KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

Haines,
I tidied up the OP with some formatting if you want to quote this post and use it to make it easier on the eyes? :)

I've one change to the Full and Normal Black Levels as, unless I'm mistaken the most recent conversation about this was to set them at those levels.
Obviously change anything you feel is wrong or out of date.

For Gaming
Picture Mode:
Gaming
Picture Size:
16:9 Standard
Fit to screen:
On
Backlight:
5 – 10 depending on time of day and environment
Brightness:
45
Contrast:
100
Sharpness:
0
Colour:
50
Tint (G/R):
50/50
Smart LED:
Low / High (Some people do not like High due to seeing the screen dim during gameplay)
HDMI UHD Colour:
On for your desired input
HDMI Black Level:
Normal (Due to on going discussions over this, Normal seems to be the best option)
Colour Tone:
Warm1 / Warm2 (Xbox Calibration recommended Warm1 but can vary by preference)

Off (Can be used for looking at 720p content if you wish)
Auto Motion Plus:
Off

TV Sound
HDMI Audio Format:
Bitstream
Audio Format:
Dolby Digital (Your choice here might vary depending on your Audio set up)

Tips:
Do not forget to check in game brightness sliders for games with a new TV. I find default is the best for most of these.
Do not forget to change your settings for all modes, including when HDR kicks in on Netflix, etc
Turn ALL Eco Settings off
To turn the Samsung Logo Light off follow these instructions:
Settings > System > Expert Settings > Light Effect > Off
Turn Anynet off in System Settings if you don’t want TV to power on system hooked up
Make sure you update to the latest Firmware
Xbox One S Users Turn Colour Depth to 10bit
Do not use HDR+ Mode, this is just a fake HDR setting to simulate it, this is NOT how you enable HDR.
Using Game Mode for movies and TV is probably ok. Use at your discretion. Switching to Movie Mode makes sense to me because I swap between Warm1 and Warm2 for each type of media.
PSVR Processing Box will prevent HDR from working, its NOT compatible.
Use the proper HDMI Cables for HDR, AKA the one that comes with the PS4 Pro.
Smart LED set to Off / Low helps reduce with a backlit display. High will make the issues stand out more.
how are you not getting crushed blacks with 10 bit?

Must say I'm not 100% happy with this TV.

Feed it high quality content and it's superb. However it lets itself down with lower quality stuff. I'm based in the U.K. and the majority of my viewing is via Sky TV (satellite TV provider) and the low quality bitrate broadcasts, even HD ones, show up terrible posterization in the dark colours. I also get the same with my Xbox One.

4K content and blu-rays look amazing, however.

My only real gripe with this TV.

Welp. I bought this TV, but it was missing the one connect box. Now I have to go exchange the entire TV. >->

I tried some wiiu today and it looked soft. I had to add some sharpness to help clean it up. I tried 5 and I think it helped.

Thankfully my tv is netflix so I don't have that issue.

If it doesn't down what you want you should take it back.

Eh, I'd say you should be less happy with Sky and their shit signal quality then the TV.
I'm in the same boat, Have sky myself but its down to them to improve on their lackluster 1080i signal, which they have with the grossly overpriced Sky Q.

That's not the TV's fault, but you're right, it does expose how shitty cable tv looks. I imagine any 4K tv would do the same.

Is it possible to get 3.5mm headset working at all with the tv? Because the apps are 100% worthless at night without any form of headphones and call i can find is optical and it seems that a optical to 3.55 female for headphones just doesn't exist.

Are a cheap pair of Bluetooth headphones an option for you? The TV supports stereo Bluetooth headphones.

EDIT

Something like this could also be an option: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I59VBH4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

You could pair it to the TV and plug it in next to your seat and plug your headphones into it for audio.

I'm going to need to get a new surround system.

I'm former going into the tv and ps and switching between dolby and dts to figure out what is compatible for what I'm watching or playing.

I assume getting a decent surround sound would eliminate all this nonsense.

Right now I'm using a logitech pc system that did good for 10 years but time to retire the old girl.

I promise I'll update the OP when I get a few here. Been a hectic day.

The Z5500? If so, me too! Haven't checked to see what it's being fed - long as it's Dolby Digital or DTS I'm fine either way. Is your TV not choosing DTS when it has the option? Your PS4 won't do it either? The PS4 should make the choice - what's happening with the TV?

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO SUFFER FROM BLACK FLICKERING ON PS4 PRO!
I swapped ports from HDMI 1 to 4 AKA arc, still flickered.
I swapped hdmi cords from the stock cord to a nice one I got from monoprice a year (still on port 4) ago and THE PRO WORKS PERFECTLY! The paladins beta was an absolute shit show, so was the main Dashboard, and the last of us. It hasn't flickered since I swapped cables and boom, not an issue.

Thats exactly what i have.
Some stuff wants dts, others want dolby, and i get stuck going into the settings switching it around.
Im using an optical from tv to its mini reciever thing.

How do you have it setup and what are your settings?

I have sky q and a ks7000. I find setting output to 1080i gives a much better picture letting the TV do the upscaling instead of the box. Just switch it 2160p to watch uhd stuff. Also got a ps4 pro and wasn't overly impressed with hdr, then picked up a xbox one s on black friday with gears 4 and forza horizon 3 and the hdr seems much better. Especially because you can fine tune the hdr. Forza horizon 3 might be the best looking game I've ever seen and I own a 6700k sli 780ti pc.

Make sure you get a receiver that passes through hdr. I have a yamaha with 4K pass but it only passes 4k 60hz at 420 with no HDR. Simple enough to just use optical out from the TV, but if you want lossless audio this won't work obviously.

I will probably make a thread trying to figure out my best surround.sound option when I get some scratch in the new year and had time to do some research on my own

I have definitely noticed a lot of people having issues with recievers and hdr so that is top of my mind.

I don't even need something loud. Just something that sounds good.

Very interesting. After some tests, I learned that optical output is bugged, at least on my firmware (can't update til Monday), and presumably yours too. Every time I switch inputs, the TV forgets my settings, and knocks its output down to PCM. Very frustrating.

Let me know what you end up doing. I have zero interest in buying a receiver because I have sufficient ports on my TV, and these speakers are absolutely fine for my needs. I don't need 7.1 or lossless audio. If need be, I'll upgrade to a similar all-in-one setup to the Z5500 (perhaps one now exists with HDMI input?), but I imagine this problem will persist with any device linked to the optical out.

Anyone using a soundbar, or outputting audio from the TV via optical - are you dealing with the same problem? Anyone finding this is happening via the HDMI audio out if you switch between sources on the TV? I'm guessing most people will use a receiver and leave the TV on a single source input, so they'll never encounter the problem.

Maybe we'll get a firmware fix.

Yep mine knocks down to pcm.

Doesn't do dolby when clearly the movie can dolby. Etc.

It's frustrating.

So of people have a reciever do they plug consoles into it and reciever goes to tv?

Thanks for mentioning! Definitely impressed with episode one.

Had never watched Top Gear, thought it was pretty enjoyable. A lot of straight up car porn, which makes for some really good colors and cinematography, but they had a pretty decent sense of humor too. 2nd episode isn't hitting as well, but I'm gonna keep watching it.

Exactly - the receiver processes the sound instead of the TV, so you can send it to sexier speakers. Downside is that your receiver has to play nice with the HDR signal which currently just goes straight to your TV.

I'd imagine this optical thing is affecting everyone with soundbars though, so hopefully a fix is in the works. If not, and it's a Z5500 issue, then perhaps picking up the Z906 (essentially the new version of the exact same thing) will solve the problem.

You can go into the audio options on the TV and change the audio to bitstream instead of pcm.

I hope someone can help me breakdown and understand my audio options.

So I have a PS4 pro and this tv, but my surround sound system doesn't have 4k passthrough, so I changed my audio setup.

Right now I have all HDMI going directly to the TV, and then an optical cable going from the one connect box to my receiver.

On the PS4, I have the audio output set to bit stream dolby digital. Is this correct? In my games I seem to be getting 5.1 still.

The issue came from a blu ray I just started playing. I noticed I was only getting 2.1 On the TV, my audio output options only had PCM. I happened upon another settings menu on the ps4 while in blu ray playback, and I changed the audio output from PCM to bitstream and THEN I got 5.1 on the movie.

Is this all because PCM is technically the best option, but optical can only have 2 channels on it? I seem to remember reading that somewhere. Am I losing quality by doing bitstream?

I'm getting confused because I was just reading that bitstream is the raw data from the source, so I don't understand how that isn't 'the best/most uncompressed option.

These are my current picture settings on the KS8000, using content on my PS4 Pro for reference:

Picture Mode: Dynamic

Backlight: 20

Brightness: 58

Contrast: 90

Sharpness: 86 (I'm constantly tinkering with this as I don't notice much difference past a certain threshold)

Color: 60 (also something I'm tinkering with)

Tint: 50 (default)

Digital Clean View: Off (does this only affect movies/video?)

Auto Motion Plus: Custom (Blur Reduction: 0, Judder Reduction: 10, LED Clear Motion: 0) (I don't see this getting much use for games, but it works surprisingly well with World of Final Fantasy, perhaps because of the fixed camera angles. Also wondering if Auto Motion increases lag like the LG's Tru Motion did).

Smart LED: Off (wondering if it's worth keeping on?)

HDMI UHD Color: On on all ports

HDMI Black Level: Auto

Dynamic Contrast: High

Color Tone: Cool

Eco Solution: All Off

Would like suggestions on any changes, but keep in mind that vibrancy and color is my primary factor, and that I have no interest in Game Mode (perhaps down the line if I heavily get into a multiplayer game).

Do I need a sunglasses? Must be bright as the sun

For anyone else looking to bypass their receiver via optical, go from the pro to the receiver. Bitstream to Dolby or DTS (your preference). Personally I bitstream to DTS cause it gives my system more kick. I cannot really comment much on TV optical to receiver because I only use that for cable, which only does Dolby.

Mine is coming this week and I didn't realize it doesn't have analog audio out. That sucks.

yeah, same here (ks9000, but still). my soundbar doesn't accept optical. i had to order a gefen converter that will convert dolby digital to analog. just search on amazon for gefen converter or something like that. be careful, there are some cheaper ones that won't convert dolby digital or dts.

dude you're the one watching your tv, so you can set it up how you like, but i would never watch settings like that. While you're at it, might as well turn on hdr+ mode and change it back to store mode instead of home mode.

Personally I bitstream to DTS cause it gives my system more kick. I cannot really comment much on TV optical to receiver because I only use that for cable, which only does Dolby.

I have a 5.1 system. So you are saying I should use optical on the ps4 and go straight to the receiver instead of going HDMI to the tv, and then optical to the receiver (from the TV?).

I thought having video and audio seperated would create sync issues. Either way I can't do that, because my receiver only has one optical port. I also have DirecTV and an Xbox One

I'll be the fourth to say, yeah, this is exactly what I was seeing. If I even touch the black level setting, in any source conditions, Auto becomes Low. But left in Auto, if the PS4 boots up with RGB Full, Auto is fine as long as I don't touch it.

I guess my only question, what's the difference when you're viewing content that was originally formatted as 16-235 -- like movies and shows -- in a 0-255 "Full" output? If there's no discernible difference, then I think I'll leave PS4 set to Full and TV on Auto.

If I can interject if it hasn't been solved yet, but I imagine that the Auto setting functions as an "Automatic Handshake" when a source first talks to the TV when coming from a cold state, and isn't really smart enough somehow to look for any source changes while being in a hot state.

Does that make any sense?

What happens when you change the bitstream settings on the TV? Do you want Dolby or DTS? PCM via optical I believe can only handle stereo

if you want to use optical for all your sources (ps4, xb, direct tv) then i would use the optical from the TV into your receiver, but you would have to go into the sound settings on your tv and make some changes. Probably takes like 10 seconds.

My TV seems to be auto switching when needed. If i'm watching a shitting channel only broadcasting stereo, it switches to PCM (with the other options grey'd out). When I turn my PS4 or whatever on, it kicks over to dolby digital in the TV audio output settings.

Whole lot of criticisms about my settings being too bright.

Would be helpful if they mentioned what I should change. Contrast, I assume?

Also, keep in mind this is for a private room (let's say "medium lit") and not a huge living room with a ton of lights.

This is because the TV will only spit out what it's receiving. It is easier to do optical from your tv to receiver since it'll handle all your devices. So if you watch a shitty channel that only has stereo, that's the only thing it can tell the receiver to play. With PS4 and PS3(I only have these devices so I can only speak about these and their settings) you can tell it what to send out, with PS4 being a bit better IMO for sound options.

I think with your settings on Sun like, you lose details in some things, like with DC on high. But again this is completely up to you and how you like things. Depending on what I'm watching, majority of stuff has been set to Warm1 with the exception of some channels, because it makes the image look worse, to me. I used to be standard only and I go back to that for some channels/sports. However again, this is completely up to you and how you enjoy watching stuff, whatever floats your boat

Please turn your sharpness down to 0. Sharpness on an LCD is completely artificial, and looks super bad.
