Digital Foundry Performance Analysis: Fallout 4

Wow, looks like I'm definitely going for the PC version. It's a shame the console versions ended up a bit rough. Hopefully they're get resolved in a few patches.

Someone posted this gif, I can definitely see the difference.

Seems like texture loading issue...

My good man, you certainly can. I produced 25 minutes worth of video for the game in addition to the article itself. It's quite massive.

Hopefully tomorrow or Wednesday it will show up.
Awesome

Been meaning to tell you that I've loved all your recent video content.

wonder if time played will change performance? It has to a certain extent with other bethesda games.

All i'm saying is a performance test that happens directly out of the vault won't matter much if your load times and fps decrease the longer you play and the more items you have or collected/changed.

Honest question (that's actually something I'm curious for a while): Is Digital Foundry owned by Eurogamer? Are their reviews composed by the same team?

I'm not entirely sure, I know there are three or four guys who work for Digital Foundry and reviewers are part of a separate team I think.

No, that's just draw distance/LOD on consoles being lower than PC at higher settings.
I don't know the house is missing walls... looks like it is loading it in the Xbone version yet... maybe with some more time the Xbone get a better picture.

Of course there is less assets in Xbone version but half asset seems to be loading issue.

It is far from ideal on the PS4. But the horrible Xbox One version puts things into perspective...
What is it with this franchise and the lackluster performance on consoles?

What you're actually seeing is the PC version drawing in shadows in the distance thereby filling the openings in the house with darkness, and the XBO version not drawing those shadows. Add to that the models themselves having a higher level of detail on PC because that can be pushed out farther on PC, and more assets like bushes/grass because again the draw distance is pushed out farther. This isn't a streaming/loading issue.

It's the aggressive LoD (Level of Detail) in the console versions. It basically removes objects from the gameworld until you're close enough, then it 'pops' them back in.

I was led to believe in a previous thread that XBox One has a superior CPU for open world games, yet this data draws a different conclusion. Perhaps Fallout 4 isn't open enough to take full advantage.
This thread is legendary. :D
Any official word from Bethesda over ZeroFPSgate?

Danny saying PS4 is glitchier than PC is different than saying PS4 is "jankier" than Xbox One.
I think he was talking about the "console pair" in that tweet:

@ciaranmck: @dannyodwyer How does the Xbox version hold to PS4. I want the Xbox version ye see?

@dannyodwyer: @ciaranmck15 Better. I played 10 hours on Xbox One and it was fine.

?

Look at the picture full-sized: There aren't walls being loaded in, it's just the shadows.

They're not being drawn in on Xbox because it's too much strain on the engine. That's what LOD is there for - to cut elements from the distance that aren't deemed necessary so that performance increase.

And what about the PS4 and these shadows?

The annoying ass 1 sec pause in the XB1 version looks like it can be fixed, but overall I'm not surprised that the PS4 version runs better in crowded town areas. That's the price of 1080p on XB1.

Bottomline seems to be:
pc: ok regardless
ps4: meh
xone: worse than meh

i got ps4 only so i'll wait for Patches... or gonna get the goty edition next year

Exact area I had a lot of lag too. DF are lame for not including this area in their video, its near the beginning of the game and it should be addressed as its more laggy then any part of their video

Experienced the same issue in the XB1? Or you played the PS4 version aswell?

The only major gripe I have with the graphics on PS4 is the obnoxiously short shadow rendering distance, looks like a near constant distraction.

Damn here I was panicking about the PS4 version and going to get it on XB1. Yesterdays thread made it look like the XB1 version was solid 30fps and the ps4 version was frequently 15fps

Figured that the PC version would be safe this time around (unlike the Arkham Knight disaster). Glad I have that option this generation. May wait for a patch or so still (or a sweet GMG discount). Good to know that I'll be getting the best version when I decide to pull the trigger.

The fact that at no part of the PS4 vs XB1 video do they go inside any building isn't getting pointed out enough. I understand it from their perspective.. like if you test performance in games the last spot you expect drops in an open world game is inside a buildings interior. Esp one that has a load screen before it.

Almost every video showcasing the fps drops have been inside a building.

I just looked at the X1 performace analisis and right in the begining thers a frame drop to 2fps.

That seems like their FPS tool getting confused when the menu is opened, rather than a legitimate drop to 2 fps. Blimblim mentioned this:

PC is the "best" version in terms of raw performance, but other people prefer to play on consoles, despite the poorer fps and graphics, so it's all up to the user to decide what is "best" way they want to play the game

This is when he is in the armor menu. In normal gameplay I only see a drop to 17fps when he is walking back in the deathclaw fighting.

The other videos without the framerate counter I didn't found a freeze like in the DF videos.

Yeah. Actually the XB1 version seems way more solid by Gamersyde videos, compared to the DF anaylsis. I'm a bit more releived.
