Your Realistic Expectations for Final Fantasy Versus XIII (FFXV) E3 Showing

How is it lazy?

Don't really understand this mindset.

I think lazy isn't the right word for it, but if it happened, it would be a bit strange. I mean, it would end up becoming one of those weird pieces of trivia years down the line, "Did you know that FFXV used to be a spin-off of FFXIII/the FNC series at some point during its development!??!". Has something like this ever happened before where a spin-off of some series ended up becoming a main series title for whatever reason?

It'd probably be thought of as less "lazy" by fans if they didn't wait 6+ years to do it and if the decision was made early on before we got trailers and etc.

Not really. Last year they said the game was being complex to realize due to its ambition, but the team was still working hard on it. This is unlike The Last Guardian, which has been said to have some technical difficulties.

Also, didn't The Last Guardian's team have to start over several times from scratch?

It's not a "spin-off" though. It was meant to be treated like a mainline entry in all aspects but name. This is the exact reason why it should be changed. At this point they probably already realized this.

No.

Starting over from scratch implies they dumped the concept entirely and started to scratch out a new one. If this title is still to be released and on PS4 only, then that means they trashed the development for the PS3 but most likely moved on with the same assets but rebuilt it for PS4.

Trying to be realistic here.

It's renamed to FFXV, is next gen. Looks to be incredible and is released within the next 12 months, restoring the series to its former glory. It's well written, and features open ended rewarding gameplay.

Not so much the concept, but I remember reading that they had to 'start over' a few times.

I guess it was this thread where he mentioned needing to "re-do" the work that they had done in addition to this quote from KennyLinder:
I don't know, but I know it's been in development on Orbis for a long time now. It's platform has been questionable for nearly two years, but the last time it was restarted (it's been restarted a number of times), it was moved to Orbis.

I shouldn't have said 'start from scratch', I suppose. Sorry!

We're getting off-topic here but yeah, rebuilt, restart or for all I know realistically maybe even "from scratch".

It's been long enough, but my logic tells me that they kept the concept, art assets, etc. but scrapped the plans for the PS3. But yeah this is off topic now so lets stop, no need to apologize. Was just trying to be specific ^^.

To spin it back on topic, it seems as though things have been progressing at the very least with Versus, we just haven't gotten to see any results at all. We even have had a few hints of more news this year with that Noctis perfume and this tweet from Hashimoto after Versus missed TGS telling us to look forward to something next year. (if not at at E3, then TGS2013?) That tweet coupled with the "please be excited" for E3 this year probably is hinting at a potential cross-gen release.

What are my realistic expectations for Versus at E3? Nothing. I expect nothing. I've been waiting so long for Versus - even bought my PS3 because of the thing - that I don't really think I can take another letdown.

At this point, it's just easier to expect nothing and be surprised by something good than to hope for the best and be "rewarded" with more Lightning. I know there's all the evidence mounting in support of it making an appearance, but we've all been burned before. So many times.

That being said, if they DO show it, I'll probably lose my mind, as long as they don't do something ridiculous like move it to the 3DS, iPhone or XBone.

PS4 launch title. Oh you said realistic...damn... honestly its kind of hard to expect anything from this game at this point. It could have gone through several iterations since we last saw it. Heck we might not even see it at E3.

Yes, FFIX wasn't a numerical entry for a while, there were a couple other strange things with projects intend to be Final Fantasies, and not ending up that way. A few years ago, I remember an interview about Versus, where they were asked why it wasn't XV (well, I guess it was XIV at the time), and they remarked that it was too different to be a mainline entry, (to be honest, I would imagine that's where the rumour the game has turned into a Command-RPG), but I think it's more likely SE have realized that something being notably different from the mainline games is exactly what they need.

Ultimately a name means very little, especially in the instance of Final Fantasy games. Every game is a new slate after all. The name is branding, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is an exceptionally poor name. The use of the word Versus is moronic, it implies a fighting game or something. Using the XIII number is also terrible, not just because XIII isn't thought highly of, but because it was already years ago, it automatically dates the product, it's also awful because it makes it seem like a spin-off, not a main game, and in every way, it appears to be. All these things could be overcome with marketing, but why bother when you can just eliminate the issue out of hand?

While I, and any sane person would agree, this is the company who came up with the title Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and gave XIII two sequels, so you never know...

Realistically? Some gameplay, new trailer, a time frame for release if not a solid date. Lots of asking for us to be excited, please.

I expect it to be completely absent, and, to twist the knife further, we'll see a FFXV that is no way related to Versus.

We've become so jaded, we have. But with Square being the way it is...this is probably what's going to happen. And to twist the knife even further, it'll be the same kind of "pure sci-fi with some magic thrown in to make it fantasy" setting as XIII was.

That is my realistic expectation.

If I'm pretending that it's going to be there, my second realistic expectation is that it will not be interesting to me at all.

What I'd like to happen is that it will be there and knock my socks off.

We'll see in a couple of weeks.

It won't come out for 3/4 years and will be a disappointment.

Anything more than that will pleasantly surprise me when it comes to Square Enix.

We're not getting a date unless its a general date like "later this year" or "2014', but nothing specific. Unless its also a launch title and Sony reveals PS4 release date o_o

I'm just excited to see a real game running Luminous.

I'll be extremely disappointed if it's not still a PS3 game as I bought a PS3 partially in anticipation for a good Final Fantasy game this generation. It still hasn't happened, nor is there Kingdom Hearts III or a home console Dragon Quest game. Ultimately, this upcoming generation, I only have room in my life for one gaming platform and that's going to be a PC, so a PS3 version is still expected or else I'm just going to have to go without the game... not buying a whole new console for one game promised to be on its predecessor from early in its life cycle.

PS4 Exclusive and it better blow my mind. I want to watch the trailer and feel hyped and ecstatic. Anything less would be a disappointment.

The flight through the city on that flying thingy in the 2011 trailer looks like a super-awesome setpiece, as do the city portions in general (the fight against the behemoth looks intense, hopefully it's challenging). Other than that, what we saw in the 2011 trailer was 1) somewhat early from a development POV and 2) probably very early in the game in general, so you're not going to see the epicest shit of the game during that point in the game (from a gameplay POV, the game obviously has a somewhat explosive beginning with the invasion & all).

You mean this?

Buildings in the flight part are very low detailed, but the graphics is not the problem, it gives me lots of deja vu, the fight with the behemoth is the part that reminds me of crisis core the most.
I'm not saying that it would be a bad game, it would probably be an awesome game, but everything looks somewhat too similar to what i already played.
Agito/type 0 instead is different, it has a completely different atmosphere, it really looks like a war, it has blood, chaos, death and violence, lots of students named like cards to play with and so on, there's even a strategy part!

In essence... I just hope its been purposefully withheld from the spotlight all these years until it is mostly done.

If it reemerges and we have another 1-3+ years of hype cycle after that, I'm gonna be pissed.

I think it's very possible this shows up even as a different game, but it'll be very sad if this and The Last Guardian end up becoming the highlights for PS4.
