If I don't get BBC America, how can I watch the new episodes? Are they officially online somewhere?

Don't forget that there has been only one new episode in the past seven months (Xmas ep), and there probably wont be a new episode available for another 2 months at least.

Everything aired recently (expect the xmas ep) should be on DVD/Bluray by now.

Season 5 (and all recent seasons) is $9.99 on VOD on Amazon right now.

So, we can pretty much say now the "No returning monsters in Series 6" stuff is a load of rubbish...

returning threat spoiler...

I'm am very, very, very conflicted over which is the better Doctor.

The current Doctor, Matt Smith, is possibly the best. His mannerisms and timing are incredible. However, Tom Baker is still the iconic Doctor. David Tennant brought a manic intensity to the role, and did it great justice, but he was a bit campy and suffered from bad writing and direction. Christopher Eccelston played an excellent Doctor, too, in a genuine way I have a hard time describing. It was a shame he only lasted one season.

Those four are the best of the bunch. But, which is the best out of them is something I cannot decide on.

(For the record, I grew up watching Doctor Who on TVO in the '80s, so I'm quite familiar with Tom Baker and his crappy successors. Seriously, what the fuck is this shit?)

The Doctors are supposed to be campy, somewhat. Part of the charm. I thought Tennant was the best until Matt Smith. Smith is just (and I had to Google an appropriate term) barmy and that fits well with the Doctor. So my opinion is that Smith is the best representation of the Doctor, but all the modern Doctors were excellent.

I'll throw out this analogy too. Notre Dame is iconic in American college football. Great players, etc. But in the modern era (in addition to Notre Dame being terrible now), those legendary old Notre Dame players are nothing compared to the average athletes of today. You can't compare them because training, equipment, etc. is so much better today.

Ok, maybe college football wasn't a good analogy for the Brits. It would be like Jackie Stewart racing against Michael Schumacher. Stewart was awesome, but put him up against today's drivers and he likely wouldn't do as well.

When I watch the old Baker episodes, they are good. But watch the Mars serial against Christmas Carol and there's no contest. The acting, production values, etc make Christmas Carol much better in direct comparison. I'm not talking about effects and what not, just the set dressings and performances. However, when judged in isolation, Baker's era was great.

I always took that to mean the addition of more monster. Anything already revealed is fair game.

I'm not saying I disliked David Tennant's camp, but it was occasionally a bit over the top.

Yes, Tom Baker's Doctor was a product of its time, and looking back, yes, production values and everything were very low. He worked wonders with what he was given. (Much like RTD's Doctors worked wonders with some of the dreadful stuff they were given.) But if you were to transport Baker at his prime to modern times, and put him in the modern series, I'm sure he would hold up quite well. (Not that the fast-paced action of today's series would be easy with that long scarf.)

Character Options is making some Lego-esque Who toys

The Character Building range will include 3D micro-figures, brought to life with sculpted facial features whilst play sets will be uniquely tailored to Doctor Who. Fans will be able to build their own Doctor Who world with all their favourite characters including the Doctor and Amy Pond with their famous foes the Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping Angels.

Distinctive to the Character Building range will be the use of texture on some of the building blocks, whether it be the sleek and smooth edges of a spaceship, or the rough edges of a rock face. This will be pivotal in recreating each environment, providing a natural look, but still allowing easy construction play. The entire range will be displayed at the Character Options stand at the London Toy Fair with the first products set for release in Spring 2011.

I have 2 - I have the toy, and the Sonic Screwdriver Screwdriver.

They're quite cool - but neither is perfect. The toy is obviously plasticy and mine (one of the first ones) is a bit flimsy and the light doesn't work, so I need a replacement.

The Screwdriver is amazing in that it has heft, but doesn't "extend", but the top comes off with the screwdriver bits inside... though they have run away from me.

..oh, and I have the styluses for the DS. So I need the Wii Remote and another other Sonics for the collection. But the projector looks retarded.

Dunno what the torch is like though.

They need to make the toy with the solid body of the screwdriver. :(

I'll probably get her a later model of the toy one. Although an actual screwdriver variant sounds awesome.

edit: thanks for the links by the way.

To anyone on Twitter, Joe Hill is wanting to make a petition for a Best of Doctor Who set. 11 discs for 11 Doctors and have it released on November 11th, 2011. Just add the hashtag #11discsfor11doctors

This is too ridiculous not to post:

Doctor Who’s Amy Pond will fall pregnant in the new series of the hit sci-fi show.

The Time Lord’s companion – played by Karen Gillan – will be elated when she finds out she’s going to be a mum and rushes to tell new husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) the good news.

However, his response isn’t what she expects and things turn sour when Rory starts to suspect the baby isn’t his, and immediately points the finger at the Doctor.

An insider explained: “Amy has been obsessed with the Doc ever since she met him as a child and started making her Raggedy Doctor dolls. She went off in the Tardis with him and left Rory behind.

“Rory is suspicious that maybe the pair got it on in the Tardis with before he finally married Amy. The Doc, of course, denies it’s him.”

However, the titular character – played by Matt Smith – won’t be the only person in the frame as the baby’s father.

Other potential daddies include painter Vincent Van Gogh – who Amy and the Time Lord met during the last series of the BBC One show when he became smitten with the flame-haired female – as well as a Dalek or even an evil Cyberman.

The source added to the Daily Star newspaper: “It leads to a big who’s the daddy plotline.”

Oh, Daily Star *laughy face*

Just a tiny question...
what are the chances Captain Jack will make an appearance in the new series?

I am curious as well. I think with Torchwood: Miracle Day going on it may be very slim. But I really want to see Jack interact with Matt Smith's Doctor.

I hope they do. It would be amazing to see.

I think it's possible. Miracle Days is supposed to be a bit of a reboot so they might ignore the fact that Jack left. They could satisfy the fans by doing a Who episode that deals with that and start the series off Fresh without having to worry about it.

I bought the Bluray for s5 and had a little marathon tonight. Some of these episodes are so much better on a second viewing. The two parter with the Angels is definitely in my top 5 of all time now

I just got caught up with the entire Matt Smith series. It's such amazing show. I love for so many reasons and it's honestly hard for me to fully articulate how I feel about it.

Since finishing the 5th series, I've introduced two of my friends to the show as well and they're huge fans.

I can't wait to watch the 6th series alongside you all.

I'm finally about to start the 5th series. Tenant's venture was great, got a bit bloated at the end with many returns and cameos I could've done without, but still it was overall great. I noticed that I'm always enjoying how Davies' build up to the finales much more than the finales themselves.

Anyhow, I have one question about the 4th series and one about the 5th:

4th: Why was Tenant so scared and depressed about his eventual death? If I didn't know any better I would've guessed that he was gonna die for good. I know how he mentioned that dying then regenerating still feels like someone new is taking his place while he's left to die (lol), but did that necessitate going around waving goodbye to all of his companions?

It honestly felt more like the writer and actor's farewell rather than the character himself. That is, unless I'm missing something.

5th: How's Smith and Moffat doing compared to the previous duo? the ratings don't look as healthy.

You pretty much nailed it. As much as I liked Tennant's goodbye, I felt they were doing a bit of a diservice to Matt's Doctor. It's the same character in new skin with a slightly altered attitude.

Smith and Moffat's run has been fantastic. You will not be disappointed. Fuck the ratings. They're not that bad anyways.

Tenant's popularity meant that they had to make a big deal with his departure. His fear comes from not knowing whether he'll regenerate or not, but also, as he explained, it feels like dying and "another man walks away". I like the justification for his fear, adds to the sadness and melodrama, then I feel happy again when Matt Smith makes his appearance.

The ratings for Series 5 were a tough thing to analyse because it was going up against The World Cup and one of the nicest summers Britain's had for a long time. It always seemed like the sun was shining when Doctor Who was on. The iPlayer ratings broke records though.

The way they're going to split Series 6 will be interesting to see how it affects ratings.

Doctor Who didn't win the best drama award at the National TV Awards that are on right now. Shame.

The writer took the approach that the doctor regenerating was him dying and someone taking his place, which I don't really agree with.

5th series is great, best yet i think. ratings were weird due to world cup and hot weather.

They had a long Doctor Who prologue to the National Television Awards tonight. Yes, I'm watching ITV. Don't judge me.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I'm really glad. I really liked almost everything he wrote during Davies' run, most notably Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead and The Girl in the Fireplace.
