Coming from the PS4, I am blown away by the Xbox One.

The terrible UI was actually one of the reasons I decided to get FH3 and Gears 4 on PC.

Which means that to me, the UI is so bad it makes me not buy games for the Xbone.

But the actual UI functionality is legitimate trash. Settings is always in another separate channel, you can't check downloads without accessing another channel, it takes forever to access or load anything...

Aesthetically, yes, it's very nice. But it's far from effective.
Wrong.

When you download or install something, the progress bar shows up on the main page of the dashboard under the "my games and apps" tile

I'm sorry but I can only assume some kind of fanboyism when someone praises the Xbox One controller, especially over the DS4. I played Arkham Knight on Xbone and I couldn't wait to drop that piece of shit controller with unrealistically terrible shoulder buttons and never use it again. Thank god the DS4 can be used in PC, if I had to play more games using those RB/LB and d-pad I'd just use the DS3 instead. That's how godawful it is. I can't believe people actually believe it's good.

I have destiny running in background and am watching vudu. Despite this, I am not seeing 5 second lag. I'm not even seeing a one second lag save for loading after I snap PBS kids

Sorry for vertical recording.

This is pretty much me. Granted, I recently had my early 2014 Xbox One replaced with a new Xbox One (not S or Elite, just normal 500 GB) because of a severe power surge. But yeah, speed is identical on relatively slow 5 GHz Wi-Fi 30 Mbps connection.

Ah yes, all those millions of fanboys who dished out $40-150 on Xbox One controllers, even those people that don't even own an Xbox! Even with the bad pre-revision shoulder buttons, I far preferred the Xbox One over the 360 controller. DS4 is really good though, but constantly see people's sticks wearing off.

Your opinions on controllers are even worse than your opinions on the Dark Souls series.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. The Xbox One controller is, IMO, the absolute best controller ever made, whereas the DS4 feels cheep, the sticks are terrible, and I hate the share button with a passion. It was one of the main reasons I sold my PS4 and never looked back. I'm more than willing to forgo a few A+ exclusives if it means I never have to use that thing ever again.

So if you prefer the X1 controller over a DS4, then you are a fanboy?

Holy fuck...

Traded my PS4 in for an Xbox One around February and I prefer the Xbox UI over the PS4 as well. Download speeds over Wi-Fi are much better for me as well. The kicker for me is being able to store and run games off an external HDD. I filled up my 2TB PS4 and hated having to delete and reinstall games.

Can't ever agree here, Xbox One has the second best controller of all time, only bested of course by the glorious GameCube controller. While I like the DS4, the Xbox controller is on another level.

Oh for fucks sake...really!? The fact some prefer ones controller makes them a fanboy?

I think you posting such a thing is much more telling into who the real fanboy is.

R1 and L1 feel better to me than the Xbox but that is about it. The Elite controller is a fantastic controller and I move the RB and LB to the back. The DS4 for whatever reason gives me hand fatigue after a little bit and the battery life is god awful. Hopefully the new controller has a better battery.

The RB/LB was bad on the original but they revised it and now it's fine.

You are blown away just because of some UI?

You are too easy to please aren't you. It is not like smartphone or PC where UI does matter. You know, the point of console is to boot game.

That XONE controller though, is real good.

I feel like, if your Xbox One isn't moving as fast as the OS in that clip posted, something is wrong. Outside of cold boots, where it is obviously refreshing and downloading new content.. it's always been like that, except for the time when Comcast was getting funky with my internet, downgraded it to 30mbps for some dumb reason (from 180).

I think having your UI functionality depend on internet connectivity is probably one of the dumbest things there is.

Having the content on the tiles load in slower, i'd understand that. But it straight up being less responsive and laggy? Who came up with that brilliant idea?

Probably same guys who came up with that idea of cloud giving Xbone the power of many more Xbones.

The fuck, my 77ms means I'm closer to an Azure centre than you, but your dash is faster.
Maybe it has to do with download/upload speed, I only have 35/10.
Hmmmm...

I still use OG, what's wrong with those buttons?

They are more mushy on the original controller and they click in the revision. I think you can push on the sides and it works or something on the new controller but the older one you had to push more in the center or something (might be reversed positions).

No.

You are 100% without doubt in the minority on that one.

Someone living with their head in the clouds?

If you boot up both systems for the first time 99% of people would choose the ps4 ui. If you give the Xbox ui some time and really understand it it would be 50/50 in my opinion. It's really easy to get to what you want on the Xbox especially double clicking the Xbox button or just going to the left on the dashboard. Ps4 has a lot of extra steps to get to things but the advantage is the responsiveness. If they could just fix the lag on the Xbox dashboard it would be almost perfect. This is my opinion and I have spent a lot of time with both systems.

The UI is abysmal, the party and chat system is way worse than it was on 360, the store is a big list of items that is horrible to find what you want, everything being apps you have to open is abysmal and a step back.

It's a horrible mess of what Windows 8 was trying to be and where MS are trying to go now.

All of this

lol, different strokes i suppose.

the xbone gamepad is literally the pinnacle of gamepad design to me.

but MS has brought it hard with gamepads ever since the original sidewinder series on PC - always been a forté of theirs.

conversely, i've always found Sony's DS pads weird as fuck... but i've also never owned my own Playstation console [pro will change that though!], so i think it's largely influenced by "what you're used to".

mind you, i'm pretty sure the consensus is that most people find xbox gamepads as awesome as i do... no?

To be fair, both consoles have excellent controllers this time around. Last gen both had their issues. Unfortunately the DS4 has probably the worst battery in the history of batteries. No matter how bad you think it is, it's even worse than that.

But the same thing can be said about the Xbox UI. Just an absolute mess. 360 had a great one. It's like they all went to a lab and thought long and hard how to make it the exact opposite of the old one. Maybe it was made for Kinect and that's the issue, but it's still horrendous.

All of this

Yes it's all of this. But op seems to find it cool and better, so be it. What bothers me is the way OP wrote his post... it feels like this is something coming straight from a new hype-up-to-date marketing company that's trying to test their skills, or a computer following specific points and guidelines. Ha.
Which puts me off really hard. This impression is further backed by my very bad experience with the XboxUI (had like 3 hrs with it when visiting a friend, I was happy to come back to my PS4).

I guess it's like colors and tastes but still, that way of writing it...

EDIT : I just read it again for the sake of it and let's take this sentence :
"This leads to a greater level of engagement within the community" seriously man, what in the world? Unless you're a teacher somewhere who's preparing a PPT presentation, no one should bother to talk like this (this perfect) on a daily basis or when casually expressing their opinions.

You can set the XBO so it turns your television and sound system on and off when you turn it on/off.

Which would be fantastic if it actually worked for me. I've tried multiple codes for my TV model on the Xbox One, and the most it's able to do is have the Kinect control TV volume. Only power option that works for me is the toggle, but I don't find that particularly useful since if the TV is already on it'll go ahead and turn it off as the Xbox is booting up. Ends up being more of a hassle than a time saver.

On the other hand with HDMI-CEC, I can press the PS button on the DS4 and it powers on the PS4, TV, and also switches the TV to the correct input (not sure if the Xbox One does that when the feature is actually working). The only thing it doesn't do is shut off the TV when powering down the PS4, but that doesn't really matter to me since I have my TV auto-shutoff after 2 minutes of no activity.

I think the problem with both the Xbox implentation and HDMI-CEC is they're both incredibly finicky technologies. Based on your TV, you can have it work exactly as intended, not work at all, or anywhere in between. For my TV, HDMI-CEC works much better which makes the PS4 a lot more convenient to start up than the Xbox One.

So you're implying that the op is marketing/astroturfing? Cool, cool.

The UI is slow, which kind of ruins it for me. However, allowing you to feed your cable tv through it was a good idea. That alone means I turn it on pretty much every day. But, while I turn it on every day, I've only bought one game for it.

PC and PS4 are my main platforms due to the hardware advantage.

Heads up preview members, the latest update increases the speed or "snappiness" of the UI. At least at the main screen, launching/exiting apps, stepping out to home and the left menu/friends. Haven't had time to dive deeper but its noticeably quicker.

I got my Xbox One a few days ago and I share the OP's feelings on the dashboard and general user experience. I wasn't expecting it to be this slick in areas that matter to me, actually.

My favourite thing is the store experience. You load the page, then press A on "get" or "install". That's it. It's immediate and the console queues up the download in your games/apps list in the home menu. I was shocked at how quick and painless that is, and I appreciate how your download list isn't a download list, it's just a list of games or apps to install in your games list. Again, same principle, you press A on the icon, then install, and it's immediately added to the queue.

I'm so used to confirmation screens on PSN/eShop and these long wait times after tapping install before you can move on and do something else that this really shocked me. But it's how it should be. On an iPhone you always just tapped install and the task would immediately show up in downloads.

I like the main home screen and how it shows your last 5 or so tasks, making it easy to switch between them without the need for a multitasking screen. I also like how pins give you that grid of icons that you'd get on other platforms like the Wii U or PS Vita, and how the core settings are accessible from the left, similar to how the PS4 puts them at the top.

So yeah, I'm really impressed and it's exceeded my expectations. My only quibble is that sometimes you, as the user, can move faster than the Jaguar CPU can keep up. While the UI's framerate has remained a solid 60fps for me, I've noticed inputs can start to lag if you press B repeatedly to go back several levels at once, stuff like that.

Cloud saves are also done right, like Steam. It all feels seamless in that you load an old game (in this case it was a 360 title) and the system fetches your save, on boot, without even telling you. I appreciate that.

For me at least, the bar has been raised as to what I'm expecting from Nintendo's Switch.

I agree with statements that the PS4 Interface is more obvious to use at first, and I think the Switch should aim for something like that, but focus on speed where it matters, like in the store and switching between stuff you're using frequently. What's nice about the Xbox One interface is you can still use the system without needing to be an expert at things, but you gradually figure out functionality that you wouldn't have known at first, and a lot of the micromanagement is handled for you now. I like how Nintendo has championed the grid of icons approach to launching software first and foremost, hopefully that doesn't go away but is expanded upon.

Agreed. The ad complaint baffles me.

Same here. I actually find it less intrusive than the PS4 UI, which is always peddling contents and suggestions at every page:

Screenshots? Yup - buy button for game right beside screenshot.
Game hub? Yup - suggested games and downloadable content right beside the game-specific options. And there's a buy button for the game even though you've inserted the disc.
What's New? Yup - though this area is all about social so it feels at home here. It's also always been like this since the PS4 dash launched.

By contrast, what I've noticed about the One is it doesn't peddle content like this. The game hub has a small link to view the store page for the game, but otherwise it's all content relating to the game itself, not purchasable similar games or DLC. Likewise a screenshot for a game lets you view the game hub, but there's no peddling of content there.
