31 Days of Horror 5 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

I'm blown away that these are going to be first time watches. As Obi-Wan put it, you've taken your first step into a larger world.
Yeah, it's kinda funny. As much as I love Horror, there are a ton of classic Horror films that I've never seen. I tend to take in my Horror through other mediums: comics, games, and literature, and when I do watch Horror films, a lot of them are either relatively new or Japanese. I'm trying to educate myself on the classics, so if there are any that you all view as "must-see" films for Horror buffs, please do recommend them!

Going to try for this month! My life is like ultra mega busy so if I see 5 I'll be happy. But hopefully talking about horror movies will make me try to make more time for them! :)

I'm definitely in again this year! :D
I've got a whole bunch of new horror movies I've been saving up in anticipation, haha. :)

I do the same thing. Since I watch (or try to watch) 31 movies, by the end of the month, I'm usually burned out on horror movies to the point that I don't watch any for the next few months. Then I start to "save" some for the next marathon. It is a weird cycle.

I am, of course, unreservedly "IN" for the full 31 Days marathon! Looking forward to the mandatory films this year (so glad you decided to stick with Caligary, ThirstyFly!). I'm toying with the idea of doing a series of three or four films from some of my fave directors this year, largely because I pulled four Wes Craven films from my shelf I'd like to watch in memorium (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Swamp Thing, Cursed and Scream), but I'll stew on it a bit...

And here are my viewed lists from the first four years (for my own reference if nothing else)...

So as of now, I have two options open to me:
1. I continue to compile my list of 31 and hope I can match last years (I'll need some recommendations on my theme of "Evil Kids/Demonic Possession")

2. As my friends suggested - watch the first season (or first 31 episodes whichever works out better for this) of Are You Afraid of the Dark. I never saw the show as a kid, and Youtube has episodes, so I'm set there.

Am leaning towards AYAotD at the moment

TV series don't really count for this as we're doing a movie marathon, unless you want to count them as "extra credit" along with movies.

Then I am going to need suggestions on movies for Evil kids/Possession.
Will save this space to post my list later since it's small and will have a few of the films I didn't get to last year.
Maybe do AYAotD as a palate cleanser after each movie.

Cooties has just hit VOD in the us that's evil kids

I'm going to join on this for the year.
Been lurking around the thread for the past couple of years, and it looks like some serious fun.

Will work on the list over the weekend but I better get busy researching IMDB.

My girlfriend and I are going all in this year. I had a blast last year, and this year will be her first. I think she's more excited than I am. When I told her the goal was to watch 31 movies in a month she told me she thought we could watch at least 60. We will leave our shared thoughts here at the end. Have fun, everyone!

Evil kid movies:

Village of the Damned (1960)
The Omen (1976)
The Good Son
Wake Wood
Orphan
The Brood
The Children (2008)
Who Can Kill a Child?
Eden Lake

I think I watched 30 horror movies last October, which isn't too shabby. I don't think I'll hit that amount this year, but I still have some stuff I'm excited for:

The Creature from the Black Lagoon
The Mummy (1932)
House of Wax (1953)
Dead of Night
The Body Snatcher
Werewolf of London
From Beyond
Revenge of Frankenstein
Dracula: Prince of Darkness
The Fog
It Follows
Demons
Night of the Demons
Invasion of the Saucer Men
Dr. Terror's House of Horrors
Spookies
The Innocents

Plus some rewatches and a few animated movies (Monster House, Hotel Transylvania, Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit).

I was originally going to compile a list but at the same time I don't want this to feel like a project. I'm just going to randomly pick my movies per day based on my mood. I do have a few digital realeses that are out/coming soon I'm definitely keeping my eye on.

Cooties
Hellions
Contracted 2
Goodnight Mommy
The Final Girls

These are all the blu rays I have...

Alien
A Bay Of Blood
The Beyond
The Bird With The Crystal Plumage
Black Christmas
Candyman
The Cat o'Nine Tails
Chronos
City Of The Living Dead
A Clockwork Orange
Deadly Blessing
Deep Red
The Devil's Backbone
Don't Torture A Duckling (DVD)
The Exorcist
The Fly
The Fog
From Dusk Till Dawn
Halloween
Halloween 2
Halloween 3
Hellraiser
The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
The House By The Cemetery
In The Mouth Of Madness
Inferno
The Last House On The Left (1972)
A Lizard In Woman's Skin
Lord Of Illusions
Misery
The New York Ripper
Nightmare On Elm Street Collection (1-7)

Santa Sangre
Scream
The Shining
Shocker
The Silence Of The Lambs
Sleepless
The Terminator
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1977)
They Live
The Thing
Zombie (1979)

And these on preorder (which should come in the next couple weeks hopefully)

We Are Still Here
The Black Cat (1980)
Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key
Blood And Black Lace

I'm going to have a hard time choosing 31 and adding in new movies (like The Editor and Crimson Peak) as well.

I really need to give that a rewatch one of these days. I always thought it was pretty nonsensical, even by Fulci standards, but man, those gore effects...

It is nonsensical on purpose. Those movies are movies based purely on theme and horrific imagery. It was a rough watch at first but I like it more and more every time I see it.

I look forward to this every year and then inevitably give up after a week.

I noticed this new horror anthology comes out soon, trailer looks fun, like Trick r' Treat.

31 evil kids movies is a tall order. What have you seen and/or already picked out?

My personal favourite of the sub-genre is Who Can Kill a Child? (aka ¿Quién puede matar a un niño?) (1976)

rec_WhoCanKill_02_zpsc06bb2b5.jpg

It's very haunting and one of those movies that'll stick with you for a few days.
It was remade as Come Out and Play in 2012, though I haven't heard good things about that so I've never given it a watch.

The Children (2008) is another personal fave as well as Bloody Birthday (1981)

Troma has another movie called The Children (1980) and Beware: Children at Play! for free on their Youtube channel. I haven't seen either and I wouldn't expect much considering they're Troma, but if you're looking to fill out your list...

More recently, this is probably a big spoiler just saying it is one, but
Sinister
was good if you haven't seen it yet.

Off the top of my head there's also:
- The Omen series
- The Children of the Corn series
- Pet Sematary
- It's Alive trilogy (It's Alive, It Lives Again, It's Alive III: Island of the Alive)
- The Ring series
- Orphan
- The Brood

I suppose if you want to get creative you could also include the Basket Case trilogy or Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror which is a zombie movie but has perhaps the creepiest "kid" ever put on film.

#27 - E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà AKA The Beyond
This 80s Fulci is just awesome and I had a blast watching it. The plot may not always necessarily make sense and the weird dub is somewhat off-putting at times, but it has fantastic gore, great atmosphere and a superb ending. I am not all too familiar with Fulci, but I think next year I might be asking for recommendations from his filmography.. 8/10

My favorite movie of his is Don't Torture A Duckling. The Psychic and Lizard In Woman's Skin is amazingly underrated as well. City of the Living Dead, House By The Cemetery, New York Ripper, and Zombie (as well as The Beyond) are all thematically filled with horrific imagery along with his signature cinematography.

Here Comes The Devil
We Are What We Are (2013)
Benny's Video
Wishing Stairs
A Tale Of Two Sisters
Case 39
The Girl Next Door
The Other (1972)
The Good Son
Let The Right One In
The Exorcist

I think I might have just had enough recommendations to fill my list since so far the only ones posted I haven't seen and am aiming for are Who Can Kill a Child (as i try to stay away from films Ive seen before). The rest will be added to the list.
Thanks :)

Day of the Dead is great. I love how bleak it is. Keep it in.

In my opinion Day of the Dead holds up far better than the OG Dawn. I'm a big fan of Day. Highly underrated.

Worth watching for sure. Don't swap it. Bub and Frankenstein make it worth watching by themselves (as the pinnacle of Romero's allegory)

putting together some movies i have but haven't watched yet for this, so is the devil's advocate a horror movie? al pacino is the devil, right, so i guess it sort of has to be?

Rhodes is my fave character in that one. He's a fantastic villian.

And the movie features some of, if not the best Savini gore effects.

I really enjoyed getting exposed to new stuff last year. My schedule is terrible in October but I'm in for what I can.

Last year's list
15. Day of the Dead(Hulu). Bun was okay but didn't care for this. Watched the Battery again to wash the taste out.

1. Aaah! Zombies!! (Hulu) decent
2. Candyman (Crackle) good
3. Silent Night, Zombie Night (Hulu) forgettable, not worth your time
4. White Zombie (Hulu) didn't get into it
5. The Blob (1958) (Hulu) good
6. Carrie (2013) (Amazon) bad
7. Student Bodies (Amazon) bad
8. The Battery (Hulu) great
9. Phantoms (Amazon) surprisingly good, Ben Affleck is the bomb in it
10. Stalled (Amazon) great
11. Night of the Demons (blu) decent
12. Ghostbusters (Vudu) perfect
13. Scream (Vudu) classic
14. Monster Squad (Theater) I want a sequel
15. Day of the Dead (Hulu) bleh

I'll give it a shot. I'm not great at sticking to a scheduled list so I'll keep the choices for each day random.

There is one thing though: I'll watch Hocus Pocus on September 30th because that movie must be included.

I'll try and participate this time. I'm in a horror movie kinda mood and might as well wait till october to binge watch some crappy/good movies.

so far, from people's recommendations, I'll give those a shot:

The Beyond (have yet to watch a Fulci movie)
Rogue (never found crocodiles scary, but eh why not)
Cooties (if I can find it)

things I've been looking forward to watch for years:

The Visitor (1978)
Feeding Frenzy (RLM goodness :D)
The Video Dead (looks like hilarious crap, zombies coming out of a tv and it's an 80s movie, oh my!)

if anybody could help me find a rather unknown 80s (maybe 70s) horror of a crazy harlequin guy, I've been looking for that one all my life!

So I guess I'm going to take What We Do in the Shadows off my list to make room for The Bride of Frankenstein, unless anyone really wants to plead its case.

31 movies seems like a lot until you try to swap something out after already trimming it down :(

Yeah, sadly that doesn't look like it's going to be released any time soon, if at all. There hasn't been an update on its situation since July, and that was just that it "hasn’t been resolved".

I really want it too, but I don't really want to deal with the hassle/prices of importing.

All I can say is that I was pleasantly surprised by What We Do in the Shadows. Very creative and fun to watch all the way through.

All I can say is that I was pleasantly surprised by What We Do in the Shadows. Very creative and fun to watch all the way through.

My main concern is that it might be too comedy, not enough horror. I'll watch it eventually either way, but if something has to go that's the first movie that came to my mind.

I'm sure I could ditch some of the sure to be awful slashers in my list, but I want a little bad mixed in with the good. It makes talking about so many movies a little more fun.

Quite a few classic horror films I've never seen, so I'm thinking about giving them a go next month. I'll be happy if I can manage 5-10:

Rosemary's Baby
Dario Argento films (any of them)
The Last House on the Left (in memory of Wes Craven)
The Fog (don't think I've ever seen this all the way through)
Possession
The Shining (not seen this in years)
The Changeling

And I'll keep an eye out for other recommendations made here. Not too up to speed on Japanese or Korean horror at the moment, so I'll keep my eyes out for anything from those genres.
