State of the market
June 2023 U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories reached $4.7B, a 9% increase vs YA. It was the 2nd highest spending ever achieved in a June month, trailing only June 2021's $4.8B.

Year-to-date consumer spending was flat when compared to the same period in 2022, at $21.8 billion.

Hardware
Video game hardware spending increased 22% vs YA, to $454M. This is the highest video game hardware spend for a June month since the $617M reached in June 2008. Double-digit percentage growth in PlayStation 5 spending offset declines in spending on Xbox Series and Switch.

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales during June 2023. Consumer spending on PlayStation hardware reached its highest June total since 2008, while unit sales were the highest achieved since June 2010.

PlayStation 5 continues to lead the 2023 hardware market across both units and dollars.

Software
Diablo IV was the best-selling game of June, instantly becoming the #3 best-selling game of 2023 YTD. Four other new releases appeared among the top 20 best-sellers, including Final Fantasy XVI (#2), Street Fighter 6 (#3), F1 23 (#15) and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (#17).

Launch month sales of Street Fighter 6 more than doubled those of Street Fighter V (February 2016). Street Fighter 6 enjoyed the highest launch month dollar sales for a Head-to-Head Fighting game since the April 2019 launch of Mortal Kombat 11.

Mobile
Sensor Tower reports the top 10 games by U.S. consumer spending in June as: Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Royal Match, Coin Master, Monopoly GO!, Gardenscapes, Township, Pokémon Go, Jackpot Party - Casino Slots, and Homescapes.

"Spend trends in June 2023 were relatively flat compared to June 2022. Between Gardenscapes, Township, and Homescapes, publisher Playrix now has three titles in the top ten (by consumer spend) in June," said Abraham Yousef of Sensor Tower.

"Also moving into the top ten, Scopely's Monopoly GO has been on a tear since its April 2023 release with June 2023 consumer spend up 56% MoM (month-over-month)" - Abraham Yousef, Sensor Tower.

Accessories
Accessories spending during June increased 14% when compared to a year ago, totaling $214 million. June's top 4 best-selling accessories in dollar sales were PlayStation 5 DualSense gamepads, led by the DualSense Edge.

The PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge remains the best-selling accessory of 2023 in dollar sales..

PS5 had the second highest units sold for Playsation hardware since June 2010 which was 426K and it must have been higher than 398k in June 2011 so PS5 units were between 398k and 426k, this was a big increase over May which was estimated between 250k and 275k. I will add this additional info to the OP.

Edit: Welfare originally didn't include PS2 units, When you add PS2 to PS3 + PSP hardware numbers in June 2010 and 2011 then this gives the PS5 a range of between 406k and 487k for June 2023.

Highlights for me:
  • PS5 remains the king. Xbox declined in June, in which they had their successful Xbox Showcase & Starfield direct (!)
  • Final Fantasy trumps Street Fighter and is already the 9th best selling game of the year, beating Dead Space, Elden Ring, Minecraft, Fifa, Ragnarok, NFL, TLOU P1, etc.
  • Xbox further loses market share in the US.
  • Playrix continues to surprise everyone in the mobile space.

Edit: ARE these DOLLAR SALES.. not sells numbers??

Hogwarts still up there thats very surprising..

and of course MK8 the forever man... just crazy.

It's crazy how Xbox is declining in its prime! Less than three years out, it should be increasing. It's headed into what is typically the best year in a console's life cycle.

This is nuts.

But I heard temp price cuts for the PS5 meant it's not a good look.....

:pie_thinking:

They are literally breaking sales records before the temp price cut.

What in thee hell...

Highest spending June since 2008. Looks like the PS5 carried this month. Switch decline is expected but Xbox declining in its biggest market only 3 years into the gen is crazy.

FFXVI already the 9th best selling game of 2023, haters keep pushing the narrative that it failed though, I love it lol. Good to see SF doing well, Diablo was obvious, I bought all 3 👌

Isn't this the month Xbox had its massive Showcase that made Sony's look like shit? I guess the people have spoken. Xbox won
in our hearts.

This might be the first time I've seen no GTAV in the top 20.
Good job SE with Final Fantasy!
Also Elden Ring in the top is nice. That game deserves it

This just shows how no one gives a fuck about showcases. MS still dead last with all the hype around their show and PS5 with a huge June with that terrible showcase.

Also, both Spider-Man games top 10 is crazy to me. Spider-Man 2 will do numbers most people aren't expecting tbh.

Plus TLOU remake still top 20 for the year. Not bad for a remake no one wanted.

PS5 exclusive FFXVI above multiplatform Street Fighter is a surprise considering how it increased sales related with the previous entry. Good hit for Square Enix!

This speaks volumes. PlayStation got people to invest heavily in that platform is a strategy they're used to. But the Dualsense Edge which retails for £200/$200 has been selling like hot cakes in the EU since it launched. Despite a war and most EU countries being in light recession.

Now we know why Marathon is sitting at 19 million views lol

This tweet from Mat basically implies that the PS5 had a more impressive June (both sales and revenue wise) than every prior one during the PS4 gen. Wtf!?

Basically biggest June for PlayStation since MGS4 released…which also marked the beginning of the turnaround for PlayStation back then.

PS5 is in evrry way bigger than the ps4. It just hasn't surpassed it because of thise covid years but even that will change soon.

I like Playstation a lot, but this triggers me to no end. I'm going to have to buy a thrid DS controller due to analog drift and I have a suspicion that's one of the reasons they're selling so many.

I was wondering wtf happened June 2008 that made it a high watermark, that makes sense now. Not sure what was June 2010 though.

PlayStation 5 Numbers looking like Xbox 360 lol
Yeah, it's like in the early 360 days where the 360 was beating the PS3 2:1 in these monthly NPD charts only that now it's reversed.

Edit: It's a bad look for MS and Xbox when the US market is supposed to be your strongest market.

This is especially big because the US is Xbox's strongest market. And they are losing market share there.

This gen is pretty much done for Xbox and I don't see Starfield turning things around.
It might push Xbox to #2 in september, but that won't last.

Despite what some Gaffers may think, Xbox is becoming irrelevant, even in their strongest markets.

Even Phil Spencer admitting it in that interview wasn't enough for some people to open their eyes.

Dual Sense: £50
Dual Sense Edge Pro controller: £200

I can assure you that nobody is buying the £200 Pro controller because of stick drift.

I brought it up a few weeks ago in another thread.

Xbox has been "selling" Starfield for the last 2 years now. Let's assume Starfield is a resounding success and even hits God of War Ragnarok highs. What's next then?

What is the next big game for Xbox that's going to do that? I don't know any upcoming game that will have a big impact and can go up against TLOU 3, Ghost of Tsushima 2, Death Stranding 2, Wolverine, etc. I think Xbox will rely on Fable after Starfield, but even that is extremely niche.
