Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

Come on guys, enough with the drama. Games like Galaxy 2 are wholly dependent on the pointer controls (Yoshi aiming, sling stars, those gravity stars, blowing Mario around in the bubble, etc etc etc). To rework the game to be fully and responsively playable on the gamepad would require a remake released at triple the price.

They need to do Zangeki no Reginleiv for the US this way, like they did the original Sin and Punishment for N64 VC on the original Wii this way.

I still want the disc versions of Pandora's Tower and MPT, but this is cool for Nintendo to make available. They should make all the NEW! Play Control games available this way too.

...the Wii U comes with a sensor bar. And the GamePad has one built in, on top of that.
If you're in Europe and have the Basic Wii U there is no sensor bar. Given third party ones are totally terrible here (yes it is amazing how third parties fuck up inserting an array of IR LED) it could be hassle...if there weren't about a billion Wiis to salvage one from.

I have a horrible bug where Wii mode displays the wrong colours since Nintendo did an early Wii U update. It doesn't send the right signal over HDMI unless you've gone to Wii U settings and set it to 480p in advance before booting Wii mode.

It doesn't affect everyone, but it's known and common enough.

I'm assuming this bug will also show with these releases. Which is annoying.

I refuse to play a 3D Mario with the shitty Wiimote!

...? It's pretty non-intrusive in the Galaxy games. They use the pointer, which is really accurate and not 'waggle' at all, for quite a few things, but aside from that the only waggle you need is for the spin jump. It's a little imprecise but the way Mario handles was changed to accomodate that. The gyroscope isn't used at all except for the admittedly shitty Monkey Ball style levels and Manta ray levels, but there's only 4(?) of those and there's no compulsory need to complete them; I can't think of any other uses of the waggle.

That's sweet! Will probably get Punch Out! and SMG2, is there an online shop for Wii U, sorry I'm new on the platform.

Wait what, so I can prop my Gamepad up using the provided stand underneath my TV and use that as a sensor bar?

Where are the LEDs, besides the camera?

They're not always on. Only when playing Wii mode in gamepad mode are they turned on.

ahh.. k.. although from reports a little bit up it looks like "booting" these games does in fact take the system into Wii mode. So it seems like the sensor lights on the gamepad will be fine.

Man... so does this mean the US will FINALLY friggin get Disaster" Day of Crisis?

well, you are wrong.

Ok, just booted galaxy 2. It is sd as expected. I don't think that there is any additional post processing, but I am not sure (maybe it is a bit softer, I don't own galaxy 2 so can't make an exact comparison). There is a black frame around the picture despite nothing like that when playing wiiu games.

Edit: Btw, can you calibrate the wiimote in game?

Damn this is amazing.
A lot of Wii games are really hard to find (or ridiculously overpriced) were I live.

I'm going to get Galaxy 2 and Metroid Trilogy for sure. Hopefully we get a Skyward Sword, Fire Emblem and Xenoblade release soon

So to be clear, these are 1:1 ports right, so far as we know? Nothing extra besides gamepad play for CC supported games?

Definitely in for Galaxy 2 and Punch Out, seems weird they aren't putting Galaxy 1 up. I wonder if we can actually expect regular uploads instead of getting nothing for months on end.

Either way, I'm pretty excited. Time to rebuild that Wii collection, and my reasoning for homebrew (disc installs) has gone down since these will be comfy on my hard drive.

The original game was 60fps. The upscaling is just due to the game running in Wii Mode like every other physical Wii game you've played on the Wii U.

EDIT: Deleted original tweet.

I really hope that they also release digital versions of Xenoblade and The Last Story...

I'd pick up at least the former immediately.

What!? They run within a black frame?

they are not ports. The are eShop downloads that merely launch your Wii U into Wii mode and act like the game is in the disc drive. It is identical to you actually buying the disc game and putting it in your Wii U.

If there was a way to remap buttons like in Virtual Console games, I would have bought Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Donkey Kong Country Returns.

I feel compelled to get Metroid Prime Trilogy just because the physical copy is so rare. More than that, though, I'm glad that Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment are getting another chance.

Japan's getting Zangeki no Reginleiv. I really wish that backwards compatibility and Virtual Console were used to sell newly localized game, but that will never happen. :(

They need to do Zangeki no Reginleiv for the US this way, like they did the original Sin and Punishment for N64 VC on the original Wii this way.

Sin & Punishment was already in English even in the original N64 release. Zangeki no Reginleiv is in Japanese, and supposedly has a gigantic script with tons of a voice acting.

For everyone asking for gamepad controllers for galaxy 2, how would that even work, Yoshi mechanics really rely on it as well as other parts of the games, like collecting start bits and transfering from those gravity planets.

No idea how that would work with a gamepad.

Metroid Prime though, thats another story, the game already has full controller support in the Gamecube releases.

Still, im not going to complain, this is maybe one of the first times that I have seen proper prices by Nintendo, they usually over price stuff.

People are being ridiculous. I have no ideal how this would work without pointer controls. They would have to code over so much and change so much of how the game is used.

If people would sit and think how the wiimote was used in the game think how to translate this to the gamepad they would realize it just wouldn't work.

Maybe using the stylus? Then people would complain still.

Plays amazing on Dolphin with my 360 controller.

How do you collect star bits or the yoshi part?

This is a megaton for me as I've been trying to get a copy of Punch Out for a while, but it goes for around $70 new.

If DKCR somehow works without the waggle to roll nonsense, I'd pick that up too.

that black border is normal for every Wii game played on Wii mode on a Wii U.

sounds exactly like the Wii game retrofitted to work from Wii U digitally.

Ahhh this means Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword may be coming. The only non digitally available title would be Four Swords Adventures.

To rework the game to be fully and responsively playable on the gamepad would require a remake released at triple the price.

I've beaten SMG2 on my original Wii and disagree. I haven't played it on a PC, but people emulate that functionality fine without a Wii remote from what I can gather. Stuff that hobbyists implement for free. Probably using a mouse if I had to guess, something the touch pad would probably be great for. Triple the price? Are you serious? It would be incredibly minor programming and even if it wasn't 100% ideal, it wouldn't mean the Wii remote couldn't remain the preferred method.

I'm not sure why everyone is so upset over non-Gamepad controls for games that only used the Wiimote. Galaxy 2 wouldn't work right at ALL with traditional controls, mostly because of Yoshi and the star-bits.

I suppose the Prime Trilogy could overall work without them, as Prime 1 and 2 were GC games, but I wouldn't expect them to basically rework things such as the grapple controls in 3 to a button without charging it as a full port and just remastering the whole game.

And really, for $10 these are pretty sweet deals.
