31 Days of Horror 5 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

For those of you looking for free, streaming movies I just discovered Shout Factory has their own streaming site. And good news for you hosers out there, this one actually works in Canada, eh!

The horror section is pretty small considering their catalog, but there's a few standouts, including Body Bags, Day of the Dead, Night of the Demons, Nosferatu The Vampyre, Witchboard and our very own 31 Days of Horror favourite, Sleepaway Camp.

It's also available on Roku and works full screen in the PS4 web browser if you don't want to watch movies movies hunched over a computer.

Here is a list from a friend of mine who went through and complied ratings from the members (about 100 at the time) of IMDb's Horror Board from 2007-2011. 500 horror films. It's been my go to guide for the October Challenge over the years.

Top 500 Horror Films List

as long as I live I'm gonna keep trying to find out why anyone likes The Wicker Man

feels like a really bad comedy rather than a horror movie

Here's my partial list (not quite 31 yet, but working on it)

One question: as a Fulci virgin, is it a good idea to watch the Gates of Hell movies on consecutive nights, or should I spread them out more? Everything I've seen or heard about the films suggests I will like them...

It doesn't really matter. They aren't really related to eachother. The only thing they share are thematic similarities. Don't forget Don't Torture A Duckling, personally I think that is his best movie.

This, but I couldn't watch them consecutively anyway. While I love Fulci's movies, some of them can get mind-numbingly boring.

I also agree that Don't Torture a Duckling is his best, plus I've found a new appreciation for how gloriously trashy New York Ripper is. I'd rank it 3rd on my Fulci list.

I'd personally spread them out a bit simply because they don't have a lot of structure and tend to blur in the memory because of it.

I got City and House together in the same set ages ago and probably watched them back to back. For the life of me I can't remember which is which, aside from remembering City having the crazier gore effects.

One of these days I'm going to rewatch all 3, and when I do I'll probably spread them out by a week each.

Thanks for the info. So the whole trilogy thing is just marketing then? Or is it something that Fulci intended?

EDIT: Thanks guys. Perhaps I will spread then out a bit over the month!

I think his best trashy movie is The New Gladiators. Its like hints of Idiocracy way before Idiocracy. Its not really horror, though it is filmed like a horror / thriller.

I think it was marketing and the fact that all three movies were very thematically similar.

No love for Fulci's Murder-Rock: Dancing Death? I dare you to find a better Flashdance inspired giallo.

I think the whole Gates of Hell trilogy thing is one of those fan coined names just to group the movies together. As far as I know it was never an official thing.

Where's that weirdo who was watching the Vomit Gore Trilogy last year.

This was fun last year, but there's no way I can do 31 movies with my current schedule. I miss working the night shift. My only goal is to watch The Green Inferno before the month ends, because I'm ecstatic that it finally got released.

What about A Cat In The Brain? One of the first meta-horror movies (that I can think of) out there

I haven't seen that one yet. If it's a meta-horror I think I'll have to give it a look though.

Lucio Fulci plays a director named Dr. Lucio Fulci that makes a lot of gory horror movies. His gory violent movies soon start to haunt him and make him feel guilty all while real murders begin to take place that are based on the kills in the movies he's been making.

This list is not really in order. I'll be shift stuff all over the place as I see fit.

Hell yes. Best time of the year is here again. I've already made my list but I'm probably going to redo it and add a lot more films that I haven't seen before.

Holy fuck... a ton of the stuff I put on my list is expiring on Netflix October 1st... every fucking year Netflix does this shit. Gotta watch a ton of stuff before the 1st then...

Shit, is there a list? They used to at least put "expiring in 7 days" warnings on pages, now they don't even do that.

How did I let this get to five pages before finding this thread and commenting?! Must be slipping in my old age. This is by far my favorite thing about GAF, and I'm in for as much as I can. Became a dad this year, so 31 might be tough, but I'll do my best. Might have to double or triple up on the weekends.

Question: I watched Suspiria two years ago for the first time at a friend's request, and it quickly became one of my favorite horror movies. I even got to see it in a movie theater here in Japan earlier this year. However, it's the only Argento movie I've seen, and I'm super interested to check out more. What should I watch?

So for a person that doesn't find horrors 'scary' and needs a horror that has a good story. What would you guys recommend?

Has anyone put together a netflix recommendation list yet? Or amazon prime

Just a quick browse through Netflix's Horror category for things I've seen or have heard a good deal about. I didn't check to see what all is leaving soon, though.
This is US Netflix btw

The Blair Witch Project
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Congrats on the parenthood!

As for Argento, there's a few I haven't seen yet but the quality of his work is allllll over the place. You definitely want to stick with his 70s and 80s films.

Also, are you looking for more supernatural/fantasy kind of stuff like Suspiria or more grounded?

For supernatural, Suspiria is actually the first part of his 'The Three Mothers' trilogy, followed by Inferno and The Mother of Tears. I haven't seen either of those because I've heard mixed things about Inferno and Mother of Tears is pretty universally disliked. I can't comment if you should seek them out or not. Phenomena's pretty good, but also pretty crazy.

For grounded stuff, I'm a big fan of his gialli. They're almost all excellent. Tenebre and Deep Red being my favourites. The rest of his gialli never hit the same heights as those two, but I think they're all worth checking out, even the lesser ones like The Card Player and Do You Like Hitchcock? Just be aware some are more straight up thrillers and shouldn't be considered horror.

If you dig Argento's style, you should look into Michele Soavi's films as well if you haven't already seen them. He worked under Argento for many years and shares a similar sense of style. I highly recommend Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore) and StageFright: Aquarius.

New or old it doesn't matter. Even tho I have watched a fair amount of the old horrors. Horror comedies are fine by me.

Hmm.. a good story... Let's see...

The Thing
Rosemary's Baby
The Descent
28 Days Later
Ginger Snaps
Possession

Deep Red and Tenebrae are must watches. Deep Red being my favorite Argento film. Phenomena is a great watch too. I watched Inferno last year for the 31 Days and it's ok but I'd recommend the others first. Bird With The Crystal Plumage and Cat o' Nine Tails are more mystery thrillers and while they're pretty cool, I'd avoid those for this.

Thank you both for the replies! Wow, that's a lot of stuff. I probably prefer the more fantasy style stuff, but I'll definitely check out Deep Red and Tenebrae. I'll look into Soavi's stuff too!

With Suspiria, I like it more and more with each viewing. It gets progressively more haunting each time I watch it. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it!

So for a person that doesn't find horrors 'scary' and needs a horror that has a good story. What would you guys recommend?

Have I mentioned Tenebre or Deep Red yet? :)

More of my usual go-to recommendations:
Dead and Buried
Blood and Black Lace
The Thing ('82)
The Fly ('86)
In the Mouth of Madness
Who Can Kill a Child?
It Follows
Sinister
The Pact
The Descent
I Saw the Devil (Korean)
[REC]
You're Next

Obviously some are more complex than others, but some I feel have quality twists/characters (mainly REC and You're Next) that make up for the simpler plots.

Edit: Looking over my DVDs and saw a few more:
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
The Devil's Backbone
Inside

All Mario Bava films (Bay of Blood, Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, Kill Baby Kill, Baron Blood, etc)
Ju-on
Dumplings
Repo! The Genetic Opera
Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

Carrie (2013)
Dead End
The Devil's Rejects
Madhouse
Frogs
I, Frankenstein
The Quiet Ones
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
Cujo

Well that's not as bad as I thought it would be. The only thing on my list is Pet Semetary, and I can live without that.

Don't blame Netflix for those movies expiring. Blame the studios that want to sell you the DVDs of those movies as Halloween rolls around.

Also, get a DNS blocker. Guaranteed, those movies will be up somewhere in another neflix region.

Hey I'm gonna guess this has already been asked in the thread so I'm really sorry but has anyone compiled a list of horror movies to watch on netflix and amazon prime?

I could probably make a list. I made one last year. If I do, it would come Oct 1st. Since I would wait to see what stuff is taken down.

Edit - This would be for Netflix.
