State of the market

Projected U.S. spending on video game hardware, content and accessories totaled $4.6B in June 2024, falling 5% when compared to a year ago. First half spending grew 1% compared to the first half of 2023, reaching $27.3B.

Hardware
une video game hardware spending fell 37% when compared to a year ago, to $287M, and finished 1H 2024 31% lower vs.YA. During the first half of 2024 Switch hardware spending was 48% lower than YA, while PlayStation 5 declined by 28%, and Xbox Series fell 18%.

PlayStation 5 again led the month’s hardware market in unit and dollar sales. Nintendo Switch once again finished 2nd in unit sales, while Xbox Series ranked 2nd in dollars. These same rankings were reflected across 2024’s total first half.

Software
Elden Ring was the best-selling video game of June 2024, returning to the top spot on the best-selling titles chart for the first time since it led the market during the May 2022 period. Sales of Elden Ring were boosted by the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

The release of the Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece collection on Steam helped it reach 3rd on the June 2024 best-selling titles chart. It previously had been available only on Switch via Cloud.

The Elder Scrolls: Online jumped from 198th in May to 18th in June helped by the launch of The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road, while Street Fighter 6 finished at #20 in June after placing 72nd on the May chart driven in part by promotional pricing.

Mobile
Sensor Tower: Top 10 mobile games by U.S. consumer spend in June and rank change vs May: MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, Roblox, Candy Crush Saga, Last War: Survival, Whiteout Survival (+1), Coin Master (-1), Brawl Stars (+1), Township (-1) and Pokémon GO (+4).

“The year over year trend continues, with US mobile gaming spending up 12% comparing June 2024 to June 2023, though spend is down 3% over May 2024,” said Samuel Aune of Sensor Tower. “The rankings for the top five remain unchanged month over month."

"Although its rank didn't change, Roblox saw a 15% increase in revenue month over month... driven by a UA campaign spiking downloads 22% and active users," said Aune. "Also, Pokémon GO saw a 22% increase in revenue month over month coinciding with its 8th anniversary event."

Accessories
June spending on Accessories fell 7% when compared to a year ago, to $204M. Growth in the Remote Play Device segment (PlayStation Portal) was offset by a 9% drop in Gamepads.

The PS5 Dual Sense Wireless Controller Midnight Black was June’s best-selling accessory, while PlayStation Portal led accessories in dollar sales across 2024’s first half.

Why skip Xbox’s Call of Duty MW3 at #2 in the thread name?
Based on their other Circana titles they just highlight debuts and biggest movers on the chart. Nothing nefarious is going on and you can check their other titles for that. COD has been planted in the Top 5 since it's release so there isn't a real reason to waste thread title space on that.

I'm just here for the monthly PS Portal update. It's a portal world. We're just living in it.

I wonder what he includes in this: PS5 version played on PS5, PS5 + PS4 (BC) versions played on PS5 or PS5 + PS4 (BC) versions on PS5 PLUS PS4 version on PS4

Helldivers 2 still the 3rd biggest game on PC for June? But but...i heard it only lasted a month? How can this be?
It's not in the top 10 for MAU on Playstation though. That was kinda suprising, tbh.

Probably will jump back up when the Illuminate enter the game.
Whenever that is...

The streamers and fanboys on youtube were claiming xboxes were being sold out on Amazon and the likes after the June showcase. What happened?
They got bitch-slapped by reality, as I always point out when Xbox’s biggest cheerleaders have orgasms over a showcase (specifically how it relates to PlayStation and how Sony should respond). When it’s report card time, mouths have once again closed and the real meat and potatoes are at the table.

And agreed on the need for the Series S. Folks REALLY need to consider how much worse Xbox would look right now without it.

The only thing I like about these numbers is that it bodes for a native Sony handheld again.

Portal is just a glorified Backbone and it's doing numbers.

Vita was terrible timing compounded with a multitude of issues, now is the time for a new one.

The PS5 version is always calculated separately, unlike the Xbox version which they usually combine together to inflate it :p

Man it's pretty telling for the state of the industry that of the top 20 selling games, only two of them are wholly original 2024 releases (and both of those are outside the top 10). Even the normies are figuring out that gaming sucks now and just buying old stuff.
