I don't enjoy hardware. Never have, likely never will. I think the gaming industry has this all backwards.
I'm enjoying playing Black Ops with pointer controls. I'm enjoying Miiverse (and eating crow about it). Miiverse has far surpassed my expectations of what it does.
The hardware? Well, I guess I wish it would be "future-proof" but then it'd be more expensive. The UI is nice and clean, except it's a bit slow. The initial update is not that big of a deal.

I didn't previously realize that the Wii U is using what amounts to a Blu-Ray drive without a license, not just a DVD drive.
What is Nintendo thinking? I don't see that it needs the capacity...the only real benefit (as proven by the PS3) would be the ability to play Blu-Ray movies, which it can't do. I'll bet the question "does this play Blu-Rays?" (or maybe DVDs) has been asked at stores across the country a million times by now. Another inexplicable Nintendo decision.

Mass Effect is on one disc instead of 2. That's the benefit. The issue here is that Nintendo are a bunch of cheap pricks and refuse to pay the license that would have allowed us to watch our movies on the Wii U. BOOOOOOO.
It's not really that inexplicable... they didn't have any interest in blu-ray/DVD playback (they never have), and there are already a handful of games on the system which exceed the capacity of dual layer DVDs. Clearly they thought it beneficial to ensure all games could fit on a single disc (and I would agree with this).
Who is arguing that right now?

Nice write up.
You won't be connecting cables to it. They've basically said that the software will pull program data from the Internet and will use the IR blaster in the GamePad to switch inputs and change the channel.

I've been playing on the gamepad exclusively ever since I got it, and while I do see your point, I've been able to adjust after playing the tracks over and over. Been able to get 1st place online multiple times. Love the comfort of the gamepad too.

Pretty anecdotal, but I just did a search of Walmarts within 50 miles of me and 8 out of 12 stores have the deluxe edition in stock and 13 out of 20 targets have the deluxe edition in stock. If this can't even sell out at launch, that makes me believe that this thing isn't in high demand or selling very well.

Ugh, I thought by now I would have enough solid user feedback to know if I actually want to open this damn thing up. My biggest disappointment so far is Nintendo's online structure appears to be vastly improved but still lagging consistently behind what the competition offers. On top of that everything else is also compared to what the competition currently offers which is kinda disappointing seeing how old the competition's platform is. I also worry about the consoles longevity because I dont see the instant wow factor that worked so well for the Wii with Wii Sports. I just dont know...I need a sign, anything to point me in the right direction.

Once you Fire Up Miiverse...Your concerns will melt away.
Not saying that it's not possible, but usually checking online is pretty inaccurate. The way those retail stores handle their inventory, it takes long to process that they sold an item or have taken it out of their inventory for whatever reason. I did see a few in person at my local Target and ToysRUs stores, though, they'll probably be gone by the end of Black Friday.

I agree with you, but there is no way to avoid the issues. From the hard locks, to the slow os and the extremely long patching process, Nintendo has given enough ammo to last for a while, so if you love your Wii U like I do, just take it like a man! hehehe.
It also does not help that almost every "port" sucks more on the Wii U. I saw some comparison shots of Call of Duty and damn, did not realize how bad some of the shadowing is on the Wii U version compared to the 360 version. Yes, it seems like most of it is lazy, shitty, un-optomized ports, but again, this is the card we are dealt and just have to deal with it.

Yeah, personally I wish that the signal was just a bit better, as right now I don't really have much success outside of the main open living room/dining room/hallway area that has good line of sight. We're not talking about an insignificant distance at all, so I'm not shaking my fist at what I perceive to be terrible hardware. However, it's just not reliable in pretty much any other room.
I haven't even tried the kitchen which is pretty close to the receiver notwithstanding two walls to go through. But it was 50/50 laying in bed.
Wii U doesn't have the same demand as Wii did. However, this doesn't mean the Wii U is selling poorly.
It also could mean these stores are holding back stock for Black Friday as well.

overall i'm happy with range. I get a decent signal in most of the kitchen, a strong signal in the bathroom and a 95% reliable signal upstairs.

Yeah, it's just not conducive to a 2,000 square foot ranch style house. When I say that it doesn't work in the bedroom, we're probably talking at least 35 if not 40 feet between two walls, and it kind of works. If it was just a bit better at transmitting between walls, it'd be fantastic. Oh well...

I've been using my Wii sensor bar. Everything seems to be working well. You should be good.
I can so relate with plagiarize playing in bed next to his wife. Original 3DS was awful for that, buttons made so much noise. 3DS XL is much better, yet not completely silent.
How is the GamePad compared to both in that regards?

I looked at the bar itself closely. It's labeled a Wii sensor bar and not a Wii U one. I believe it's exactly the same.

After I press the four symbols on the GamePad it won't connect even though I'm right on top of the console. I know other people have had this problem and I remember seeing a solution but don't remember what it was.
Its the exact same, I just used my old Wii one.

Until the end of today they are having a Buy 1 get 1 for 40% off on all Wii U and Wii games. You could get 2 black Wii remotes for less than 1 with this deal, which is what I did with 4 copies. 85 bucks for 4 Wii Remotes. The only difference between these ones and the new Wii U branded Wii remotes is that the sync button is ont he outside of the new ones as opposed to being on the inside of the battery slot.
