishing me with a crappy sync client rather than just reskinning Zune.

I remember a vid where the Lumia/N9 was assemblied (?) and "driven" around from factory to store, or something like that. It didn't have the cheap PR talk if I recall correctly, but it did have some nice lumia porn in it.

Anyone care to find it?

I see now. It was throwing me off how it was saying my calendar events were stored to hotmail.

so do we have an idea who's responsible for bringing WP7 apps up to compatibility. If its the developers I don't have a lot of confidence.

Yeah, it is the developers (if there is an actual incompatibility). If you're asking because of Spotify

Microsoft representatives said late Friday that new, optimized Windows 8 apps will begin rolling out soon. “The Windows Phone 8 platform was designed to run existing 7x apps, but some may require a degree of optimization given the new hardware and software capabilities,” a company spokeswoman said in a statement. “We are working with popular developers like Spotify and encouraging all developers to test their apps with our new SDK to help ensure that apps and games run great and take full advantage of new features. We expect the catalog of existing app titles on new devices to grow steadily over the coming weeks and months, and a Spotify client for Windows Phone 8 is in development and will be available in Q1 2013.”

Perhaps they will do a Windows 8 app at the same time.

Instead of taking the bottom left most button, it is on the left side of a whole new row at the bottom

So, ATT is fucking disorganized as fuck. I'm awake 'til 4 AM last night (on phone unrelated business--no, I was not waiting for a shipping e-mail) and get nothing--the order is still listed as processing.

At 9:20 AM this morning, I get an e-mail from ATT, saying the order has shipped. In fact, they tried to deliver it to my work address at 7:30 AM (!) and of course, no one was there. Now I don't have the option to reschedule delivery or have them hold it as a FedEx location.

Fucking ATT. What kind of douchebags send you the first tracking number notice, two hours after they attempted delivery?

LUCKILY
I gave FedEx a call, gave them the shipping number, and they said it will be at a local FedEx office and I can pick it up from 4-5 PM.

FUCK YES

So, my order was a no-commitment "upgrade", meaning I spent $450. I don't recall ever selecting or being asked to change my plan, which is grandfathered unlimited (4G/LTE). I can just switch out the SIM card from my Lumia 900 to the 920, right?

I've also been waiting for this upgrade to change my Windows Live ID, since changing it requires a refresh/wipe of your phone anyway. This seems like the perfect time to do it.

So I'm going to post some photos taken with my 900 today because I'm bored.

Seems like Sports mode can freeze moving water.

I kinda like how well-exposed and detailed this picture is, to be honest. I didn't expect it to be this good, though.

This might be my wallpaper.

Nice, those look better than expected...wonder if they updated the firmware in shipped models.

Ordered two Lumia 920s online, cyan for me and a red one for the wife. I bought a Surface and upgraded to Windows 8 earlier in the week, so when the phones arrive the trinity will be complete.

Twice, in fact. A lot of issues are caused by the image processing software being not up to snuff - some of the improvements include ISO 100 being actually usable now.

That said, the camera works very well in good lightning, but during low-light situations, you are going to need the flash and be tolerant of colour noise. Night mode helps a lot, too.

Don't rely on Auto during nighttime without flash.

I wish I could share this story, but alas, colour is important to both of us. Which makes me realise... all of this is just simply fashion.

Just a random question but how do I clear the clipboard on WP7? I keep accidentally hitting the paste icon when I type w when I'm responding to conversations.

How do you and your wife feel about adult adoption?

I don't think I can afford a third mouth to feed because of the amount of money I spent on all of this damn technology.

I tried to go into a store and buy the devices last night but they only had black. It's very important that I get my phone in cyan so that it matches the touch cover I got for my Surface. So yes, you are absolutely correct.

I've noticed that flash with auto looks more natural than flash with night mode. Seems like night mode is more for when you can't use flash.
I post a pic in the Lumia 920 thread. It's god tier phone camera when it comes to low light.

This is at 4am, with just few sidewalk light and using no flash.

Also as music player the 920 best all my other smartphone especially with Nokia equalizer and Dolby headphone.

Went into a Rogers store and held both the 8X and 920 in my hand, the dummy phones at least. 8X feels so slick in your hand while I felt the 920 was a tad too big and heavy.

It's down to the HTC 8X and Nexus 4 for me now. Still not counting out the 920 though. I want to see it in action first.

The more I use it the more the Windows Phone Sync app pisses me off. I also hate Xbox Music. I'm extremely anal when it comes to my music organization. I don't even put music on my phone unless I have album art. Since neither app has the ability to edit mp3 tag's they're useless to me.

Why don't you try using Windows Media Player to sync music? It recognizes the 920.

The playlist, or lack thereof management is going to kill me for a while till they flesh the app out a bit. So so stupid they actually managed to take a giant step back in user experience with the syncing software.

Another note, finally have an expected delivery date, November 13th, this Tuesday. I haven't been this frustrated by ordering online since the early 2000s. I ordered midnight on the 7th, and it took them three days to communicate a tracking number or at the very least an expected delivery date. Don't think I'll be ordering online next time if I can help it, and if rumors are true I could have possibly went to a store yesterday and picked up a Cyan 920. Bah! ALL HAIL MY TUESDAY OVERLORD.

What's everyone's battery saving tips? Limit live tiles? Is something like a group of friends tile constantly pulling data?

I don't think there are many options that significantly save battery. I don't think live tiles are a huge factor (they don't update themselves that often). You can disable push email and instead have it synchronize emails in regular intervalls, but I don't think that's a big issue either. I think the biggest factors for power are the screen and mobile internet. Choosing a lower brightness instead of automatic brightness might help and so should limiting internet speed. Personally, I rarely change these settings, but in some cases when I know I need long battery life (for taking lots of photos) I set the internet speed to 2G (still fast enough for checking twitter, but not much more).
In some situations you could manually activate battery saver mode (just for one day).

I've 'sold' a Lumia 920 to my mother who is upgrading from WP7 and today I've 'sold' an HTC 8X to someone else. At first I recommended the Nexus 4 to him (since he's buying off-contract), but he read a review that criticized its battery life (on golem.de) and he would prefer an HTC device. Then I saw this deal today: http://wmpoweruser.com/good-price-blue-htc-8x-for-437e-in-germany/. 437 Euros for the 8X was a good enough deal for him to bite.
