Metroid Prime Federation Force Announced (Next Level, 3DS, 4 Player, Mission Based)

I think it looks pretty good. I actually liked Hunters, though part of that was all the different rival characters. Probably the best thing Nintendo showed off imo.

I mean not for sure, but when was the last time we saw an F-Zero game? Even if it does return, it may not return in the same way, a la Chibi Robo.

The difference is that both main and spin-off F-Zero games were doing badly, whereas this seems like a relatively inexpensive experimentation.

Don't get me wrong, if you're disappointed, you're disappointed. I don't think anyone is wrong to dislike the game. It's just people acting as though the existence of this game somehow ruins the entire franchise that I think is a step too far.

I'm also not saying that you're necessarily saying that, I'm just speaking in general.

I really feel bad for the people who made this game

This isnt their fault and they have to take the heat as collateral. ..

Nintendo hung em out to try cuz they dont give a shit about metroid fans

There is no "Metroid cycle" beyond shitty revisionist history courtesy of Other M fans. Metroid Prime was critically acclaimed on release and sold over 2 million copies.
... and trashed on message boards until release. And a good chunk of people kept complaining after launch. And Fusion got trashed and still is - you even recently laughed at people saying they preferred Fusion to Super Metroid in some GAF thread. And Echoes nearly bombed and got bashed a lot. And Corruption was accused of betraying Metroid. Etc.

Skimming through the thread, does it seem like the posts calling people who are disappointed "Butthurt, Entitled, etc..." seem sycophantic to anyone else? I mean, positivity is one thing, but a lack of understanding why people would be disappointed is another.

Like, nobody would go and say that Shenmue fans were being entitled when they had only the browser game to go on.

(Or maybe I'm just a delusional, paranoid twat.)

So I guess Other M broke the cycle by still being universally loathed after release?

My problem is I think the people who expected a Metroid game that would make them happy on Wii U are delusional. Nintendo isn't going to knowingly light a mountain of money on fire. Maybe next console.

How about a metroid game on the 3DS

that, you know, actually plays like Metroid

doesnt seem that bad after watching more gameplay
graphics look like kid icarus uprising

still would rather have a game with samus
but i dont think this'll turn out terrible
and maybe it'll garner some more interest for Metroid

i dunno i can't get mad at this

I feel really bad for Next Level Games. After Luigi's Mansion, they were riding high enough that Nintendo fans would have eaten up anything they put out. This game could kill off that good will in the blink of an eye.
Or worse...

Oh, Fusion is still trashed a lot and it's not hard to find someone who'd trash Echoes or Corruption.

But Other M really got beyond the usual cycle with the completely nuts "OMG sexist" hysteria wave. Which is hilarious, since all the evil characters in the game are men, and all the positive/developed characters are women minus only two men, one being Black and the other sacrificing himself to avoid Samus sacrificing herself, because that man thought she was much more powerful and important for the safety of the Federation than he was. It's always funny to see a feminist game being bashed by SJW.

But nah, it's not "universally loathed", it's just that the mob that hates it makes people not post in threads about it. But it's pretty popular in the "unpopular opinion" threads.

And it probably bombed mostly because of brand recognition and a Wii at the end of its life and destroyed by piracy rather than quality.

I think you can please Metroid fans without developing a big HD game. For example, the game I was after was a 2D game in the style of Super on the 3DS. And I imagine that kind of game would have been received positively considering the last one was Fusion.

I mean yeah, some people don't like those games, but everyone hates Other M. And the game is fundamentally sexist and murders Samus's character haha.

I don't think you understand what happened in the plot. You just like read the script while ignoring what actually happened.

To be honest, Other M's metacritic score should have been indicative of an over-reactive fan reaction, anyway. Even Sticker Star sits pretty at 75, but if you went by what some fans said, you'd think it was Sonic 06-tier.

That feel when Other M has a higher metacritic than Paper Mario Sticker Star

I can't help thinking this was originally a new IP, but Nintendo didn't (especially coming off of Codename STEAM bombing hard) have enough confidence in it, so they rebranded it to something they thought had better sales potential.

I think a lot of anger and hate towards the game isn't due to the game itself (it looks FINE), but because it's a slightly goofy spin-off instead of "OMG Retro's Metroid Prime 4!" or "OMG Metroid DREAD!"

It's a quirky spin-off title, right next to Metroid Prime Pinball. And Pinball was fantastic for being, you know, a Metroid-themed pinball game.
I actually agree with this but honestly I've been waiting for Metroid Dread since the first rumours. By the look of things, Ghost Song is the closest I'll get.

They could have done rebranded Fast Racing NEO into F-ZERO to move sales but they didn't.

Oh, Fusion is still trashed a lot and it's not hard to find someone who'd trash Echoes or Corruption..

Because there is always going to be a group that says "Oh that's no a X game, it does everything different. I hate it", and then there is going to be a group that says "It's the same damn game all the time".

Metroid Fusion is one of my favorite games ever. I could care less about the Prime 2 or Prime 3. Well I sort of liked Prime 3.

So thinking more about the game, the foundation for an actually really great game is there.

Four months have passed since the Phazon Incident. Entire planets' ecosystem's have been thrown into chaos. Although the Phazon has since disappeared, its effects are felt across the galaxy. In their mission to keep peace in the galaxy, the Galactic Federation has sworn to rebuild and restore these these planets and their environments.

You are a class 3 marine, trained in ecological warfare and 'pest' management. You, and your squad, have been tasked with exterminating contaminated fauna, removing the invasive species brought forth by the Space Pirates, and collecting samples of unique individuals for research. You have been granted full clearance to destroy any wildlife that hinders your mission. The galaxy is counting on you.

And the story and missions would be about the Federation cleaning up the wrecked planets in a post-Phazon galaxy. Planets with invasive species, giant monsters driven mad by Phazon withdrawal, and special Pirate created hybrids that the federation wants for "reasons above your security clearance." It would be co-op and you'd have to travel around these planets and kill or capture the particular animal as per the mission. Sort of full on Monster Hunter. Except the monsters would be insane from Phazon. Or rather a lack of Phazon that they had become fatally addicted to.

The style wouldn't be chibi at all, but rather more based on the actual Prime series.

Battle Ball would be the chibi style or whatever and would be a time wasting multiplayer minigame and have no relevance at all and nobody would care about it. It would be Prime 2 Multiplayer levels of not caring. I would honestly just drop this part and focus entirely on making a neat first person Monster Hunter clone set in the Metroid universe.

Since it's post Phazon, you can visit some of the planets from the Prime games and see what they're like without Pirates or Phazon or anything. You have to hunt stuff like Flaagra spawns or leftover Ing or whatever. Basically play up the Prime nostalgia really heavy.

I think this game needs work.
- The art is kind of boring and very out of style for the Metroid series. It feels like a Nintendo Land minigame, not a Prime spin off. We've had two Prime spinoffs already and they still looked like they belonged in the Metroid universe.
- The world and the new enemies are so generic. Why is the giant monster called "Ice Monster." How can you keep a straight face after fighting Shriekbats and Zoomers and then kill something called "Ice Monster" Yea, no. Develop a world. Retro did all the heavy lifting, take their creatures and run with it. Why is this Ice Monster not some variant of a Sheegoth. Call it "Alpha Sheegoth" and run with that. Retro even had a design for an alpha Sheegoth they never used. Just steal it. Write some lore too. Maybe not a scan visor, but add a bestiary.
- Battleball looks dumb. Just drop it. Like it doesn't need to exist, you already have a multiplayer game, you don't need some side mode nobody will play taking resources from world building and refining the real game.

I hope in the 1 year they have until release they take a good look at what they can do to improve the premise. The idea is there. It can work, I know it can. Exploring creatures and nature in the Metroid series would be awesome. A first person Monster Hunter can be awesome.

Let's be fair, MP2's multiplayer was horrible and it was about as bare-bones as you can get. Hunters multiplayer was fun if ruined by hacking.

Eh... I tried both MP modes once each. That was enough for me. Hunters MP had more depth, but had an inferior control scheme. MP2 MP was the polar opposite.

lol, people hacked Hunters though? That's hilarious.

I don't think this game looks particularly interesting but leave it to GAF to take a "meh" looking game and take it as a personal insult or a "desecration" of the franchise. I am super curious as to what Retro is up to though. I'd also love it if Nintendo could do a smaller budget, 2.5D Super Metroid style game (that would be a nice "spinoff") but I worry people won't be satisfied with a smaller scale title?

I mean the whole things terrible, but I'd argue normalized sexism in a game meant for children is pretty bad. Worse than some hack plot holes.

It's no worse than what's standard. Would it be better without? Certainly, but removing the sexism doesn't make Other M's story beats any more gratifying or its loose ends any less slack. It's like piss icing on a shit pie.

You take it off, it's still a shit pie.

Yeah, I suppose that could be done. I wasn't really thinking 2D. I apologize for the blasphemy.

That's true, but they have the potential do actual real world harm, which is worse than making a game in the Metroid series have a story that doesn't make sense.

And it's certainly worse than quite a few games I'd say, especially since up until that point Samus was one of Nintendo's best female characters. Not anymore...

If there's one thing you can't criticize Fusion for, is for lacking in the gameplay department. It was a bit bogged down with the constant navigation room visits, though. Their existence in and of itself isn't bad but you're forced to visit them way too frequently. Once per area would have been enough.

I agree with this too. I loved Hunters so I'm looking forward to this.
