See this arguing over medal tables is silly to me as the Olympics has always been about individual or sometimes team performances in their chosen field not a dick measuring exercise

Yeah, I don't get it. Maybe it's because Canada (my country) doesn't get that many medals... I get super excited over anything our athletes manage to accomplish. I really don't look at the totals and factor them into anything.

It's about the athletes not the countries, but oh well.

Better that either other system since Gold is obviously more important than silver or bronze while at the same time the other medals ARE NOT meaningless.

In the way it's done now, and the best way, the other medals aren't meaningless.

Silvers are used to place nations who are tied on Golds. Same with Bronze for Gold AND Silver ties.

I think the Egyptian has got this semi-final. A 5 point lead is damn hard to overcome in only a minute and a half.

EDIT: I may have spoken to soon.

ROFL.

They are far more meaningful that just tiebreakers :P

I would take a country with 8 golds 10 silvers over a country with just 9 golds 0 silvers any day.

Statistically speaking that's pretty unlikely anyway.

And? That's what you're saying is a better measurement. Is 6 bronze and 2 gold more likely? You know what I'm getting at no matter how much you want to change the subject. You can make more convoluted examples that are more likely with a team with a much higher amount of golds being equal to a team that is silver and bronze heavy.

If Silver and Bronze are used to rank countries just as much as Gold, then why stop there? Why is third place so much better than fourth? Because people decided to make a medal for it? Going by anything but Gold will be totally arbitrary.

A country with 9 bronze is just as successful as a country with 3 gold? I don't consider them equal at all. You might as well go by total medals then.

I think it fits. I mean sure, while the medals are gold, they only have 3 medals overall. You're comparing that to a country that was able to get 9 medals (even though they're bronze). Meaning there were able to place in the top 3 9 times in contrast to a country that was only able to do it 3 times.

I personally think

Gold 5
Silver 2
Copper 1

is better.

While we are at it, should also make team sport with more than 2 players a multiplier of # in team/2. So team gymnastic = x2.5, football = x5.5 etc.

Everything about the Olympics and sports is arbitrary. Not sure what you are getting at.

Don't forget to incorporate the # of golds : # of athletes ratio for each country! A country that sends 9 athletes and they all win gold is fuck awesome. A country that sends 500 athletes and 9 win gold is LOSER!!

That seems like weird logic when gold is MUCH harder to get than bronze. If that's so important then just go by overall medals since the item of them ranking anywhere seems to be most important.
