WSJ: Here Comes 'Halo 3' -With a Side Order of Fries, 1 million pre-orders confirmed

A lack of physcial education, a sedentary lifestyle, and poor eating habits are what pediatricians and others medical groups state are the leading causes of childhood obesity. As I posted earlier, young children associate "better" with branding even if what they deem as better is actually the same. Education and making children and adults aware of the risks associated with fast food consumption is what practitioners and researchers are tasked with doing with public funded research projects and so yes, that is my interest in this.

Microsoft's decision to use fast food as a vehicle for marketing Halo 3 is the topic of this thread. Movies have been subjected to the same criticism I am presenting. People come into to see a physician for injuries and illnesses resulting from behavior far dumber than eating fast food. So, yes, I think education at any level can only be helpful. And if game companies want to market their games to kids using fast food, then they need to be prepared for the criticisms.

How man times does this have to be said? You fuckers are exactly what's going wrong with this country. Always want to butt in on other people's kids. Each parent has a right to feed and protect their children, and if they are maltreated there are laws in place for that. But beyond that, the only thing you can do is offer a suggestion. So you should worry about your OWN children if you have any. And if you don't, have you some, and then you can worry about your perfectly fit little kids' million of OTHER problems that I'm sure they will have since I have never met a perfect child.

First I can't smoke in NEW YORK, or get a smokers room at the beach. Next thing I know you tight-asses will pass some law that makes a good juicy burger illegal or that will require getting carded.

PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Oh, and for the record: I have seen more FAT DOCTORS, AND DENTISTS WITH BAD TEETH in this country than ANY OTHER. Why don't you start regulating your OWN first, and then MAYBE some of you might just turn out to be role models and the kids will WANT to be like you ON THEIR OWN. NOT FORCED. Because when you FORCE THEM THEY WILL DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE. Because that's how kids do. But your diplomas won't teach you that.

So I can expect to see this same screed in Nintendo threads, which have routinely used sugary cereals and candies to sell their product? One presumes you'll reconvene your lecture once the Indy 4 BK meal releases?

Hmmm, I wonder if this works...

Don't be a dick, jimbo.

Yep, I guess it does.

I have to say, I liked the complete insanity, glue-snorting de-rail of the last Halo 3 thread a lot more than this disturbing, obese warnings, anti-obese-warnings meltdown derail.

Somebody work with this.

There is new stuffz in the Bungie Store.

Posters for the first two images in the branding campaign (where is the third? is that still coming?), and a 16-month wall calendar. No new images, though. Might have to snag the cover art poster.

That looks good.

Quick question: Does the Art of Halo book have different stuff from what's at the end of the graphic novel? Because I have the GN, and was thinking of picking up the Art Book.

Also, I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but the Gamepro says the Grunts are hard to fight, will dual wield plasmas pistols, and have berserker ability.

The Halo campaign is just the most recent to join the large club of companies using sugar, caffeine, and fat to market their product. As I stated a couple of times already, I am not targeting Microsoft and singling them out as the only offender.

And since you bring up Nintendo, they are currently doing quite well with the Wii partially because gamers and their families want to get off the couch and play a game together. Perhaps McDonald's will use Wii Fit in a cross promotion using apple slices and milk as an alternative to fries in their happy meals.

I am in no way advocating the removal of any freedoms. I like a good cheeseburger every now and again. Physicians struggle with many ailments just like everyone else. Sometimes those ailments are key motivators in driving physicians towards work that helps prevent others from being afflicted with those same ailments. Obviously, some of you feel threatened by me just mentioning that the targeting of kids with fast food marketing is contributing to childhood obesity. As a parent, I battle everyday with the seductions of Captain Crunch, Keebler Elves, and Chucky Cheese to name a few. As I stated earlier, junk food is fine as a treat. If someone is misinformed, and thinks feeding kids fast food 3-4 times a week is healthy, then I will reference you to the documentary "Super Size Me" so you can see and hear about what consuming it in high quantities will do to you.

But it is everyone's problem. Lower sperm count, countless associated health risks that affect our tax dollars and an ever-increasing sympathy for what is "normal" (see the average waiste line today, as compared with that of the 1950's). But this isn't Microsoft's problem. They are similar positioning themselves in a way that gives them market leverage. We encourage people to stuff their faces with high calories drinks and foods. Look at the size of that drink for example- it most likely gives a human enough calories to last an entire day.

Then I ask again, why aren't you in other threads railing about this. Why pick out the Bungie thread? Have you opened this can of platitudes anywhere else but this thread? Is there some special reason you felt this was the thread in which you'd bare your dietary and medical soul?

Look, I don't actually disagree with you about the perniciousness of fast food (although the idea that the problem is education is laughable, unless education includes indoctrination), just that it has dick all to do with this thread, and that you've chosen MS and Bungie to target rather than a dozen other threads with games that have long historical attachments to fast food and candy companies.

You're talking about how well Nintendo is doing with the Wii while ignoring the fact that Nintendo routinely licenses their images to candy companies which are outputting pure sugar into the mouths of our poorly educated and impressionable children.

So, I ask for like the third time, why this thread and not those?

That's why perhaps we should teach our kids self-restrain, not come to stupid conclusion like Halo on Burger King boxes. Because if it's not weight, it will be something completely different. And REGULATING every LITTLE thing that might be related to a problem is stripping what makes this country FREE.

I'd love to know the percentage of people OUTSIDE this country that actually die of old age.

The Edge article mentioned the Grunts can go nuts and charge you with two plasma grenades primed. Should make for some fun encounters.

Also, DenogginizerOS: I want you to know that yes, I do want fries with that, because fries are delicious. But you should know that I plan to consume them responsibly.

I was gonna say....halo 3 is gonna be sweet but will it have 100 g of sugar lulz

Luke Smith working on the marketing?

Or have they always been saying :"Believe" in they're ads?

I apologize. I neglected to see the importance of yet another thread on GAF about discussing the greatness of Halo3. I suggest we change the title:

"Halo 3 is the awesome. Here is another thread started with a story not directly related to how the game plays so all the Halo fans can come in and talk about how great it will be."

A thread title with a reference to fries and the marketing of a video game. I ask, "Why not this thread?" What is the intent of this thread oif not to discuss Halo 3's marketing? We have plenty of threads talking about Halo 3's gameplay. Does every thread about Halo 3 have to be about people coming in and saying, "Day One Purchase", "Can't Wait", "Stinkles, can I make sweet love with you while Luke videotapes"?

Ah, always go the smartass route when you don't have a real answer. Well played, sir. Might I suggest you actually create your own thread for discussing this issue? I'd be glad to join you in OT for that.

Bingo, it's about the marketing push for Halo, not about obesity in America, at least not until you brought your derail gun to town. You clearly have a problem with people talking about Halo 3, entered a Halo 3 thread and derailed it. What difference do you see between this and trolling, exactly? When asked why you haven't done similarly in threads about other games which routinely use candy and fast food to sell, you don't seem to have an answer that isn't complete smart-assery.

I can't imagine why someone would question your motives.

How about you tell me what this thread is supposed to be about. It is a thread started with a story about marketing Halo 3 with Burger King, Pepsi, and Pontiac products. It discusses how Halo 3 will be marketed in a similar way to blockbuster movies. It also mentions that an M-Rated game will have kids meals speciafically targeted towards kids. Tell me where my discussing how childhood obesity and the marketing of fast food to kids contributes to it doesn't fit in to the discussion.

Ok, let's do some calculations to see if Halo 3 will set a new opening day revenue record for media of any form, again.

I think the current record is still Halo 2 with $125 million in revenue the first day out.

I believe that Halo 3 will sell in proportions close to this on opening day:

Regular: $60 - 1/2 of the sales
Limited: $70 - 1/3 of the sales
Legendary: $130 - 1/6 of the sales

Average price: $75

Halo3 currently has 1 million preorders sooner than Halo 2 had. If we are pessimistic and think that Halo 3 will sell only as many copies as Halo 2 did the first day (2.38 million units), than the first day revenue would equal:

2.38 million x $75 = $178.5 million

That would shatter the previous record of $125 million. In fact, looking at it now, I don't see anyway Halo 3 DOESN'T break Halo 2's record the first day.
