1440p, 60 FPS, high/ultra setting mix, Paris. My experience so far has been very nice, I'm actually rather enjoying the technical scope of the game, it's very pretty with a few inconsistencies and takes good advantage of my hardware. So many NPCs, so cool. I feel like this on GAF right now:
I do not support microtransactions and the like however and don't deny the game has some scalability issues for lower-tier hardware, but I'm rather enjoying the experience.
I don't like bad games. Nor do I blindly enjoy them. Unity is not a perfect game, but it's certainly not anywhere near close to bad even though some people on gaf who had no intention of playing the game in the first place wanted it to be. I actually laughed quite a few times at the thought of people calling this an ugly game visually. I honestly can't think of a character model in any other game that looks as good as Elise, especially when it comes to her hair simulation and the overall facial animation.
Ok...um... so the game is actually pretty good. I've gotten to the part where
arno is framed for murder of the Lord
which isn't that far.
Despite my nitpicks with the running animation and some of the jarring reaching that he does for some far away platforms, the ascend/descend aspect that they took from mirror's edge gives a lot of autonomy which is always great not to mention that it makes free running much smoother. That is also a running theme in the gameplay for this AC; the autonomy, like being able to snap to cover and being able to enter sneak mode(how did they not do this before). . The animations are much improved, even if there is further improvement that can be done.
The combat system is superb. I just think it would be better if it was an over the shoulder combat system with a reticule where you can aim your strikes(this is my dream melee combat system). the dodge animation is really nice, the parry is very satisfying and the animation for it is really cool and fighting multiple enemies is pretty cool.
The story is simple and decent so far with nice little intrigues here and there. I'm also a sucker for love stories that are handled in a mature and elegant way and this game does not disappoint so far(in french, don't know how it is in english). Nothing gratuitous or awkward. I like elise as a character and if she is well written, I can see myself getting attached. I just wish this was from her perspective... this reminds a lot Ezio running across rooftops to play around with women. I don't know if it will take a turn for the worst, but the presentation is good, the acting is good and the writing is especially good(keep in mind i'm playing the game in french).
Well concerning the graphics, i'm playing 4x DSR 1080p Max settings with solid 30-60 FPS with G-sync on. needless to say, large crowds/stained glass or not, this is a true next gen game. That lighting is using some kind of hybrid GI and the PBR is also very nice and the mixture of the two makes for some stupendous interiors. The graphics team made the right calls for this game...if this game wasn't marred with issues, it would have set a graphical standard where PBR and GI are the most important things. I wish they didn't go for the massive crowds. That tech isn't ready evinced by the pop in of their textures or their horrible IQ. I got the game for free with my GTX 970 and i was elated that i got it that way because of the backlash today. But if there was a demo, i would almost be tempted to pick this up, despite my convictions regarding Ubi's business practices.
I haven't got to the meat of this AC game yet(which is usually where I start to quit), but the improvements will likely make it easier to get through this game.Haven't bought an AC game for full price since AC2, which is probably why I'm enjoying it so much.
Made it to Sequence 5. Gotta say this game likely would've been a solid 85 + metascore if not for the total shit show performance wise. That said guys, this isn't a bad game. In fact it is quite good it just needs one helluva patch. Love the scale of things now too feels so authentic.

It's very real, albeit made before Unity. My biggest gripe is instead of fucking around with this bullshit companion app or Iniates they could have focused those resources on making a game that works.
Same reason why Arno doesn't get a knife variant of the hidden blade, each new assassin gets their own new thing. Darby also wanted to get rid of the pirate hand hook stereotype in AC4.

Now I'm not saying that the state of the game at launch is excusable but this isn't really still going on about forced parity is it? I think everything we've seen only goes to show that the game truly is CPU bound. The fact that cutscenes(GPU dependent) run faster on PS4 but gameplay(CPU dependent) runs faster on Xbox One only makes sense. We know the PS4 can use GPGPU to make up for CPU power, Mark Cerny said this himself, and that the PS4 is at a CPU disadvantage to the Xbox One(Same CPU at 10% higher clock). So if I had to guess the power that would've gone to making it 1080p is being devoted to GPGPU in order to maintain the amount of AI on screen at the highest framerate it can.(GPGPU is not a great replacement for a real CPU).
It still definitely needs to be fixed but I don't believe they lied when they said this game is purely CPU-bound, you can see it while playing and the frames only drop in crowded areas.

are there substantive differences between weapon types? I noticed the game features maces, spears, swords, maybe even other things, too. Do these have substantive differences beyond "I'll use this mace because it has +2 higher damage than this sword" or do they have different movesets or properties?
What I know of AC games is that the combat is generally pretty easy and based on timing counter moves and stuff like that, if that's the case, how does a different type of weapon change anything?

Playing on PS4 and the only problems I've encountered are NPC pop-in and some framerate hitches. Other than those issues I'm really enjoying the game. It does look really nice in motion, and I'm enjoying the story so far.
So is a bunch of the content forced co-op only? (missions, collectibles)
Seems pretty lame and the first AC game where you get experience the whole game just as a single player game, considering it's a single player game for the most part.

I have some connection issues late last night. But its getting better now.
The meat and potatoes of the game is still single player. The coop stuff is just mostly throwaway story scenarios with extensions of single player gamepkay. Its fun, but youre not missing much,

Signing in using a different browser fixed the issue, oddly enough, but thanks for the offer. Apparently, though, my poor ol' Galaxy S is too old, so tomorrow I'll finally have to get myself a microSIM and switch to the S3 that I have sitting around here somewhere.
