I really don't think this is true. Moffat's had a reduced budget, and he and the team have still managed to make the show look a million bucks.

Also, the gap year came on RTD's watch.

Why has the budget been reduced when the show seems to be doing better than ever?

Julie fought tooth and nail to get the budget, Moff just accepted the cuts. With RTD/Julie we used to get two commentaries, one as a podcast, one on the DVD's, with Moff we don't even get them on every episode on the box set, and even then not every commentary track includes Moff.

Doctor Who Confidential? Gone. Behind the scenes features like lighting of Christmas lights, etc.? Gone.

The gap year was indeed on RTD's watch, but it was due to Ten wanting the time off, and to help oversee the handover of the production to Moff and let him get his stuff in order.

(Yes I know RTD wrote a ton of crap, even more crap versus good compared to Moff, but at least his team put the extra effort in)

Why has the budget been reduced when the show seems to be doing better than ever?

See above, no Julie, and the head of the BBC changed and knew he could screw around with Moff and cutback without any protest.

The gap year was devised as a way to pass over the torch between two different production teams. It's not really fair to drop the blame for that on anyone. It was also planned several years in advance, while I don't necessarily get the same impression from the current gap.

We might wind up getting more Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary in 2013, but it's just going to be a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. Getting more in 2013 after less in 2012 comes out to the same as if we had just gotten a normal amount in both years.

See above, no Julie, and the head of the BBC changed and knew he could screw around with Moff and cutback without any protest.

I don't think Moffat really deserves the blame for any of that. You're absolutely right about how instrumental Julie was, but I think the failing has been more on her replacements (initially Piers) than on Moffat. While Moffat's passion has been undeniable, the other producers and executive producers who have come on replacing Phil and Julie don't seem to have been anywhere near as effective.

Did they erase the Racknoss, Daleks at Canary Wharf, etc.? None of that was ever really resolved and it really bummed me out. AFAIK in the current Whoniverse no one has ever seen any sort of alien. Hopefully with the introduction of a new companion they'll go into this more, but who knows.

I'm pretty sure that anything along these lines is just silly fannon. Alien invasions have happened over and over again in Who and every time the show returns to people not knowing/caring. The cracks aren't a reason for that, it's just the way things are.

I think the crux of the problem is that I don't understand the bolded statement. It just doesn't make sense to me. The effects they caused are direct evidence. Basically, what's being implied is that everything that a now-"erased" person did happened and continued to have most effects, but certain very specific things which that person caused to be have been very selectively removed, those things been the specific chemicals in specific neurons of everybody's brain, any newsprint referencing the person or event, any specific reference in a book or on the Internet making mention thereof. But it still requires that people in history did the same things despite these words and memories no longer existing. Clive didn't obsess over the Doctor appearing all over history, but he still managed to do the same basic things and still died at the same exact time. Rassilon is (was, at that particular point) currently hanging around on Gallifrey, wondering why they're stuck in a time envelope and never got around to destroying the universe. Jenny and Susan are puttering around in their own home centuries, not actually wondering how they came to exist.

It just seems to require a massive suspension of disbelief several orders of magnitude greater than what this show (or almost any show in history that I can think of) typically has required in the past.

You're thinking too much. Seriously, stop before you hurt yourself.

See I've only seen two Torchwood seasons: Children Of Earth and Miracle Day. COE is one of the best tv one offs I've ever seen, well paced, tense, good writing, strong adult ethical dilemmas. Miracle Day lacked pacing and a strong overall plot but had it's moments. The ending was a bit derpy "here we go again" for my liking though.

Children of Earth is stellar.

I largely agree about Miracle Day falling short. It had a good premise, but the pacing was very off. I would have found Miracle Day more engaging if it had focused more on how the miracle effected society (something that was really more in the background for most of the series) and less on the CIA spy storyline. The episode about Jack's past was incredible television, though. I just wish the whole series could have been on that level.

Has this been mentioned?

8 hours left on this Othertees design. It's nice.

why is the flag in the background a design that hasn't existed since 1801?

Piers and Beth definitely have a lot to do with it, but I kind of feel that Moff should have more power, like RTD did, but doesn't, so while I do agree with you that Piers and Beth should both share the blame with Moff, he still has a lot to do with it.

Whether Moff just doesn't have the get er done personality, or that he hasn't been given the same sort of authority that RTD had, either way, I still judge the show and it's production based upon his actions (or lack thereof).

Because the Union Jack is a cultural icon people identify with. Like the Eagle for the U.S. and the Mounties for Canada?

Because the government have frozen the BBC's funding for a few years. The Tories hate the BBC. They regard it as some kind of left-wing propaganda station that's infested all the way through with communists, like woodworm. They're waiting for their chance before they can hack it to pieces, probably once they've finished with the NHS.

I know that, but the version of the flag on that t-shirt is the version that existed from the 17th century to beginning of the 19th.

Ah, well I'm sure most people outside of the U.K. won't notice the difference anyways. (And you can always use the excuse that The Doctor's been to the start and end of the universe!)

D: But I want this story about an immortal old man with a robot dog and a sexy supermodel whom he's completely uninterested in shagging who travels around in a blue phone booth with indeterminately large internal space that sometimes turns into a crazy woman to make seeeeeeeeeense!!!

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

It will make sense if you watch Season 6B while viewing both cases of the destruction of Atlantis while figuring out when the Unit era took place. As well as the origin of the Cybermen.

So what happens to all the money they make on Doctor Who merchandising and the US broadcast rights and all that stuff they probably don't make on any other BBC show? They can't re-invest it into more Who? They just pool it up to be used on another period drama or stuffy detective program?

I was thinking about that. But they initially came to existence without his influence. What he did as a result of his interference was to delay their rise by some number of centuries.

In the case of the Daleks, I do wonder if the Time Lords would have sent someone else instead - who decided that he did, in fact, "have that right".

I think that the poem that has been floating about Facebook for the past year or so pretty much succinctly represents how I feel about recent Who :

Roses are cars.
Violets are buckets.
This poem makes no sense.
Boobs.

She was decent but annoying in Emmerdale. Downgrade total.

See, that was my initial assessment, but then consider this: Emmerdale.

Name a character in that show who is anything more than competent. It's probably more the writers' fault than the cast.

Too bad it's not more of a Peri vibe from her in that photo. That's probably not her costume though, just something she was wearing for the shoot.

Yeah remember the early publicity photos of Matt Smith? And everyone was like "omg he's going to be so emo"?

Mass Internet-WTF. :lol

Moffat wanted him to look something like a pirate, Matt vetoed and went for his current look. I'd say he made a great choice.

Karen Gillan's first promo shot gave me a different impression compared to her actual appearance.

She certainly stayed away from plaid, but that's pretty close to me.
Being bigger than the TARDIS also has story implications I didn't see coming at the time.

Love how Amy and Rory are on that logo...but are only in five episodes. :/

Gonna miss them. But then I think I've made that pretty abundantly fucking clear.

No point keeping it secret when they've shown fans publically and cam copies are online?

They did that with the... was it the Comic Con trailer a few years ago? Annoyed me at the time.

Well, showing it period. I can somewhat understand because I believe there's a big con going on right now? With Matt and Karen there? But still.

Show a fucking scene from the western episode or something, but a trailer...what a way to fuck with people.

Season 4 might be my favourite. Rewatching with the kids and there are really 'kid scary' episodes like silence in the library, fun alternate future like turn left etc. And i think Donna is a great companion that really gets some emotional scenes.
