angle theory for JL3k, what if
"The Five" are evil clones of the real Justice League and this is a redemption of the CSA story? Clones of the JLA are destroying the future and clones of the CSA will redeem themselves by stopping them, if they don't kill each other first?
Wouldn't that be interesting to read?
Seconded, that cover is hot sex.

That would be great and honestly wouldn't surprise me at all.

Those were the BotA issues.

Oh right, I completely forgot about that. That makes sense. Thanks.

I agree that it feels like a really quick turnaround from the final issue straight to the omnibus. And I definitely would have picked up the Uncanny X-Force omnibus by now but I bought all the individual trades about a month before it was announced. Typical.

Image solicits are up.

Rat Queen vol. 1! Chew vol. 8! Saga vol. 3! Possibly Sex Criminals vol. 1? Some good stuff here for me, and some awesome looking single issues too.

Fatale is getting deluxe OHCs. I'm in for Roberson's Sovereign, and who can resist Millar's Starlight? No one. No one can resist it.

Im in for Sovereign as well. Hopefully Robinson shows and not tells, he has a habit of doing the other too much. Starlight though brah, you gotta get in on that ground floor of that Millarworld universe.

Can I take a moment to talk about Superboy. We were finally getting to the point of having a character that was turning into some one that you could like. We were finally making progress and he was starting to become a hero. So what do they do, kill him and replace him with an even douchier version of himself.

Fucking hell.

I know GH loved the legion connection at the end, but didn't make up for the rest of the crap. It may be time to drop Superboy till Kon is back, or till they get ride of the Jon Kent douche bag.

If you start buying Millarworld books now, you'll be set for the crossover event.

I wish he would hire away Greg Land and Scott McDaniel. But Inhuman will take up a lot of the former's time. Sucks that we will have to wait like another month to hear he news. Those Marvel solicits were huge. The only one that worried me that I'm interested in was Ghost Rider. Brah sould be dealing with the supernatural, not wannabe gangsters that hang out at the community center. Please no Morbius.

Hoping for a poster of this fracavella silver surfer cover

I saw his Nightwing cover in the shop and had to lol

So anyone have any year end thoughts on their favorite books / writers / artists / whatever?

Driving into work listening to the most recent iFanboy ep and they unanimously gave best series of the year to Thor - God of Thunder. For me it would probably be a three way tie between Hawkeye, Daredevil or Saga.

Best of the Year?

1. Hawkeye (would've liked more issues, but what we got was SO GOOD)
2. Avengers Arena
3. The Manhattan Projects
4. Archer & Armstrong
5. Superior Spider-Man (goin' off the rails on a CRAAAZY TRAAAIN)
6. X-O Manowar
7. Batman
8. Sex Criminals
9. Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye
10. Afterlife with Archie

My criteria for top 10 of 2013 has to have seen at least 5 releases for the year. A title like Rat Queens and few others could easily be on the list but they will have to wait for 2014.

My favorite books of the year has been:

1. Geoff Johns Trinity War/Forever Evil event.
2. Batman
3. Saga
4. Green Arrow
5. Superior Spider-Man
6. X-Files Season 10
7. East of West
8. Lazarus
9. Trillium
10. The Wake.

So i should buy the Rat Queens trade that was just solicited for Smarch?

Signed Thor #1.....thor.....thorrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Now that the Marvel March solicits are now out, how long before we know when Pete comes back? Surely it'll be April or May for the movie release.

I think the last page
all but promises that Kon will be back however; How can Kon be the one to become the inspiration for the Legion if he isn't around to do anything? I think this Jon Lane Kent arc isn't meant to last.

Running joke in my house. Putting weekly comics away in box. "Hey babe, look what I still have," holds up Thor #1, my wife roles her eyes. Calls me a terrible human being. Says I need to get it out to you.

Maybe Santa will help me out ;)

One more issue of Goblin Nation in April, then probably the return, or at least the build to the return. Marvel has the Family Business OGN, a trade of the Matt Kindt mini and presumably a trade of #700.1-5 to sell to movie-goers, nevermind the back catalogue.

Thanks for the image suggestion. Manhattan Projects doesn't sound like something id enjoy so I'll just ignore it. The other stuff i'll look into.

In other news I got another volume of fables in the mail, and it has a crushed damage corner that creased all the pages. Pissed off about it.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of keeping things around, last year for Christmas i mailed my friend two mini trades of Courtney Crumrin to his old address, usps ended up returning them to me and i got him some steam game instead. I've had these books, still gift-wrapped, allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll year and i'm going to resend them this year to hopefully the right place.

That is what I figured, but you never know with comics. Nothing is ever set in stone you know. It was just such a disappointing issue, after we've FINALLY had all this progress with Kon. He was starting to become a character worth reading, and finally starting to deserve the title of Superboy, and then BAM! Right back to -100 with super douchey Kon to the extreme. I wish we had some idea how long this Jon Lane Kent story was going to last. If it's something like 6 - 12 issues I might drop the book till then. I really dislike evil douchey Superboy that much.

I think i'm done with Shaolin Cowboy, awesone art but literally no story anymore
just the same damn pages over and over again of killing zombies for 2 straight issues basically now.

As a Darrow fan who loved the first series and was greatly anticipating this new one I feel like he has taken a giant steaming shit on me as a fan the last 2 issues. I understand maybe messing about and doing it for one issue but I'm paying 4$ an issue for this bs. Never thought I'd be happy that it's a mini-series. Seriously goddamn pissed about it

.

Shaolin Cowboy is absolutely hilarious to me

You have to wonder how long they can just keep selling 22 pages of a dude fighting zombies drawn by one of the greatest comic artists in the world

I respect the balls of it, if anything

Lazarus #5 was raaaaad. Little Forever flashbacks, new "waste" characters introduced, Forever being a badass, interesting back matter. All that and a bag of chips.

I picked up a copy of that Galacta: Daughter of Galactus one-shot from a few years ago. It was oddly amusing. It seems like a silly premise, but it had its own kind of charm.

Also, Adam Warren did the art. Can't wait for Empowered 8 next week. Weeeeee!

Believe there's only 1 issue left so.......... 1 more haha

Don't forget Nowhere Men. It's a million times better than those listed.

Can't be better than Velvet, sorry. Brubaker and Epting kicking ass with Ms. Templeton having one of the best female facial designs I've seen in comics, such a beautiful yet cold face that goes completely in line with being a dark ex-spy. So much better than how Epting drew Sharon Carter during their Captain America run together. Plus I like a white Rogue streak in women's hair hehe. Everyone has their opinions, what can I say? :p

I will check out Nowhere Men at some point on your recommendation though Benjamin.

I know this is more like a monthly comics thread than a graphic novel thread, but there's no obvious outlet to ask so I'll ask here...

Doing some last minute Christmas shopping. Any one-off (or available as a one off) graphic novels this year with human / emotional / social themes (as opposed to an emphasis on combat or superpowers)? Good themes are mental health, love, family, politics, coming-of-age, history, war, etc. Supernatural stuff is fine if the story is essentially grounded in human drama or comedy. Blankets, Black Hole, Maus, Ghost World, etc are all good points of reference. Would really appreciate your advice.

What about something like Daytripper? I've only read one issue, but i've heard great things about it and it's one-offy.

I'd go for Nightly News by Hickman.

I wasn't thinking of it from that angle, but that would really really make sense. Would explain
why the characters are dicks to each other. Why Hal keeps whining about the ring, etc.

but I am taking tiny steps forward

I was just about to suggest the exact same thing. That came straight to mind for me. I read the whole thing in one sitting and I really enjoyed it. I'd definitely recommend that.

Other recommendations would be I Kill Giants or Asterios Polyp. Both one book and both focus on human/emotional/social themes. And both are excellent.

The Red Wing by Jonathan Hickman. Sci-fi story about a war fought with planes that time travel.

I thought the artistic approach was the most interesting thing about that one. I mean, the aesthetics were nice, but you have to admit some of those pages had a lot of empty space.

From this year? Well, MARCH: Book One is the first in a trilogy, but its getting a lot of raves this year. Its about a Georgia congressman coming up and participating in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Its not just a retelling of the movement, and its not just an after-school special/take-your-medicine kind of thing either, but a very personal, human story that even if you're not black or didn't grow up during that time, its easy to relate to its theme and its voice.

Another recent popular one I really enjoyed was Asterios Polyp. On the surface, it seems like just another variant of "rich white man finds life is meaningful", something you seen from Woody Allen and the ilk a million times. But its all about the execution, and the sheer craft and artistry in how the story is told by David Mazzuchelli is absolutely compelling. Not just visual trickery to spice his story, Mazzucchelli's figures and panel/page layouts fully use the comic book medium to shape the people and themes of his narrative. Its actually pretty exciting if you're a comic nerd like myself, but I also think normal people could enjoy it as well!

Asterios Polyp was a book that i said gawd damn after i was done. Mazzuccheli is a genious

if you havent read it WE3 is an instaaat classic

Darwin cookes PAarker adaptations are fantastic

nthing Asterios Polyp.

I have some problems with the story, but it's serviceable and the things Mazz does with the form are genuinely amazing even if you're not familiar with comics.

If you're fine with a single volume that kinda just... ends, Battling Boy vol. 1 is a coming of age story that also has a 50 page fight scene.

Sounds like The Fifth Beatle is what you need.

The Fifth Beatle is the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided the Beatles - from their gigs in a tiny cellar in Liverpool to unprecedented international stardom. Yet more than merely the story of "The Man Who Made the Beatles," The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Brian himself died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two, having helped the Beatles prove through "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" that pop music could be an inspirational art form. He was homosexual when it was a felony to be so in the United Kingdom, Jewish at a time of anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was considered just a dingy port town.
