It's an off-shoot of a (relatively) already struggling franchise, at least in terms of sales. The die-hards might be there, but I can't really see this one being a giant mover.

Granted, it's only a first look, but people barely get any Metroid games at all, not like Mario, where Mario Tennis helps tie back into the yearly Mario game sales.

The cancellation petition, is of course, quite silly.

This game is just like the mario 3d world reveal. So much hate, but once nintendo shows it more before it's release. All of you will says this is awesome.

Why do you believe this is the form the Metroid brand is taking? That is a terrible assumption to make. That would assume that the next Metroid game will resemble this in style and concept, basically ignoring the entire history of the series. That's not "the form the brand is taking." As everyone is saying, it's a spinoff.

and the controls. I don't care what people say, I could not figure out a good way to play that game. At least if it were on Wii, Wii U or N3DS, it'd have good controls that I could play.

I don't know how far out this is (they can say early all they want, I know they'll push it), but they need to ditch the chibi stuff.
 
My own MonHun analogy got me a bit more hyped. I hope Federation Forge is hinting at upgrade paths for weapons etc based on items obtained during missions.

EDIT: It's Federation Force. What the hell was I seeing...lol. Anyway, this hope for some unexpected depth to the progression.

Retroid for Wii U would have been awesome but Next Level is making this so I don't think it deserves to be a casualty of disappointment over Metroid U.
 
This is meant to be a spinoff to tide fans over due to long waits between titles. Miyamoto said they were planning several such titles for their franchises and obviously this is one of them. They'd have no reason to tide us over if there was nothing to tide us over for, and obviously they're not using the Metroid brand to sell a new ip since Metroid isn't that popular in the first place. I see no problem with them expanding the Metroid universe with a spinoff. They've been wanting to do a spinoff ever since Hunters.

How many of the people upset reacted like this when the first Metroid game in 8 years turned out to be a first person game?

I don't think the level of hate is comparable at all. I don't think the situations are comparable at all for that matter.

In this thread we have had everything from Zelda cycles, Metroid cycles, and ill-fitting comparisons to provide complicated and wrong explanations for a simple fact: People are not impressed with this new game.

It's also a terrible assumption to assume that there's going to be a Metroid game after this, when literally nothing has been announced.

Spin-off or no, this exists, a mainline Metroid game does not. That's why people are pissed off.

The controls have a secret: wrist strap. It was a little awesome accessory that used to come with the DS that you put in your thumb so you could use it as a stylus. I did not like MPH controls as well until I discovered this. Then, I loved it. I don't really know why Nintendo didn't add it to the 3DS as well. In retrospect, it would have made Kid Icarus's controls much better.

yeah, I thought the treehouse showed how it was done.

The slow moving mechs meant that all the players needed to work together as a team to achieve the objective.

Well, it hasn't been that long since the last Metroid. Truthfully, Other M probably over saturated the franchise (it didn't help that it was bad). What Metroid needs is a total reboot. To make it more popular, it probably needs to be more action oriented (whilst retaining its exploration elements, of course). If it releases on NX, the graphics bump from that system should help it attract alot of attention at a future E3. Hopefully Retro's hard at work on that right now :)

I think they went with that because it's a mobile game. Chibi style characters are easier to read on mobile.

I tried that, and it still didn't help. I even tried on the DSi XL and that didn't help either. Whereas for KI:U I had little problem controlling it until I got to 8.0 or higher on the intensity gauge. I even tried MPH after playing KI:U and it still didn't help, so I dunno what the issue was.

This is getting soooo embarrassing. Why would you think they're doing this INSTEAD of what you call a "real" Metroid?

They're not doing Triforce Heroes instead of a real Zelda. They're not doing Mario Maker or Paper Mario stuff instead of real Mario games.

They're expanding the Metroid franchise with a 3DS spinoff. Everyone needs to just take a few moments, breathe, and realize that.

You should really think about what environment the games you referenced were released in. Mario Kart and Mario Tennis weren't the first glimpses we had seen of Mario after a 5-year stretch of radio silence. They were releases that happened on off-years while great mainline releases were happening around them in close proximity.

People weren't increasingly concerned that Nintendo had abandoned the franchise while years ticked by as they said nothing about it. Nobody was looking for redemption for Mario platformers, desperate for a reminder that Nintendo still understood the franchise after widespread disappointment with the last installment.

Context is an important thing.

The reaction to SD Metroid Battle Rumble would have been more open-minded if it was sandwiched between two decent mainline releases. As the first game bearing the Metroid name we'll see in 6 years? When the last note they left the franchise on was a sour one? This ain't the game you present.

The problem with this comparison is that Nintendo actually made Zelda and Mario games in the last five years.

eh what, no it doesnt need a reboot

Metroid's story is actually at a turning point right now in such a way that it's possible for them to naturally integrate more action oriented gameplay into the series

Yeah... poor next level... As I get older, I'm starting to feel more and more sorry for Nintendo with respect to its fans. On one hand, you have a super-motivated fanbase, on the other other hand, they demand AAA quality from every single thing you produce. Its probably alot of pressure. Sort of like a pop-star singer or something.

And fans should be mindful of the context of Metroid's sales numbers. It's a franchise that often struggles to break a million. It's simply not going to be a priority with those kinds of numbers. Also, all this hate doesn't go into a vacuum- there are real people that work on these games. It's okay not to like it, or be dissapointed, but all this raging about it (yes, even on here) doesn't help anyone.

Edit: And I didn't mean a story reboot Satch, just a gameplay reboot (or more specifically, a level design reboot that feature more enemies and more action, primarily).

This too, where the plot seems to be going looks like a head on collision between the Federation and Samus. But that's too interesting.

Also, Mario Party etc exists around Super Mario, a family-fun happy mickey mouse gaming adventure

Federation Force is a spin-off that could easily feature Ben10 characters that exists around a 'mature' and storied franchise with a rich, devoted but more niche fanbase

It seems highly unlikely that a Metroid will not come out in the future. I'm not even sure why I'm even arguing that.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if this game actually turns out to be pretty good, and the idea of playing as the Galactic Federation is exciting, but this reveal felt like the BK: Nuts and Bolt reveal. Good/decent, but horribly mistimed.

Saying something as simple as "As we continue to further and expand the Metroid Universe" beforehand, just to give us an idea that Nintendo isn't making this game and then stopping with the Metroid franchise, would've improved the reveal much more

The only reason for this level of backlash is because this isn't the metroid game people want. That understandable sentiment has manifested in a response that's in no way fair to this game or to NLG and their pedigree. Nintendo misread the spin-off potential for the Metroid Prime series in this case. As others have said, had this game just been called Federation Force and nixed the Prime headline altogether, the reaction wouldn't have been nearly as caustic.

The negativity is spitting in the face of NLG. They've made some great stuff, and it's embarrassing how people are lynching them just because they had the audacity to make a metroid spin-off.

Exactly. This is why Metroid Pinball didn't cause such a meltdown. People accepted it as a cool spin-off because the Metroid Prime series was alive and well (and pretty awesome as well) so everyone had their main Metroid fix. Could you imagine Metroid Pinball existing without the Prime games? It would be as badly received as this one.

Only this is even worse because it looks less like a spinoff to Prime (you are still shooting things, etc) compared to Pinball, which was a completely different genre (well, a pinball) and there was no way for someone to mistake it as a proper Metroid game.

Some Metroid fans are irritable because the most recent Retroid, MP:Corruption, is often thought to be the weakest of the Primes. That was followed by the widely disliked Metroid: Other M. Unfortunately Federation Force is getting a lot of hate just because it's not the return to form for Samus that some people were hoping for.

It kind of sucks for the Next Level Games because their game wouldn't have been getting this much hate if Nintendo had also announced a Retro developed mainline Metroid. They're collateral damage.
 
This is clearly a spin off based on the title alone.

The backlash is truly idiotic.

It's the metroid equivalent of that monster hunter spinoff so just let it go people.

What the fuck, nobody is mad at NLG, they're pissed at the game they're getting and at Nintendo for asking them to make shovelware.

Seriously, need our post-Fusion game. I'm actually hoping the final mission of Federation Force is your commander ordering the players "Hunt down Samus Aran for crimes against the Federation."
