Dead body found in L.A. hotel's water tank

Man, the Hotel looks fucking ominous and creepy even on a sunny day outside:

i wouldn't check in there even with an indonesian SWAT team to my aid.

Well think about it. How would you get a dead body out of a hotel? Say she met some guy (maybe during the video there was a man outside of view) and went back to his room. He couldn't possibly leave the dead body in his room because the cleaning people would find it during turn down service and he would be caught in less than a day. I think if she was murdered in her room, the person would have just left her there because it wouldn't be that easy to track down who was responsible.

So she is murdered in the dude's room. Can't leave her there. Can't take her outside, someone at the front desk would notice. So what do you do? Instead of going down, you go up. Put distance between you and crime by delaying the discovery of the body. The killer probably got a good two weeks ahead of this investigation with the water tank trick. How many people have stayed in his room since then? How many times has cleaning been through there, getting rid of evidence each time.

Looking at it again I don't she is on drugs. I'll explaing later.

Her first weird hand movements look related to the elevator sensor, however, when she brings her hands together, it could be that she is cracking her fingers/knuckles. I have seen quite a few people do strange hand contortions when doing this.

URGENT

I think the elevator video that has been released to the public has been tampered with by someone. This is not a joke.

Could someone please look at the 2:57 mark and confirm something for me? Does anyone notice a jump-cut when the elevator door closes after she leaves?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KW8TYoEQ5g

Are my eyes deceiving me or is this really happening?

Either someone at the hotel tampered with the video to not be seen walking in the hallway, or if the LAPD released the video they cut something out so as to not make any potential suspects apparent. The rest of the video appears very fluid.

WTF is going on?! I hope the LAPD is at least aware of this. I can not see the damn time code of the video to even make sense of it. Is there a version of the video with the time code clearly marked?

I'm not saying that the tape is altered, but I'm more than sure (since I've seen security footage before) that security cameras aren't run 24/7. They only record when there is a change in movement in the scene. When nothing is happening for a few seconds, there's no need to keep recording since there's no change in scenery, it stops recording to save space/energy. It picks back up when the elevator closes (movement happens)

@2:48 the timestamp is nearly impossible to read, but I think it's 11:24:06 then @2:50 it jumps to 11:25:?? so at least a minute more of NOTHINGNESS in the scene happening.

@2:57 like you mentioned, the timestamp looks to be 11:25:11 and skips 3 seconds to 11:25:14, I'm thinking because nothing happened for 3 seconds.

I don't believe in mediums, but it's always a what if...

Must be excruciating being in that hotel and wanting to rinse out your mouth and take a hot shower after hearing about this. Yikes.

I don't like to judge, but it's clear as day, to me, that this girl is on some type of hallucinogen. Her hand movements toward the end display pretty convincing evidence to that fact. She is not "cracking her knuckles" but inspecting them in an odd manner. The paranoia and her difficulty to push the elevator buttons is even more indication. It's easy to say "she was paranoid because she was being followed!" But, her movements don't look hasty, as if she's being followed, and her movements to verify her paranoia just doesn't seem rational or normal.

Yeah my first thought was she ate some good shrooms. Probably had no idea what she was doing.

Yep, definitely on a hallucinogenic of some sort. Wouldn't be surprised if her death is due to her being completely out of it. Then again some psycho guy may have seen this as opportunity to take advantage of her.

The actual water tank was unlocked, so anyone could presumably open it. The only "mystery," I suppose, is that the door leading to the roof has an alarm on it and it seems it never went off or was shut off. My guess is that thing wasn't engaged in the first place.

That place is creepy and the surrounding area is a shithole at night. Wonder why she chose to stay there of all places.

The girl is definetly on something. Weird to explain but the way she acts really looks kinda like a shy introverted girl tripping balls.

Not even perse girls or introverted people. But she's definetly not being followed or hiding.

Plenty of videos online of people on the roof @ the cecil. I doubt the alarm worked, or that anyone cared.

Because she was a tourist and the hotel's website makes it sound really nice and glamorous.

Yelp is pretty damning though. Such a easy mistake.

Watched this creepy video late at night last night and felt spooked walking around the house in the dark. Fear of the unknown can be so powerful. Really hope they can figure out what happened.

Yeah as a med student who just learned about the details of hallucinogens, seems like that could be the case. It's possible that she thought she was on fire thus wanting to get into the tank, but I don't really understand the whole process of getting up there in the first place. She'd have to know that it's up there. If you're on a hallucinogen, you're likely to raise attention. The fact that she somehow ended up there without anyone knowing is suspicious as shit. This is even knowing that there's only like a dozen or two people in the hotel at that time.

I suppose it's also possible that she was hiding from someone that wasn't there (via the hallucinogen) and thus she went into the water tank to run away- but that's also a stretch IMO.

I understand that but one look at the surrounding area the first night should have made her move the hell out.

Downtown right now has a lot of places restaurants, clubs, bars, hotels, etc... where you seem safe but you turn the corner and you're in deep shit pretty easily.

NO! Don't listen to him, Illiterati. We were avi-brothers, but I gave in to the negativity I received through posts and PMs, and got rid of it.

Be strong, my friend.

I won't change for a while. I hate this avatar so much I need to keep using it, gladly irritating others. I'm glad you switched back though, since I always think you are Lester Freemon cracking eggs of wisdom all over threads when you post. (and yes I know it's not Lester)

I don't understand why some posters doubt she was on drugs. Sure, it's not a surefire thing, but to "doubt it" as in thinking less than 50% chance she was on drugs? What else would explain how she is acting in the elevator video? Talking to someone? Possible, but doesn't seem like it's more probable than just being on drugs. Rather than someone being on the right, then on the left etc, I think the simplest answer is she was on drugs.

It most definitely looks like she's tripping balls on that vid. It was very odd, childlike behavior.

I don't think that is the simplest answer. When we see someone alone on a video with no sound I think we tend to interpret her actions as crazy (or drugged). We don't know what she is hearing outside the elevator. And why doesn't the elevator start? She is not imagining that. We can all see it refuses to move despite her pushing buttons. The door even starts to close at 14 seconds but something stops it.

She may have some strange movements, but lots of people have their quirks and if we filmed them on camera while they were alone with no sound that could all look crazy. I think her being drugged is possible, but in my opinion something or someone is bothering her and she gets frustrated. Her exaggerated hand movements and actions could be out of fear or nervousness, something we all can experience without being crazy or on drugs. After she gives up (or maybe is talked into leaving down the hall), the elevator doors close and away it goes.

Yeah. The lack of audio is the main problem.

If she's hearing a noise in the hallway at 0:20 and if she's talking to someone on the right at 2:00, then her behaviour is not all that strange.

The only thing that really doesn't make sense is pushing four buttons when she gets in the elevator the first time. Is her eyesight so bad without her glasses that she can't see the floor numbers?

Its later.

i've worked for 10 years as a paramedic and i've seen (too) many strange acting persons. surprisingly many of them were not under the influence (of whatever) - at first and second glance i feel like her behaviour is odd, but i'm not familiar with her "normal" behaviour, so i don't really dare to come to a conculsion, it just keeps me curious. something seems odd, but i can't tell if it's really her or her reaction to something else.
audio would be so helpful in this case (elevator video)...

on a similar note, but somehow contradicting my above statement: someone suggested that her behaviour doesn't fit the reaction to common date-rape drugs: paradox reactions - they're quite common in Benzodiazepines, but also in GHB. "paradox" in these cases means that the drug that's supposed to sedate the patient/victim (duh) instead leads to a state of agitation.

I don't understand why some people are baffled as to why she would go to the roof. Chilling out on the roof of a tall building is awesome.

I think she got wasted, went to the roof, and climbed up onto the water tank. But who really knows.

I've seen too many malfunctioning elevators to think much of a door not closing when it should, or starting to close and then suddenly opening. Add on the fact that it's a shoddy hotel in a bad neighborhood, and you guaranteed to have elevators that are not exactly top-notch reliable.

Always possible she's not on drugs and talking to people that conveniently stay off camera. But being on drugs is still the simpler answer.

Plus in the video she hits all the buttons on the one side and goes waaay down to the bottom, where buttons like door open, stop, etc are.

Good point on the elevator. It could just be not working right.

as is someone meddling with the elevator, as in holding a "call elevator" button. far more probable than an isolated malfunction of the elevator, when later he demonstrates that he's working just fine while travelling to the other floors.

EDIT: someone from LA-GAF should take a detour and check these elevators and whether their "hold door" buttons act differently than usual.

Yeah, roofs are pretty awesome. She did end up in a water tank, and I'm not sure if it has been clarified, but I'm pretty sure it's not as simple as climbing up one and jumping into it. I believe firemen had to cut a hole into the water tank to get her out..it's not easy.

Also, the roof thing..I'm sure in some ways the hotel has more than one entrance o the roof. I could be wrong, but I'd say there is a decent chance there is more than one entrance. My friends and I used to go to the roof of this hotel in Boston all of the time. It also seemed to only have one access door to the roof (with an alarm), but one night (like second time we went upstairs), we noticed a crawl space door (like 3 feet high) next to the emergency door. In it was a stack of rugs rolled up in a hill all the way to the top of the ceiling (probably one foot of space in between rugs and ceiling). The ceiling was probably about 5 feet high. Anyway for some reason, we decided to climb over the rug pile haha, and at the bottom of the hill we noticed a wooden panel over a "wall". We moved the panel and noticed it led to a dark open room. In that room, there was a door that led to the roof. No alarm. I doubt they would have reported this area as a viable method of reaching the roof in a report either.

My point is, after my long winded story, is that maybe there could have been access to the roof that wasn't reported?

I dunno... elevator malfunctions seem random to me, with lots of isolated minor incidents of staying open/closed too long.

Of course it's entirely possible someone's holding it open with the call button. It's just that that theory would bring up a lot more questions, like why they are doing that and not getting on? If they are avoiding the camera because they know it's there, don't they have to worry about hallway cameras or something? For how long were they hoping to be off camera? How come she only acknowledges their presence much later in the video?

Just seems simpler to conclude that there's no one there.

I didn't realize they had to cut her out. Just a fucking sad story no matter what happened.

Elevators malfunction is strange ways all the time. No mystery there. This looks like user error though.

There supposedly are 2 fire exits (stairs) that could in theory get you to the roof. I also noticed graffiti on the tanks so people have been up there hanging out before. However that could have been from a long time ago, before the alarm system was in place. Since no alarm went off, either the roof was accessed by an employee or someone who knew a way around the alarm system. Could she have found a way? Possibly. But I think it is more likely that she had help getting to the roof or was forced there.

Or the alarm in this shithole of a hotel wasn't working.

did she just get wasted, and try to go swimming in the water tower?

Or has someone just always wanted to hide a body there? Was her toxicology report clear?
