31 Days of Horror 5 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

I looked up Netflix and Amazon Prime, Netflix has 11 movies I'd watch that I haven't seen before and Prime has 1, at least Prime does have The Mist which I've seen before but liked a lot.

I've got 19 films lined up so far, all first-time watches. Hope I can fill out the schedule without relying too much on repeats.

By the way, there's a horror-specific streaming service from AMC called Shudder that's in public beta right now that could be really useful for a lot of people here. It has a 14-day free trial and is only going to be $4.99 if you continue to use it past that point. It's not the largest library out there, but it is very, very varied, with a good mix of the essentials, underdogs and movies you've never heard of from all over the world.

Thanks for this.

I've really been looking forward to this, and have been holding off on watching a few things for it. I've participated the last few years and really enjoyed it. The list so far isn't in order or complete (I never do that, too strict for me), but I hope to also fit in a few Halloween-related games (Dead Space, Costume Quest, and Until Dawn) on top.

I considered doing a Hellraiser run last year but never got around to it, so I'm tempted to do that this year, or maybe Children of the Corn since Netflix has most of the movies in both series. Some decent options this year, though it does get increasingly tougher since I've seen so many of the good ones already.

1 Area 51 (2015)
2 The Fly
3 Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
4 The Green Inferno
5 Sleepy Hollow
6 The Devil's Rejects
7 The House at the End of Time
8 Carrie (2013)
9 The Host
10 Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
11 Stephen Kings Children of the Corn
12 Grabbers
13 Dead Snow: Red vs Dead
14 Ejecta
15 A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
16 Monsters: Dark Continent
17 Nosferatu: Original Version
18 The Phoenix Project
19 Rubber
20 Tusk
21 The Woman in Black
22 The Battery
23 The Monster Squad
24 Bloody April Fools

Best time of the year, best thread of the year.

Having done non-English language movies last October, this time round I'm going for a Best of British theme. I probably won't be sticking to it religiously though, as I also want to check out some of the Wes Craven films I haven't seen, in honour of the great man. Definitely doing the mandatory movies too, and I'm glad I haven't watched either of them before.

Very bloody excited.

Oct 30 - Horns
Oct 31 - The Skull

My list from 2014

Oh yeah, Excision is also a great movie that's been pretty popular in previous threads, so I'll throw that on the recommendation pile.

A fantastic thread, and I hope to actually fit more than 13 films in this year. Feel like every October I strive for a full 31, but lose steam a week or so in. A few recent horror releases that I recommend for this season..

Spring - Available on Amazon Prime Video. A super slick, very genuine romance with a supernatural element. H.P Lovecraft by way of Richard Linklater.

Unfriended - Yes, the horror movie that takes almost entirely through a Skype conversation. It's not perfect, but the premise is surprisingly well executed. A fun curiosity.

The Gift - More thriller than horror, but one of the year's best films. Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall give amazing preformances, with Joel Edgerton's commanding directorial debut.

Thanks.

After having finally seen 'Kill List' for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I can recommend it to those who want to fill a gap in their line-up. It's good.

Ah yes my favourite time of the year, besides Christmas, last year I think I got up to 17 movies, and several episodes of the 80's Munsters show. Which was an improvement over the previous year.

This year I will participate but I think my tally will be way lower as I have less free time., however I do have the 30th of October already booked off as well as Halloween itself being on a Saturday, allowing time for a good few movies there

I guess on the same note, also check to see if you get the Chiller channel, which is more horror-focused and October should be their month to shine....

Though still don't air in HD in New York, which is weird

love these threads - need to compile a new list this year. it's getting harder and harder as i'm running out of horror movies that interest me and are accessible.

during the rest of the year i avoid watching any horror flicks saving them specifically for Oct. :D

Woop! Taking part this year, although the list is going to be a scattershot whatever I can find. Will update with a list in a bit.

I missed doing this last year but will try my luck this year with a mixture of modern and also classic horror movies. Will try my best to do all 31 movies.

The pseudosequel series to Masters of Horror, 'Fear Itself' isn't horrible. Not good either, but if you're desperate for something to watch, which many of us probably are. My guess is that the stories had to be dumbed down drastically due to being on network television.

EDIT: There's also Nightmares & Dreamscapes, but yeah, same bit.

Not sure if I'll get to 31 movies but I'm going to a 24 hr horror movie marathon next month so I'll get plenty of 35mm horror in no doubt about that. There are a couple of Blu-Rays I've held off on watching until Oct rolls around too. My problem is I always slack off and forget to post in these threads every year.

Yay! Time to make up a list.
I always feel like I've seen a ton of horror films but there are still more that I need to see.
Should be easy to round out the 31. :)

I've never taken part in this, but think I will this year. I adore horror, but at the same time, I am a massive baby and get scared easily, so maybe this will help expose me to stuff I haven't seen and get over my fears haha.

I'm coincidentally going to be watching The Cabinet of Dr. Calegari in my Film Theory class tomorrow, so looking forward to that.

If anyone has any recommendations for films, I would love to hear them - loved Babadook, have yet to see It Follows, and slashers are probably my favorite sub-genre within horror although I tend to like anything that isn't just straight up torture porn.

Borrowing Divius' format, I hope they don't mind. Click pictures to go to individual posts with comments/thoughts/concerns on each film. Italicized titles are rewatches.

If you like The Babadook: Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby, maybe Possession (1981). Also Mario Bava's Black Sabbath, as a clip from that is used in The Babadook, even though the film doesn't really have anything in common with The Babadook (it's still a great horror anthology though).

If you like slashers: Look into the giallo subgenre, which was a major influence on the pop slashers of the 70s/80s. The most notable entries are probably Bava's Blood and Black Lace and Argento's Deep Red and Tenebre. The big name giallo directors' supernatural films are worth checking out too - Bava's Black Sunday and Black Sabbath, for instance, and Argento's Suspiria, Inferno, and Phenomena. Also, you may have already seen it, but Black Christmas is generally considered the first true modern "slasher" as we know them today, as it came out a full four years before Halloween. It's definitely an underrated classic.

I was worried I would have a hard time filling out my list, been watching a shitload of horror on Netflix lately but I looked at my queue and it nearly filled the list. I'm doing a couple horror marathons with friends so I want to wait and see what they suggest.

Here's my tentative list. It's thrown together quickly because I've been suffering from a pretty nasty cold (it's a miracle I got the thread up in the shape it is, but there's still things I'd like to fix) but I think I got everything I wanted to watch this year down. All are first time viewings, to the best of my knowledge.

Last year I planned everything out to the day and watched movies in mostly chronological order of release. This year I'm going to keep it more loose so I can join in the conversation if any of these movies proves to be a popular pick this year. It kind of sucked saving all the newer stuff for the end since they had already been talked about by the time I got to them.

I'll finally be finishing up the Hellraiser series which I started watching during the first year of the marathon. It's been an interesting ride. I'll be starting the shorter Phantasm series to take its place.

I've included a couple of substitutes as well, just in case anything goes wrong with my planned movies. If all goes well the substitutes will be saved for next year.

Hoping to go for 5 years in a row completing the marathon. This years theme for me is going to be Giallo. I expect it to be my toughest so far because some of those films are really freaking hard to find anywhere on the Internet.

I'd love to do a whole giallo month, but finding gialli that fit more into horror than just thrillers proved too difficult :(

I'll finally be finishing up the Hellraiser series which I started watching during the first year of the marathon. It's been an interesting ride. I'll be starting the shorter Phantasm series to take its place.

Looks like we will be sharing a couple of films like Black Sabbath and probably a few more. So far, Bava is 2 for 2 with me. I'm looking forward to seeing how the trainwreck known as Hellraiser Revelations goes for you. I've steered myself clear of the majority of Hellraiser sequels but I've enjoyed your reviews over the years. Will this be your first viewing of Phantasm? I have an odd compassion for the series.

I haven't started working on a list yet. I know I want to overdose on Hammer, but beyond Horror of Dracula and the four movies in the Horror Classics Blur-Ray box, I'm not sure what else I'll add. I have some time to figure it out. Or maybe I'll just roll without a solid list, but avoid flicks I've watched in the past.

Would it be possible to work out a group watch date/time for the mandatory films? It might be easier for people to discuss if they're viewed at similar times.

I would be interested in that.

Also, great pick with Caligari Thirstyfly. I actually meant to recommend it for one of the mandatory watches a few weeks back but I never got around to it. Great minds think alike!

Crap! I forgot I wanted to watch Bride of Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein this year and didn't include them in my list.

Anyone have any opinions on what 2 movies I can safely take out of my list? It's all stuff I've been saving/looking forward to, so I'm drawing a blank here.

Off the top of my head, I don't think I've seen any Bava other than the amazing Blood and Black Lace, so I'm really looking forward to digging deeper into his filmography. I also have 5 Dolls for an August Moon, The Girl Who Knew Too Much and Danger: Diabolik lined up, but they're not suitable for this marathon.

I've been dreading finally getting up to Hellraiser: Revelations. I've found something to enjoy out of all the other sequels though even if the level of quality is all over the place, so I'm trying to go in to Revelations with an open mind. At the very least, it should be interesting to see how it compares to the other sequels.

And yup, first viewing of Phantasm. I've seen bits and pieces of one of them (most likely #2) as a kid, but I don't remember much outside of some corpses in a morgue and the silver ball. I'll probably do 2-3 next year, then 4-5 the year after (if 5 ever gets released...).

Would it be possible to work out a group watch date/time for the mandatory films? It might be easier for people to discuss if they're viewed at similar times.

A time would be tricky but I plan to watch Caligari on the 1st and Creep on the 16th. Hopefully everyone watches them around there so we're all discussing at the same time, but I want to keep everything as flexible as possible, so I'd rather not force it.

Also, great pick with Caligari Thirstyfly. I actually meant to recommend it for one of the mandatory watches a few weeks back but I never got around to it. Great minds think alike!

We've been kicking around Caligari as a mandatory for a while now so I'm glad to finally get to it. Now for next year's public domain movie? That's gonna be tricky.

Unfortunately I can't remember who initially suggested it so I could credit them in the OP but it probably goes back to the first or second year of the marathon.

Honestly I have no time right now but I'm going to try this. It'll be inspiring. Plus I love rewatching oldies.

1. Jeepers Creepers
2. Hellraiser IV (space shit)
3. Creep
4. The Ring II
5. Street Trash (yearly watch anyway)

6-31 coming.

Heeeey ThirstyFly, you have Zombeavers on your list! I loved that stupid movie. And I hope you enjoy Until Dawn. I can't honestly imagine many horror fans who wouldn't.

I'm not going to have near enough time to participate this year, but I'll join the chatter, and benefit vicariously from others' reviews and recommendations.

Damn. I like all the movies on your list that I've seen, so I can't really choose any to remove.

I haven't seen a ton of Bava, but I really enjoyed Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, Kill, Baby, Kill, and of course Blood and Black Lace. The Girl Who Knew Too Much is mostly just worth watching as a novelty since it's generally considered the first giallo, even though it doesn't really feature a lot of the elements that would come to define the genre. For that reason I would call Blood and Black Lace the first true giallo unless there's one I don't know about. Anyway, I definitely plan on watching a few more Bava flicks this year.

There's always Nosferatu. And Vampyr, a personal favorite of mine. Or maybe Häxan?

I was really excited to see it when I first saw the trailer, but then I just never got around to it when it finally got released, so yeah, now's its chance.

Damn. I like all the movies on your list that I've seen, so I can't really choose any to remove.

Yeah, they all seem fun in one way or another. I had a lot to choose from this year so there isn't really any fat to trim. Anything that gets removed to make room for the two Frankenstein movies is gonna hurt.

I'm mostly just interested in The Girl Who Knew Too Much for that reason, that it's the first giallo. But yeah, the template that Argento and others followed is totally from Blood and Black Lace. I'll take a look at Kill, Baby, Kill and Black Sunday as well. Looks like I'll be starting next year's list way early since I have so much left over from this year...

There's always Nosferatu. And Vampyr, a personal favorite of mine. Or maybe Häxan?

I was considering Nosferatu, but I'd rather not do two silent movies in a row. I'm not familiar with Vampyr or Haxan, are they silent as well?

There's always Night of the Living Dead for when our backs are really up against the wall, but I can't imagine there's many people who haven't seen it yet.

Well, got an early start :p

Watched the following over the last 3 days

The Visit
The Strangers
Joyride

I've been adding a lot of movies to my Blu ray collection, I can't wait for October :)

It isn't that easy/cheap to track down physically but I watched Let's Scare Jessica To Death earlier this year and absolutely loved it. That's definitely worth a try for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Haxan is silent, yes. Vampyr is technically a talkie, but the dialogue is very sparse because Dreyer originally wanted to make it a silent film. It's still one of the most atmospheric horror films I've ever seen, though I don't know if its surreal dreamlike atmosphere would be for everybody.

Hmm... What about Carnival of Souls?

Yeah, it's actually a pretty decent and atmospheric movie. Far better than its unfortunate title would suggest.

Here's my list for the month!
I'll probably watch a few to cut it down to 31 for October.
If anyone takes a look, could you let me know if there is anything they think I should take off/add/replace? I haven't seen any of the things on the list before.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll make note of all of them and next year I think we'll leave it open for a bit of discussion or a vote before we start on the first.

Man, that's a damn good list. You're in for a hell of a month.

If you're not in a rush to watch Nosferatu or Vampyr, I'd take those out. I'm sure we'll use them for a mandatory movie eventually. Same goes for Night of the Living Dead, but since you're watching the whole trilogy there, may as well leave it in.

I'd personally trim down some of the Universal Monster movies. That's a lot for one month. Out what I've seen, Dracula honestly isn't very good outside of Lugosi's performance and the Mummy is pretty bland as well. Its story is very similar to Dracula so I'd go with one or the other (or neither, but that's just me).

This isn't a popular opinion, but I didn't like Eraserhead at all. It's just weird, but not all that interesting.

If you have access to it and can squeeze it in, you might want to add in Tenebre since you're watching Deep Red and Suspiria. IMO it's Argento's best.

The Dracula on his list is actually the Spanish language version, not Lugosi's.

Excellent list. That appears to be the Spanish Dracula? I've heard a lot of interesting things about that but I haven't seen it myself. I may have to see if I can squeeze it in next month.
