Nope, it is not the sci-fi, neither the fact it is a shooter. It is a damn fine game, and thats about it. In the 3 years I have been in my university, I have seen countless Halo/Halo 2 tournaments, from the crappiest tournament organized in a basement to the biggest tournament organized by MTVU . What I noticed is that the majority of people do not give a rats ass about the story, the music, or all the "geek" stuff. They just love the multiplayer. To make it clear, the 4 members of the team who won the MTVU tournament in 2005 did not even know who the Arbiter was. Heck, only 2 of them had finished the campaign, and apparently it was just because of the coop. There is something going on with the gameplay of Halo that other games lack. I do not know what it really is, but it has the power to attract hardcore and casuals alike.

ok, then a combination of everything :D

And people will say that Halo will vastly outsell Metroid because it is a better game. Nintendo, you can learn a damn thing from this. Advertising works.

It's a shooter multi thing. Consoles are jsut catching up to PC FPS now that they successfully implemented the control scheme. FPS were huge in the PC realm 4-5 years ago.

And no, shooters on the console wasn't confined to "geeks" and "nerds".

**looks at Halo:CE sales**
**looks at Metroid Prime sales**

Hmmm.....I think it's pretty safe to assume the franchise soundly proved itself waaaay before all this hype. I mean fuck, Metroid. It already had a fanbase to appeal to and it still got the shit beat out of it saleswise by the newcomer.

3 million isn't all that bad.

"It's a wonderful restaurant!"

The scary thing is that just the other day, my girlfriend and I were talking about the Halo 3 at 7-11 story. We started going back and forth on how AWESOME it would be if they did Halo promotions at certain places and I swear to god.. I said Burger King.

MICROSOFT: STEAL THIS IDEA FOR A COMMERCIAL. PLEASE-

Master Chief: I need a Whopper ..
Johnson: Right this way ...
[Queue shot of Chief and Johnson rolling up to BK in a Warthog. The King does a polite jig and waves the duo in]

I heard this rumor that not all games appeal to everyone. Not sure if it's true, though.

I heard that rumor too. But it's totally unconfirmed as of now. I'll post once the final info is in.

:)

That wasn't my point at all.

And, no. It's not, but 7 million is alot better. But oh, wait. People just bought that many copies of Halo because of all the hype, nevermind that it was a new franchise and barely had any besides the kind generated by people. Seriously.

I'd guess those 4 million pre-orders were retail pre-orders. I can't see Halo 3 besting 2 in first day sales, but I was wrong predicting Halo sales last time.

Really, I think Halo is what the Goldeneye crowd moved on to.
For me, Halo was the next great single-player FPS evolution after Half-Life. You missed that if you didn’t play it on Xbox. It was fuckin’ awesome.

Hey I just got a "King Sized" meal from Burger King, I have no idea why people are saying this isn't healthy?

I really... really don't want to derail this thread, so I'm just going to say "wow" and go back to playing the Stranglehold demo.

Yeah it's a shame that the hole is actually a rectangle and won't really fit on any cats. Was really looking forward to the photos with cats wearing the helmets. Dammit.

I don't care how big of a fan of a specific game you are, if you are genuinely psyched over game marketing of the type and micro-macro scale of your typical blockbuster movie release, then there is something wrong with you.

I work in marketing, this is exciting stuff for me.

Too hyperbolic. What I meant what that I hadn't played a single player/co-op FPS with anywhere near the scope and awesomeness of Halo, since Half-Life.

*sigh*

Think outside the box a little. A tad bit of dremel work would fix that right up.

LAWL @ anyone gouging a $130 piece of plastic to take cat photos.

That I can accept, assuming you're comparing storylines.

preorders mean nothing cause no one i know, including myself, has not preordered. and we're all big Halo fans.

as for that big Burger King Halo 3 cup, I want that!

I tried that and my cat doesn't seem to like it.

Of course, but it brought a fuckton more people with it.

Now, I know Wikipedia isn't the best source, but according to it, Goldeneye sold over 8 million. That's more than Halo and comparable to Halo 2.

Depends on the retailer. Some are still taking pre-orders.

Random aside, while looking that up I noticed they have the Halo 3 360 dated for September 16th.

Ahh cool. I know in Australia and from what Ive heard Europe too, retailers have stopped taking Legendary pre-orders. But you can always find a store I guess. I left it to late myself and after emailing about 5 online stores with no luck I checked out Harvey Norman. They are an electrical department store in Aus and they still had tons left. Dont think Ill be getitng it at midnight though :( Ill probably pick up a standard issue copy from EB then take it back the next day for full refund.

Was going to say that, but you'd have to be crazy to ruin a ~$60 helmet like that.

DO IT

I'm all for mass-market hyping, but I'm not sure putting Halo on french fry boxes and orange sodas is the best way to go to go. It just seems to cheapen the brand a bit too much.

One thing that Sony (used to) understand and do very well is brand marketing, and building cachet around their brands. You would never have seen a GT3 or even a Killzone promotion at Burger King.

I think Microsoft still doesn't really understand consumer marketing.

I think MS is doing a fantastic job with the Halo marketing. Everyone knew when Halo 2 was dropping. That's how to make a public aware.

pfff They were all over the place in the food stands in Six Flags. It was so lame, yet nobody noticed. That was truly cheapening the brand.

Whatever they're doing with marketing, it's working. Halo 2 day-one sales spoke for itself, and Halo 3 is trying to broaden out to a wider audience. I am concerned that Halo 3 is being pimped out a bit too much, but that has more to do with the merchandising than the promotions. This is the kind of stuff that will help make the launch even larger - which is the goal, of course.

really? what did they do, spend millions and millions on placing the sony playstation name and logo all over the place?

its pretty much the same thing MS is doing.

If your sole objective is to get the word out about the launch, then putting it on Slurpee cups is great, sure.

If you're trying to be smart about building a brand that will still be perceived as cool 10 years from now, I'm not so sure it's such a great approach.

Mario gets put on these things as well. There have been sports promotions, movie promotions, all of that on a value meal cup. I can't see this as a bad thing at all.

No brand has hurt his image for being in fast food. Actually it is quite the opposite.

There is no doubt in my mind.

I swear Gahiggidy did it before Drinky. Gahiggidy would always be popping in threads saying shit like "I believe this news" or "This I believe" until finally it was shortened to "believe". I think that Drinky post was more or less making fun of that....among other things.

All which makes "Believe" plastered on Halo merchandise even more hilarious.
QFT

so awesome :lol :lol

I'm really excited to see Microsoft's full marketing blitz in action. I hope they can beat the Gears "Mad World" commercial, both in terms of quality and distribution. I swear I saw that commercial four times an hour on ESPN and ESPN2.
