Deux Ex Remastered announced (Aspyr), out Feb 5

I'm using the Deus Ex: Transcended mod. Very faithful to the original game but patches a lot of things that you would want fixed. This remaster looks a bit ugly and I don't think being on console is a good enough reason to go for it over the PC gog download with mods.

I was thinking about giving it a try but I know those days console versions of pc games were quite downgraded. How different it was? Did it have all the content at least?

It's a loading nightmare to be honest with smaller segments and quite a few changes, its a tad like babies first Deus Ex. But.. if you need Deus Ex, it'll do in a pinch :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Works well via emulation on the Steam Deck too.

Honestly though, it's best on PC with mods.

I will end up giving this.. remaster thing a go, but from the looks of it, it's pretty poor.

I wish Nightdive had got it.
 
The sad thing is, this is about as good as it'll get for the foreseeable future, seeing as an actual NEW entry in the franchise, would be a miracle..
 
Some of the official screenshots... oof. It's like they've sent the entire game to an AI model and copy-pasted what it spat out. And imagine what else is there they're not showing.

I'd love to support any Deus Ex release, but this will be a skip.
 
What I don't get is, it isn't as if the game has gone through a Unreal engine remake like Metal Gear Delta, so why does it take all the way into next year to get this out?

Aspyr should be ashamed. They've turned one of the all-time greats into some DOOM 3 knock-off.

I'm buying this. It doesn't look exactly how I wanted, but I am hoping that supporting this will give us a chance at getting more Deus Ex games. They'd better keep the OST intact.

How the fuck does Aspyr keep getting work and never actually improving? Are they like super cheap? I'd forgive one fail or two, but man, they miss 90% of everything they fucking touch.
 
I actually just finished a Revision playthrough of this. Still holds up remarkably well and is still the GOAT. Playing through DE: Mankind Divided right now and I am really enjoying it. In a perfect world, we'd have a new Deus Ex game in development by a team that can handle it.

Couple of things:

  • Eidos Montreal - I like where your head is at. But if the plan is to reinvigorate interest in what is arguably the greatest immersive sim IP ever made, wtf are you doing with Aspyr. That's the very opposite of what you should be doing.
  • Remake - Like I said, love the OG, but this would be ripe for a remake with some strong financial backing. Don't know if current right holders have the chops to do it justice though.... so maybe not.
  • Play Revision Mod - If you want to play the OG Deus Ex, do it the right way - buy it on steam (currently $0.97 USD) and download/use the revision mod with it. See below.







Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....

It looks fine. Sites like PCGamer exist to push the hyperbole because it gets them cheap and easy clicks.

Seriously. This remaster looks fine. A damn sight nicer than something like ReVision (no offense to those guys, they also did fine). No, we're not going to get a full-fat visual extravaganza running in UE5 at 12 fps, and you know what? That's okay.

For roughly under $2.00, there is nothing wrong buying the original GOTY Edition on Steam. Yes this version is slightly broken out of the box and may not run well on Windows 10/11, and will require a few patches. It is DRM Free, you can run it outside of Steam. You are getting the original game 'as is'.

But the GOTY Edition does also seem to run pretty well on proton/ Steam Play using either SteamOS, or the Linux version of Steam. Seems to work well on Steam Deck. One of the surprises of proton sometimes, as how it has less issues running older games than Windows at times.

The only remasters I own from Aspyr are the Tomb Raider 1-3 and 5-5 remasters. Personally, I think these are really good overall, on a technical level. They were all based on the Macintosh source codes. But overall, a quick and easy way to play the original Tomb Raider games without any hassle. The remastered content can be hit or miss. These remasters also run incredibly well on proton as well.

I am not sure about the remastered Models and textures in this Deus Ex remaster port. But if the underlying features are good and there is a way to play with original models. I may buy it.
 
I'd prefer them Ray-Trace-ifying the original over doing these weird 2003-era models with poor lighting. Ray tracing makes old games look immersive and fresh while also keeping the OG style. Just look at Minecraft or Quake 2 RTX.
 
I have never had the pleasure of playing Deus Ex, as I am a worshipper at the altar of the console (and was told not to bother with the PS2 version).

I'm probably gonna get this. Even though I've never played it, I'm extremely aware of the legacy.

BUT

If this is the idea you have for a graphical update, why not just add some QOL shit and release it with the graphics relatively unchanged (I'm thinking Baldur's Gate ports, etc.).

"Hey guys, the Deus Ex modern gen port is looking great, but uh...could you make sure to adjust the graphics so that everyone laughs at us when we announce? I've spoken to him and the CEO is firm on this."
 
I could see this getting heavily patched, but as it stands right now it looks worse than the original. That is such a shame. A legit Deus Ex 1 remake on consoles is a dream game.

This makes me feel like we'll never get part 1 in the mankind divided engine.
 
I'll stick with the REAL version of this game: the PS2 one 😏

More seriously, fucking up the originaI game's visuals is a given at this point with theese remasters/remakes but I would definitely be more worried about them futzing with the game's balance, difficultly, script etc in attempt to align the game to "modern tastes"

All I can hope for is that this serves as a basis for modders to step in, without having to battle UE1 and 2000's graphics pipeline implementations. Deus Ex with modern APIs could be what we need to get an actual remaster.
 
I was mega excited about this until i saw that it was Aspyr doing the port.

Now, I'm only a little excited and expecting it to be mediocre.

This is a game that deserved the NightDive treatment more than any other classic.

Bro...many companies have tried to re-release and remaster older games and they have come out to be SHIT. Kingpin is an obvious example.

With Nightdive, you know they will run well and be 100% true to the original. The onloy blemish Nightdive has that I can recall is Blade Runner.

For a game that is a masterpiece on this level and a company with a less than stellar track record as Aspyr, there are reasons to be less excited.
