31 Days of Horror 5 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

I never knew there was a thread for this! I do a 31 day movie marathon every year, happy to see there are other similarly insane horror fans. Still working on my list, but I'll have to post it when I'm finished.

Return of the Living Dead is my favorite movie of all time. I highly recommend it. The whole thing is available on YouTube btw.

I can't express enough how great the film is!

In my opinion Day of the Dead holds up far better than the OG Dawn. I'm a big fan of Day. Highly underrated.

Day of the Dead is a fun one. Love the atmosphere.

Not related, but I would also recommend Frozen (2010) as an example of a modern horror movie with characters that are done right.

I'm trying to get my list together now. There's a ton of classics I haven't seen myself, like the Shining.

My main concern is that it might be too comedy, not enough horror. I'll watch it eventually either way, but if something has to go that's the first movie that came to my mind.

I'm sure I could ditch some of the sure to be awful slashers in my list, but I want a little bad mixed in with the good. It makes talking about so many movies a little more fun.

There's really only one scene in the film that I would say that could be described as being much heavier on the horror than the comedy, but it is definitely a mockumentary first and foremost. You should absolutely watch it, though!

I'd be hard pressed to classify What We Do in the Shadows as horror movie or even horror comedy. It is an observational comedy about vampires, all the horror-ish moments in the film are derived from that point of view, even the most graphic parts. Mockcumentary and vampires have been overused in the media the past few years but the film does blend them together to make an pretty damn funny experience, it's not the my favorite comedy I've seen this year but I can picture it being one I most watch in the future.

I wouldn't call What We Do in the Shadows horror either. It's definitely more comedy with horror themes.
Compared to something like Shaun of the Dead or Cabin in the Woods, which ARE comedies and are pretty fun but also are pretty decent horror movies in their own right, WWDITS doesn't really reach those same horror heights.

Any movies that have a great Halloween theme like Trick r treat?

It's weird how there's so few good horror movies that are actually based around Halloween.

I'm assuming you've seen Halloween III: Season of the Witch?

Noted. Thanks for the opinions, guys. Shadows is out, Bride of Frankenstein is in. I'll save Shadows for a cool down viewing along with Young Frankenstein when I've recovered from the marathon and am ready to watch normal movies again.

As others have already mentioned, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is definitely a great choice! :D
If you don't mind low-budget stuff, Satan's Little Helper could be worth a watch too.

There are a few other Halloween-themed movies that I really like/recommend, but keep in mind they're not really horror movies:
-Hocus Pocus
-Ernest Scared Stupid
-The Nightmare Before Christmas
-Fun Size

I usually try to re-watch most/all of these movies (apart from Fun Size, which I hadn't seen until recently) after watching 31 new horror movies each October. :)

The Video Dead is really mediocre, now if your watching it via the Scream Factory release you get Terrorvision which is a wickedly funny, over the top 80's horror film as well.

Yeah, I got that Blu-Ray combo last year and couldn't agree more - The Video Dead was a disappointment but Terrorvision was great!

So I guess I'm going to take What We Do in the Shadows off my list to make room for The Bride of Frankenstein, unless anyone really wants to plead its case.

Since it has been removed from your list you should go ahead and watch it before October. There are a lot of good laughs, especially for horror fans.

I really want it too, but I don't really want to deal with the hassle/prices of importing.

I was lucky to grab it during a sale from Arrow's UK site, unfortunately the sale has ended. Hopefully the issues on it's American release get resolved eventually, I remember the old dvd release being abysmal, and the blu ray gives the film the treatment it deserves.

I really want to do my list, but am afraid of being ostracized because it's not a "real" Halloween list.

For instance, Cake would be on it.

So, I'm definitely considering participating in this challenge/movie marathon. I've already been scraping this thread, last year's thread as well as top 100 horror movie lists to get some ideas.

Somewhere down the line I've become a bit of a horror fan (mostly horror games, but movies as well). And as chance would have it. My girlfriend really enjoys horror movies too. For the past year and a half we have been plunging ourselves through a whole lot of, mostly mediocre, (semi-)recent horror films.

For a while now I've been considering taking on some older horror films. As I'm ashamed to admit that I've seen very few of the classics in the genre. I've never watched The Excorsist, The Evil Dead, Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm-Street, Poltergeist, The Omen or Rosemay's Baby, to name but a few. I hope to rectify this in the coming month. Though I must admit that I do fear that the age of these films may hamper my enjoyment somewhat. Especially films older than the 80s.

For now my general strategy will be a blend between relatively new films (post- 2000) and older classics (pre-1990). I highly doubt that I will be able to hit 31 movies, as I don't see myself watching a movie every night over the course of an entire month. But perhaps the weekends can get me close to the goal of 31 movies.

I'm still building my list, but films that I'm considering right now are:

1990 or older
1. The Thing (1982)
2. Halloween (1978)
3. The Shining (1980)
4. Videodrome (1983)
5. Tremors (1990)
6. Poltergeist (1982)
7. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
8. A Nightmare On Elm-Street (1984)
9. The Fly (1986)
10. Re-Animator (1985)
11. The Evil Dead (1981)
12. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
13. The Excorcist (1973)
14. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
15. The Beyond (1981)

Post 2000
1. Drag Me To Hell (2009)
2. A Girl Walk Home Alone At Night (2014)
3. Oculus (2013)
4. The Loved Ones (2012)
5. The Orphanage (2007)
6. Spring (2015)
7. We Are What We Are (2013
8. Tucker & Dale vs Evil (2011)
9. The House of The Devil (2009)
10. Wolfcreek (2005)
11. [REC] (2007)

You've got a solid list there. Tucker and Dale is a good one. And since Evil Dead is on the list, you might as well watch Evil Dead 2 also -- which I think is a stronger movie. It's also more of a remake than a sequel anyway. And since you have Night of the Living Dead, I would strongly recommend following that up with Return of the Living Dead. That movie works as a spiritual sequel and makes pretty awesome references to it.

Drag me to hell is also not too good a movie tbh. Which is a let down because Evil Dead franchise is so good.

I would like to do 31 movies, but the reality is that I'll probably only be able to make 10.
Regardless, if I see a movie, I'll post me thoughts of it here.

Thanks for the tips! I'll take both Evil Dead 2 and Night of the Living Dead into consideration and maybe I'll drop Drag Me To Hell for now. Finding some decent "recent' horror movies to balance out the list is proving to be hard though. I'm not a fan of torture horror, which I feel has been dominating a good chunk of the horror scene in recent years.

For post-2000 films I'd recommend:
-Let The Right One In
-The Descent
-Pontypool
-Ils
-Bug
-House of the Devil

Hopefully subtitles aren't a problem.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've already watched Let The Right One in, The Descent and Bug. Though I must admit to not watching Bug in its entirety. Might return to that one at one point. I'll make not of the others though. :)

I don't normally get spooked by horror movies but this one got to me. The claustrophobic setting, the jump scares and constant on-edge feeling it gives you, etc. just caught me off guard. Great movie. Saw it again later on on Netflix or something and it obviously wasn't nearly as bad the second time around when I wasn't in a theater and knew what to expect. But yeah...damn...

I want to get some of Savini's best work in this year. Can anyone think of movies that rank up there with The Prowler and The Burning? Besides Friday the 13th and Dawn of the Dead, seen those way too many times.

Maniac - Probably has one of the best gags Savini ever did.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter - He raised the bar from what he did on the first one. Plus he really send Jason out with a show stopping death.

Day of the Dead - He went crazy with the zombie effects. Lots of amazing zombie gags that have been quoted countless times over the years.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - Great Leatherface mask. Lots of cool and fun effects.

Creepshow - Fun movie with lots of varied effects work. It's an EC comic brought to life, in large part thanks to Savini's effects work.

I have some recs that I don't see pop up all that often.

-Yellowbrickroad
-The Shrine
-Citadel
-Afflicted
-The Sacrament

I'm still building my list, but films that I'm considering right now are:
You should check out Sinister. My wife and were constantly searching for good horror flicks that stick with you in a bad/good way, and legit creep you out. Definitely one of the better ones from recent years.

Some great choices for Halloween movies here. I wasn't even aware he worked on TCM2. Haven't seen it in ages and I need to rewatch it. Thanks!

Yep, loved it when I watched it last year. Also liked the new Evil Dead and You're Next for more modern stuff.

I'm going heavy into Vincent Price and Hammer horror this year.

There are very few movies where I honestly could not tell you what happens in its story. The House by the Cemetery is one of them.

I know right, I really tried too. The gore is neat, but the movie was disappointing. I did like zombi.

Ok, finally got around to putting a bunch of movies in list form. All taken from Netflix cuz I'm lazy and don't feel like finding anything. Fortunately there's a lot there I haven't seen. Hell my queue was loaded with close to 30 by itself. Wasn't much to find a few more. Not really any particular order but I'll probably watch them in that order anyway.

1. Cabinet of Dr Calligari
2. +1
3. House at the end of Time
4. Leprechaun
5. Leprechaun 2
6. Leprechaun 3
7. Leprechaun 4 In Space
8. Leprechaun 5 In the Hood
9. Leprechaun 6 Back in the Hood
10. Leprechaun Origins
11. Monkey's Paw
12. Maniac
13. Deep in the Darkness
14. The Horde
15. From the Dark
16. Creep
17. The Pact
18. The Pact 2
19. The Invitation
20. ABC's of Death
21. ABC's of Death 2
22. Horns
23. Late Phases
24. Venom
25. Mercy
26. Let the Right One In
27. Night Breed
28. Dream House
29. Tooth & Nail
30. Exeter
31. Taking of Deborah Logan

Possible swap outs or extra credit:
The Damned
Beneath
The Dunwich Horror

I'm also having a couple horror movie days in October with friends that may either add to this or take some of the above away because I get burned out.... First day should be American Werewolf in London, Zombeavers, and Rubber with a possibility of Thankskilling if their in the mood for that much cheesey horror. Not sure on the second time we gather yet.

I know right, I really tried too. The gore is neat, but the movie was disappointing. I did like zombi.

I personally liked it a lot because it felt like it was in the perspective of a disturbed child coping with his trauma / abuse. Thematically it made sense to me, even though the plot didn't, perhaps deliberately.

With the amount of movies on my list I could just go ahead and start a week early... and go on a week longer... :D
I'm actually thinking of doing this. I already ended up watching Tremors last night. Maybe I keep myself occupied by playing a horror game instead (still intend to play Amnesia some time).

I love this thread every year because it gives me good ideas for horror movies I haven't seen yet.

however, that list seems to get smaller and smaller.

I'd love to watch as many movies that I haven't seen as possible. So if you guys can give me some lesser known stuff that would be cool. Re-watching things is nice and all but I'd love to be surpiresed too.

I haven't really seen much giallo other than Susperia so I might get into that this year.

Yeah, Bava and Argento's gialli are great. I'm particularly fond of Blood and Black Lace, Deep Red, and Tenebre. Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling is an underrated gem in the genre as well, it's got kind of a different feel from the usual fare. (I'm omitting these directors' supernatural horror films here as those aren't true gialli, despite having many of the trappings of the genre - but most of those are worth watching as well.)

Last 4 years I tried to focus on stuff I hadn't seen, but now running out of stuff I haven't seen and feel like I'm scraping bottom of the barrel in quality. Think this year I'm going to have alot more rewatches of classics. Can only handle so many movies of Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers level of quality.

I have about 77 movies on my want-to-watch list, plus every Hammer horror film I haven't seen, plus whatever other films from directors I like that I've forgotten about...so I don't think I'll have a problem finding stuff to watch. I will have a problem deciding which ones to watch, though. I'll probably just play it by ear and watch whatever happens to tickle my fancy on a given day.

Don't forget Lizard In Woman's Skin and 7 Notes In Black

Don't forget Lizard In Woman's Skin and 7 Notes In Black

Lizard in a Woman's Skin isn't even remotely close to being a horror movie though.

That's the problem with gialli and why I'm more selective when including them in this, most are just straight up suspense/thriller movies and have limited to no horror elements.

Yeah.. I mean you have a point, though
the dog scene is pretty horrifying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEpRevD3iRs

Heh, forgot about that part. Yeah, that's reaaally disgusting.

Good movie and worth watching, but I just don't think it's suitable for a horror marathon. I unknowingly included it in my viewing 2 years ago and consider it a wasted day.

Edit: There's a bunch of gialli I have sitting here waiting to be watched but I'm trying to be a little more pure with my selections when it comes to the marathon so if they're not horror enough I won't include them. Sorry Edwige Fenech, I'll get to you eventually~

Here is a list from a friend of mine who went through and complied ratings from the members (about 100 at the time) of IMDb's Horror Board from 2007-2011. 500 horror films. It's been my go to guide for the October Challenge over the years.

Top 500 Horror Films List

Holy shit! That's an awesome list. Thanks for sharing.

And tell your friend thanks for compiling it. That had to take some time.

Can anyone recommend some good monster films for me, just drawing up my list and need some decent monster films on the list

Some of the more popular ones off the top of my head.

Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
The Thing
The Blob
Tremors
An American Werewolf in London
The Howling
King Kong
Gremlins
Alien
Pumpkinhead
Basket Case
The Fly (Original and Remake)
The Wolf Man
The Creature From the Black Lagoon
The Mist
Gojira

I think it's unlikely that I'll find the time to watch 31 movies this October but I'll bee keeping an eye on this thread for horror movie ideas for the end of the month. Keep them coming, fellas!
