Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

It isn't a great scaler, it's just a line doubler. What was once 640x480 (native Wii NTSC resolution) becomes 1280x960. That's why there are black bars, because 960p doesn't fill up a full 1080p.
It has black bars because the Wii's output includes them. We didn't see those before because most TV's have overscan at 480p. The safe area is 640x456
out of 672x480. That's exactly how the Wii's video output looks on a scaler at 1080p.

Only thing I hate is that I still have to use the Wii Remote and nunchuck with most of those. I hate that control scheme. Also wish they would update the firmware to make it where any Wii game, even on disc, that allows a classic controller pro can use the Gamepad instead.

Shooterlike games like Metroid play much better with Wiimote and Nunchuk. And a great part of the fun of Galaxy is collecting stars with Wiimote while controlling Mario with the Nunchuk.

I am hoping for Fire Emblem wii, but plan on getting Punchout, MPT. I would get Pandora's Tower and Kirby if they release on sale aslo.

I hope some third parties get on board with this.

there's a lot of hidden gems that were dismissed by the "LOL Wii" mentality. Wii had an amazing library, such a shame it wasn't an HD console, that mad it sadly overlooked by "core" gamers.

Probably talked about to death already but: why SMG2 and not SMG1 first? Probably blasphemy to even mention this but I've yet to play any of the Galaxy games and I don't really want to start with the sequel. But I feel like I should grab it anyway especially if it's being discounted in the first week.
I just bought the first game for $10 on eBay with free shipping. Just look around a bit and you'll find a similar deal.

I'm about to beat Metroid Fusion and was yearning for to play the Primes but they were stupid expensive last I looked during Black Friday. This is fantastic.

It's interesting they don't position these are Virtual Console games, but rather just as Wii Games.

I thought it'd be easier to sell them if they consider them Virtual Console games (even if they aren't technically on a virtual console).

I even put Mario Galaxy 2 in my folder of Virtual Console titles

Picked up SMG. I really wish this was the promotion they were running two years ago instead of the SNES and NES games.

But in either case I how this picks up quick and gets a good amount of support.

Think about it this way.. It's not a "Virtual" Console. Wii U is not "virtually" a Wii, it is a Wii. It's in the name, and it actually contains the chipset of the Wii.

What are the odds for Xenoblade to be released?

Xenoblade hnnggggg

Gamepad support hngggggg (would rather have Wii U Pro support but alas)

No need for a New 3DS hnnngggggg

However it won't get released before Xenoblade N3DS loses most of its sales momentum.

A while or never. They don't want to hurt the 3DS version sales.

I bought SMG2 for reals now. I'm looking forward to the Prime Trilogy. Never played trilogy collection because I played them all individually. But that price is too hard to say no at.
I'm glad the Kirby Adventure Wii game is coming too, because I never knew it existed till recently.

I booted up SMG2 just to see if it worked, and I noticed a black frame. What's that all about?

"Games compatible with the Wii Classic Controller Pro cane be used with Wii U Gamepad"

So are any of the games even compatible with the Classic Controller Pro? SMG 2 isn't. MP Trilogy isn't.

If none of the games are compatible who cares if the gamepad can be used? (since it can't....cuz the games aren't compatible with the classic pro)

They will release more Wii games over time... just wanted to say the state of things with the new method they developed to package them.

Because other games will come later, like Sin and Punishment 2.

Was hoping for HD Remasters of Galaxy. The Wii u scaler is garbage.

Edit: or maybe it's the current scaler performance in Wii mode that's crap.
Setting my wii u to 480p prior to launching into wii mode and letting my TV Scale to 1080p is far superior than letting the Wii u do it. Maybe these games being launched in native Wii U mode might fare better.

I played SMG2 on the Wii U. It looked like vaseline poop on my 50" TV. If these games upscale better than Wii mode games, I will buy seriously buy them all. If they look the same, It'll be a pass for me.

I just played some Kirby's Adventure on Wii U through the disk, the scaler seems alright to me. I wouldn't describe Wii games on Wii U as blurry, certainly better than through the Wii itself.

This is an amazing deal for everyone who missed out, but a bit of a kick in the pants for anyone who was expecting their Wii discs to work this way. The Wii menu shouldn't be a thing I need to crawl through.

Definitely grabbing Prime Trilogy, I've been wanting to replay those for awhile now and have just been too lazy to unbox my Wii or GameCube. Plus Wii remote controls will be cool for the first two. Might get Punch-Out, but definitely want Kirby whenever that's out.

Looking forward to seeing what else they release this way, though I can't say there are a ton of Wii games I wanted that I didn't grab back in the day. This is especially great for games that can be too expensive these days, like Kirby and Prime Trilogy. Really great idea.

So now that Iwata said playing wii games is possible outside of Wii mode, they should just unify the Wii Shop and Eshop and allow wiiware games and VC games right?

I think it is extremely shortsighted of them to continue to release games for 'WiiU eshop'. They should just call it eshop and license content for the eShop, not the WiiU eShop. This will help future compatibility.

Just got a chance to play SMG2. Looked pretty good on my old Vizio 42". I don't have any black bars except at the very beginning and even with the jaggies it still looks pretty damned great in motion.

If you don't have black bars and you are playing with the Wii U in 1080p, your TV is overscanning everything FYI.
