thankfully i preordered villager.
that leaves villager, pikachu, and mario to my collection.
i'm going to pick up robin/lucina next, and maybe end it with shulk and duck hunt last. these are gonna look dope as fuck in my studio!

First off, I know you're exaggerating on purpose, but these look way better than the average Happy Meal toy. These look as good as any Infinity or Skylander figure, and better than some (especially Skylander stuff; I always found most of those figures to look fairly cheap). I honestly think they look pretty well made overall.
But secondly, and more importantly, you've never heard of people who collect shit? Like seriously, this is an alien concept to you. I personally don't "get that". My grandpa used to collect Star Trek merchandise, and he spent a fuckton on figures and stuff like this over the years. It's his thing, just Nintendo are other people's things. The data sharing stuff is secondary. It's just an added feature for 99% of the people who get these.
To answer your question, you can customize your character in the new Smash, so this could be a way to transport that around without having the recustomize your character. You can level up your character in ways and I think maybe you can even battle them with others to see who wins? I don't know if we know all of the features of Amiibo as of now. But's it pretty much just basic data sharing.

Edit: Actually on closer inspection Marth looks kinda weird. The Fox one looks the most detailed and closest to in-game imo.

Well, they already announced that the Nintendo Amiibos would work for multiple games. I'd assume that they would work for some games but for others the prize would be minimal to avoid people from, say, using Marth amiibo for Legend of Zelda.

It's a bit odd. So we know there will be different versions of characters, so how will that work? Will Smash Bros. Mario and NSMBU2 Mario spawn the same Mario in Smash Bros? Or a different Mario? No idea.
I'm not much of a collector, so I'll probably only get Samus from the first wave. Hope ZSS is coming out soon, that's the one I really want.
And now that I think about it, with Zelda, F-Zero, Animal Crossing and Excitebike coming to Mario Kart, I wouldn't be all that surprised if all Amiibos unlocked the respective character and a matching kart in MK8.

Yeah, that's kind of a domination what's happening on Amazon right now. And some of them already sold out: it seems both Nintendo and Amazon didn't expect this kind of demand for Marth, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, that's the most reasonable reason for those specific amiibos being already sold out.
Sounds like a great start! Let's see what happens in the next few days, though. I mean, if they'll be able to stay high in charts.

Do you guys think Nintendo will allow third party amiibos for exclusive games like MH4, Youkai Watch, Layton, etc. could get really interesting..
Reggie said at E3 they would love to see third parties used the techonology as well.
Zero indication for that. Would be against the idea of one figure for everything they promoted.

I bit the bullet and ordered Donkey Kong. Partly because I wanted to make sure I get one if they're hard to find later and partly because I wanted to help increase his ranking (yes, really).
I might tag Peach onto that order for my niece. I just don't know if she'll like the game or if she'd like the figure.

Relax, you're reading way too much into what I said and getting really unnecessarily defensive. I did say high quality, but its not really that different. It's still a cheap plastic toy figure that doesn't do much (physically anyway).
Of course I heard of people collecting things. I didn't realize that was pretty much the sole reason people wanted these, as others had pointed out to me before you. I didn't understand why anyone would want to have to buy a toy figure just to unlock features in a game. It kind of seemed like a rather ridiculous paywall. And I was (and still am a little bit) confused about how this works for games. I'm just mainly concerned how this is going to affect Mario Kart 8.

I really want a good Link figure, but I just cant stand those little stints that hold up "floating" figures like him. Hopefully Toon Link will fit my silly toy standards
Different versions am OK and are expected surely, just don't tell me that every game has its own line.

As I said, we don't know the exact details of what Amiibo will do. We know there's some basic data sharing and the ability the "summon" your amiibo character as an AI, though even that isn't clear. I'm sure we'll get a Direct that breaks it down at some point near the end of the year. I'm sure there will beno direct affect to Mario Kart 8. It'll most likely be something like saving a Kart layout to bring to your friends or something. Relax, your games are going to be fine if you're not interested in Amiibos.
