MGS5 - "Snake won't really speak much at all. More of a silent protagonist."

bish gets all the credit :)
Via the IGN video (5:50).

Kojima:
"As much as possible, Snake will act based on the player rather than doing things like making spontaneous comments or flirting with women. In fact. this time, Snake won't really speak much at all. MGS5 is an open world game focused on giving freedom to the player who will drive Snake's action. Snake himself will be more of a silent protagonist similar to Mad Max in Mad Max 2. It's the characters around him who will expand the story."

I guess the less Kiefer the better. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's really dumb.

Well, guess it depends on how they implement it, but I'm not sure I like the idea of making the "player" the main character.

This was known since it was announced, and I'm pretty sure they said the script was complete before Kiefer was cast.

This will be fine.

My bet is enormously cut down codec dialog via the dynamic/realtime calls they used in Ground Zeroes, and all Snake's dialog being in cutscenes. There's no way they hired Sutherland not to talk.

I took it more as Big Boss being more of a cipher for whatever the player wants his personality to be. Doesn't mean he can't have a ton of dialog.

I have mixed feelings on this... On one hand, I really dislike Kiefer's boring performance. On the other hand, I REALLY dislike the idea of Snake being silent. His opinions and statements on what was happening around him were a huge part of the Metal Gear series...

I'm really not liking what they are doing with the character. During the first trailers, I imagined Big Boss would become more and more like Solidus. Loud, proud, VERY commanding with a strong voice full of authority.

But nope... =(

It's Old Snake all over again.

This whole idealism of player avatar is the most overrated and stupid modern gaming trend. You want to put me the character's shoes? Write an interesting and emotive character. Big Boss is so much more than a player avatar.

There must be something else going on, otherwise I must say that this dampened my expectations.

FFS, this is why Sutherland was a mistake.

I don't get what the logic behind suddenly changing this is, other than Kojima just deciding he wanted to be more like less-chatty, Western games. It doesn't seem to make much sense at all from a story or character perspective?

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
That news reminds me of how Troy Baker was cast as the lead in COD:AW but barely got any lines, it's like "Yea let's take this awesome as hell actor and put him in our game. But let's have him say as little as possible."

I guess Snake will be Quiet in this game
You win the thread.

Not a big fan of that. ._. Kiefer is a great actor, use him.

I'm sure he'll talk as much as necessary in cutscenes, it just sounds like codec banter and random dialogue is out. Shame, really. A lot of MGS's charm is from the codec stuff. Oh well. I just have to accept this is a totally different game, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Weird, I wonder what mind games Kojima is playing now? That said what's the point of getting Kiefer Sutherland and ditching Hayter if you're not going to use him that much?
