Metroid Prime Federation Force Announced (Next Level, 3DS, 4 Player, Mission Based)

I think Shenmue Online/City is a better comparison for "Outrage at cheap looking spin-off game in an otherwise long dormant/mistreated franchise", but that's also making the assumption people comparing this to DKCTF or WW's initially-bad reception remotely give a shit about context.

It's a spin off for fucks sake people.

It's not like they said here's metroid prime 4 and then showed this.

Did people get like this when metroid prime pinball was announced?

Metroid Prime Pinball wasn't announced at a time when the last good game in the series was nearly a decade ago.

Metroid Prime 2 and Zero Mission - 2004
Metroid Prime Pinball - 2005
Metroid Prime Hunters - 2006
Metroid Prime 3 - 2007

Metroid Other M - 2010
Metroid Prime Federation Force -2016

This isn't a remotely comparable situation

Still my point still stands it's a spin-off to add more backstory to the metroid universe and tide the fans till E3 2016 where they will show a damn teaser trailer of MP4 for NX.

You waited 6 years, you can wait one more.

You mean that game that's not in development? The director of the Prime series already said this is the only Metroid he's working on.

Are there any non-Treehouse showfloor demos? I'm starting to warm up to this. Its not the Metroid or Federation spinoff that I had in mind but I see the potential of it being good on its own merits.

Why couldn't it have been Hunters 2 and for co-op you play as the hunters from the first game? Were they killed or something at the end of the first game? I never finished it. I would even have accepted some sort of multiverse/cross dimension gimmick caused by the enemy to allow for multiples of the same hunter. Having them return would have added far more interesting lore to the Metroid universe.
Lastly, even for a spin-off, even if it didn't have the Metepid label, it still looks like garbage even for a 3DS game. The vast majority of shitty F2P/P2P mobile games even look better.

Mid-2000's was such a glorious time to be a Metroid fan. I hate Nintendo.

:/

I know this is something more in-line with Hunters, but I'm severely disappointed. A big part of the Prime games' appeal to me is it's one-of-a-kind ambiance, the amazing environments and unique art direction. Why bother calling this a Metroid Prime game?

To gather more attention - which it just did.

calling it 'half-life 3' would've gathered even more attention
and a lawsuit; in all seriousness I think naming stuff purely for attention is an idiotic business idea, not that Federation Force is the first game to do this

The game is still in development and is for 2016, the Gameplay IS SOLID and very metroid, they can delay it, work in making it an actual metroid game featuring Samus, and keep the missions and blast ball as sidedishes.

How does that sound?

Frankly, Half-Life is an excellent comparison to make, since Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, Half-Life 2: Episode 1 was released in 2006, and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 was released in 2007 (Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3 were 2002, 2004 and 2007). So fans of both series have been waiting for 8 years for another installment. Of course, circumstances are different, Other M having been released - but that game is anomaly in several ways, and with Half-Life 2: Episode 2's cliffhanger ending, Metroid Prime 3's much less-so.

And what would fan's reactions be if Valve were to announce their next game as a portable-only spinoff carrying the Half-Life brand, where you play as Combine soldiers and play soccer, with no other game even hinted at being in development? I can't say it'd be positive, to say the least.

I'm not opposed to Metroid spin-offs (and after seeing live demos of this game, it looks much better in play than the trailer and screens seemed to,) but it is a shame that it has to stick to the Metroid name when that's come to mean something. (Yes, yes, Metroid Pinball, fair enough.)

It would have been better if Nintendo had started spinning off Samus Aran games early and had been able to make a more flexible brand. (Tomb Raider kind of had the same trouble, and in Angel of Darkness it even tried to split things with a second protagonist, but by then Lara Croft was a Tomb Raider whether she raided tombs or not.) Already Nintendo has difficulty explaining why intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran finds herself mixed up with the same bioweapon organisms every time she pulls into port, if there had been Samus Aran Chronicles early on, and if the Galactic Federation had been established better, this all could have fallen into place.

Well, woulda coulda shoulda ... hopefully it turns out to be good and we can play it and forget about it, and if it's a success then just call it Federation Force 2 and all's fine.

Part of the difference with Half-Life 3 is Valve have been a bit more direct about not really having a focus on finishing it. It's not officially cancelled, and I imagine at some point it'll happen, but they don't seem to shy away from stating they're focused more on services and online multiplayer experiences like TF2, DOTA2 and Left 4 Dead.

Nintendo in comparison probably feels like admitting they simply aren't focused on making games like F-Zero/Metroid*/Eartbhound**/etc. would be suicidal, and while I think MP:FF's reveal was a complete and utter fuck up, the reaction to it sort of proves them right. So instead you're left with vaguer "Well go back to it when we have an appropriate idea", which may fly in the face of Mario/Zelda having a ton of experimental offshoots that could've been applied to a more niche IP but still doesn't sting as much.

*I still think Metroid Prime 4 and/or a 2D Metroid revival is absolutely happening and it's more Other M's failure caught Nintendo's plans for the franchise totally off guard.
** The Mother trilogy is officially finished and outside of a proper Mother 3 English release I don't know why people keep asking for more of it when Itoi is done.

God forbid they do a little world-building as a bridge towards that next game.

Yeah I'm sure the story of the super chibi federation force are meant to build the world of Metroid.

What? Is this based on the same kind of thought that made some people think that Nintendoland was preparing people for the return of old series, or that the Mario Kart DLC was hinting at a new F-Zero?

"I’m also thinking that, in that eventual game between Sylux and Samus that might get made, that I wants to involve the [Galactic] Federation as well," he said. "So it would be a good idea to release a game like Federation Forces to flesh out its role in the galaxy before moving on to that.

I feel like if they removed Prime from the title the backlash would be a lot less. More people would view this more as a reboot of Metroid than a continuation of the Prime series.

I was thinking they should have used a new subtittle. Something like:

Metroid Prime Chronicles: Federation Force.

Using Prime only made it sound like a main game, another reason why everyone is so pissed of.

They used Federation Force subtitle, that's very clear nod to the 4 player online co-op experience.

Signing this petition is a very disgusting thing to do. The guys at Next Level Games must have been working on this for quite some time. Show them some fucking respect. This doesn't hinder development of a real Metroid in any way or form.

It's only been 5 years. We still haven't got close to the wait between Super Metroid and Metroid Prime/Fusion (8 years). I'm not interested in more touchscreen shooters and the c-stick on the New 3DS doesn't seem that precise.

Lol, the angry guy in the Treehouse video is embarrassing. Sounds legitimately annoyed a few times.

As disappointing as the reveal was it looks fun. My friends and I would have been all over this when we were kids.

It is still arrogant to imply that no one wants this game. There could be many who might end up wanting and liking it and to deprive them of that is pure selfishness.

And I say this as someone who is the biggest Metroid Prime fanboy there is but has no interest in this game.

If it's released as a retail game, I'd imagine it'll flop as bad as Codename STEAM did, no matter the name, but I guess we'll see.

While I agree, This doesn't even look like a Next Level game. Next Level games are full of charm, expression, and personality. This game looks as dull, sterile, and void of any sort of essence.

I'm not saying no one wants this game. I'm saying a shit ton of people DON"T want this game.

Hence the 45,000+ dislikes on the trailer, or the nearly 13,000 signatures on that stupid petition.

They're dedicating time and resources to a game that will have, at absolute best, a niche following, and be despised or ignored by everyone else.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opportunity_cost

It hinders development of something people might have actually wanted.

NLG makes games they want to make, they simply have to have permission for IP. They are not owned by Nintendo in any way. They were given Punch-Out as a title to work on -> made a great game -> given Luigi's Mansion -> made a great game.

They chose to make this given the IP they were given as an option, but everything they've made has either been based on minor IP or a spin-off of a major IP. This is another case of the latter.

I doubt anyone foresaw this reaction when this was being greenlit. Its been fairly evident for a long while that Nintendo isn't quite sure how to handle the Metroid franchise, Samus is still an important character to them but her projects have never been breakout hits. They tried shaking up the formula with Sakamoto in charge but that was a total clusterfuck with low sales and huge backlash. Now they're trying some "IP care" with some spin-offs to gauge interest and give fans something tangential/similar to try...

... But it will be left to die. Worst part of it all? It IS Metroid Prime in how it plays and its setting/design. Know how I know? Because we all realized it the moment the mini-game showed up at the NWC. But because it has no Samus and looks to tackle a different point of view... its some great travesty.

Still my point still stands it's a spin-off
True, at least they didn't put Samus there. It's like they worked on a new prototype, thought it was fun enough to mke a game of it and just decided to name it Metroid because it's a known brand.

PS: Btw it will be really fun if they show it at a Nintendo Direct before release and people are like "holy shit" "Federation Force is legit" "what was I thinking starting that petition"...
