Xbox has announced a multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer new silicon chips for the next-generation of Xbox consoles

Guess the rog handheld is the beta test for the multiple stores ui ms is planning. If its really full back compat with windows I may finally have The Darkness 1 and Lost Odyssey back in my library.

It could be more than one kind of device under the umbrella, but "and fully compatible with your existing Xbox game library" suggests it will retain all current functionality as well.

Well I guess we will have to wait and see. As usual the messaging here is conflicting.

And just yesterday I said I wasn't going to talk about future stuff anymore

What a time to go dark eh?

Any chance you know why Xbox Design Lab has been down for 6 MONTHS to update their "payment" platform? This is such bullshit.

Xbox can't leave bespoke hardware behind. Gamepass doesn't work at scale without consoles.

Console gamers have been conditioned to pay monthly to use Internet with their games. They are already conditioned for gamepass. You can charge them more. They are younger than PC gamers and less likely to cancel month to month. They are a perfect captive audience. They also make up the vast majority of gamepass.

If you make the next real device a PC then you are resetting that programming and scattering your audience. Instead they need a real Xbox console to do the job.

Also Windows isn't actually ready for gaming. Slapping Windows on a bespoke console like XSX or PS5 would cause major performance issues. MS is aware of Window's deficiencies and working to resolve them. Maybe people who don't keep up with this stuff thinks this sounds crazy. You sure about that?

So this is the only move.
If this were Xbox One gen I would agree, but Xbox seems to be going out of their way at this point to abandon the Series hardware platform. I'm just not sure the traditional console model is still on their roadmap.

Maybe they think they can make an Xbox Windows app so user friendly that the traditional console crowd won't notice the difference?

Many hopes have been broken and shattered today...
There will be a new XBOX and backwards compatibility too... next stop: "this isn't a console" 🤷🙃

Sorry, but I can only respond with LOL good sir...

The cope and "never surrender " mentality displayed by some of you is just something else...

Holy shit they actually have some information on what direction they going !? I'm befuddled !

Xbox has always been built like a limited PC though. I think it's great for Microsoft to actually leverage their PC roots for their next console.
We don't even know if that's what they are doing though. In fact HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 has said before they are releasing a traditional console. So they are probably doing that and then having Asus make some sort of desktop rog ally like device with their new OS on it. They are still pushing play anywhere so this makes the most sense because if it was all PC then Play anywhere wouldn't matter once they release the new xbox.

You would have thought they would learn to listen to what they are actually being told after "only 4 games", but alas.
Where's your screenshots of the many posters insisting there would be no more Xbox hardware? I guess that wasn't a priority for some reason? :pie_thinking:

Don't sweat it big PC gamer. This is only going to improve your ecosystem, right?

Well that depends.

All out war between Windows and Linux/SteamOS wouldn't end up being for the faint of heart.

There's no coincidence that since the fall of GFWL the rise in PC gaming has been during a period when Microsoft have been largely hands-off with it.

Xbox is making a PC with the prime directive of playing ports of console games that use AMD graphics

Turns out, this PC uses an AMD graphics card

This is shocking news

Don't give me more ammo.

I'll be the first to remind you if this doesn't end up being what you seem to think it is.

Things have changed greatly since then. Especially when it comes to legality of closed store fronts and side loading, etc. This should be a boost for Steam as well. Linux, yeah, MS is 100% going to war with Linux.

Well if Microsoft are going to war with Linux then that means they are also going to war with Steam considering Valves current interests and tragectory.

Well the good news is that now you'll have more options. You can still game on Linux if you want to. It's going to be up to Steam how much they want to invest in Linux.

On the other hand, if it is what I think it is then you will quietly forget about this conversation.

The partnership is "to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices including our next generation xbox".

That doesn't sound like they're just gonna do xbox branded PC's, but that's just me. 🙏

Nothing they are currently doing increases my options. If I want to access my Steam library then I can do so via Windows, SteamOS or Geforce Now, and nothing they are doing here changes that.

This has bigger implications for the Xbox console ecosystem and those still tied to it than it does anyone who primarily games on PC. Ultimately Xbox users are going to be beholden to whatever direction Xbox and Microsoft decide to take this in.

On the other hand, if it is what I think it is then you will quietly forget about this conversation.

Don't you worry, I'll gladly say if I get something wrong. It's just unfortunate that Xbox have rarely made me do so over the last decade.

But I was told Xbox was leaving the hardware business completely because an internal handheld that was never officially announced was sidelined.
Probably you are the only one left who can still predict the MS strategy about the xbox brand. They change idea practically every week.

I've said it before and I'll say it again : I absolutely have no problem with Xbox, they had some good consoles/hardware (with the exception of the Xone and the X360 RROD fiasco), some pretty good and memorable franchises throughout the years AND some software/hardware initiatives like BC, Quick resume, an HDD as standard during the OG Xbox era etc etc but, I could never stand the toxic, PR-driven, unhinged behavior and mentality of its fanbase, that, and the PR fiasco of the XSX/XSS era of over promising and under delivering which made me jump ship in late 2022 since I was done with their BS promises.

You'd think that the same fanbase, after literally getting thrown under the proverbial bus by the same company (going full 3rd party/completely devaluating their 500€ purchase) would actually make them think harder /have 2nd thoughts but alas...it's just another "different day, same shit" with them, it's like those WW2 JPN soldiers that kept on fighting since they didn't know the war had already ended, it's a really strange phenomenon man, the constant "now you'll see !", jabs and "Sonytoo® and Nintendotoo®" not only have they got long in the tooth but actually irritating at this point.

Obviously, it goes both ways with the likes of James Sawyer but, yeah 😉

There were zero doubts on my end but I had an unfair advantage and thats all I will say :)
The Games Showcase is about Games first and foremost, and a product-less promise of something 2+ years down the line without anything tangible to show would've been a distraction from the games. We don't need time spent during the 2025 Games Showcase to talk about some theoretical early days corporate planning for an integrated PC-like Windows-based Xbox-branded console box launching in holiday 2027.

I still think this thing launches a year ahead of PS6.

Desktop PC, handheld PC, and console

Last I checked, ps5 with a disc drive is the same price as Series x without.
And both charge 50$ premium over digital edition.
Also Sony is not the one that charges 500$ for storage expansion this gen.

Future, who knows.

My contention is more to do with the Pro pricing, which retailed for 700 (already a chunky premium) and then the additional disc drive which was suspiciously understocked for months during the PS5 Pro launch window, resulting in inflated prices in the second hand market. One of Sony's rare pathetic moments if you ask me.

Desktop PC, handheld PC, and console
I don't see any reason that with the proper prioritization and optimization, that the ~2027 Series X successor can't be a Windows-based device, simply far more powerful than the ROG Xbox Ally X, because it doesn't need to have the ability to operate portably on battery. I feel like that's the direction this is all going. Xbox console + Xbox PC finally merge into one unified device/library, and they solve the issue of native back compat so the console library can fully move over.

Seems like a win-win to me.

Ok??🤷

Then, what an example of hypocrisy when you're able to see console wars among people who prefer that XBOX continues to bet on hardware and backwards compatibility... while you don't mention those who made fun of it every day, insulted other users, and even opened threads congratulating each other and uncorking champagne against the possibility of this announcement...🤷

Ignore him, he makes victim posts when people attack PS and says shit like "waah I hate all this fanboy warring, make it stop!" and then goes on the attack of Xbox and fans on the other side of his mouth.
