Doctor Who MMO announced!

Leading up to the San Francisco Game Developers Conference (GDC), BBC Worldwide today announced a major new partnership with game developer Three Rings to create BBC Worldwide's first ever free-to-play multiplayer online game centered around the blockbuster drama television show, Doctor Who.

For the first time ever, players from around the world will be able to follow in the footsteps of the eccentric and brilliant Doctor by travelling through time and space, exploring new worlds and encountering many alien races, both friend and foe. Titled Doctor Who: Worlds in Time, the game allows players to enter the TARDIS and be set a challenge by the mysterious Time Lord to help him defend civilized culture against infamous Doctor Who enemies.

Robert Nashak, EVP Digital Entertainment at BBC Worldwide says:

"Doctor Who: Worlds in Time will be a free-to-play multiplayer online game that invites players to save the universe by using their wits to solve time-bending puzzles and pulse-pounding challenges. Three Rings is the ideal team for this groundbreaking creative partnership. Not only are they visionaries in the online gaming space, they are lifelong Doctor Who fans with a passion for delivering the level of quality that our players will expect and deserve."

Daniel James, CEO Three Rings says:

"Three Rings is delighted and honored to have the opportunity to create an online game based on Doctor Who. Our goal with 'Words in Time' is to capture the imaginative spirit and depth of the series, whilst being fun and easy to play for all ages."

Doctor Who: Worlds in Time is developed to be both highly engaging and fun, allowing players to socialize and foster genuine cooperation, building a global community where fans worldwide will now be able to experience first hand the exciting action and adventure synonymous with Doctor Who. Development is well underway and is expected to launch later this year.

I'm a few episodes into the fourth season. Bringing the red head back? Serious? Terrible.

I was horrified after the christmas special, but she was a lot less annoying in the main season, oh and in Midnight she isn't in 98% of the episode.

That first Christmas Special with Donna was terrible. Not as bad as the Titanic one, but ugh.

I didn't mind her in Season 4. She was occasionally funny, and the Library episode has very little Donna. (b ' . ')b

Oh good, I thought maybe British people loved her or something. She is annoying, bossy and to top it off, weak. I'm sure it doesn't help that I find thick red heads nauseating. The exact opposite of the fantastic Martha Jones.

Just watched the first episode of the Centaurian Stratagem (or whatever it's called) and a couple things stuck out:
1. The Doctor's irrational fear of guns is growing into a phobia. I think he needs a shrink. Creatures have tried to kill him in countless ways with countless tools and methods (I can't think of any simple Earth gun occurrences) yet he is deathly afraid of a holstered pistol. Nutty.
2. The Doctor stared down the devil, annihilated countless races...but can't break a car window? Why is the twerp running around pointing a screw driver at the engine when he could save the old man simply by putting an elbow through the window?
3. Donna is the worst.

I loved her, though the Christmas episode had her freaking out way to much but they toned that down by a million in S4. I just liked the fact that the doctor was traveling with someone who didn't love him and fired quips right back at whoever they where speaking to instead of the doctor having all the funny lines. The dynamic was completely different than in S2 and 3 which I felt the show needed. Also I feel Tate was a better actress overall than Freeman.

I'm going to assume you mean Freema Agyeman and not Morgan Freeman and say that yeah, she was just pretty bad. No two ways about it.

Lol, yeah, and while I was afraid of putting it like you did, I still agree.

Thank you Lord of Who. If there isn't a threesome joke in there somewhere I'll make one in my head. Vividly.

Steven Moffatt put a joke about beards (that is, the euphemism, not the facial hair. Well, a bit of both) in Time Crash. I wouldn't bet against it.

Indeed, if Rory's in the episode, I think it's pretty much a certainty.

If Rory's in it, it should surely be a foursome joke.

Reason why I liked Martha, and wish she had been given better material was that she had the best story of the new Companions. Yes, she liked the Doctor, but what I liked about Martha was she was the only one of the new Who companions who wasn't running way from something to be with the Doctor.

To me she has seemed like the strongest of the bunch; intellectually and emotionally. Rose was clueless and Donna is bitter and brittle. While Freema didn't always pull it off, Martha the character seemed meant to be stronger and smarter.

I still like the teefury one better, but thought I'd point out this one too.

Also related to teefury, I'm very sad I missed the Stargate + Tardis shirt they had a few months ago. I would have worn the crap out of that shirt.

It, er, was. It just so happens that Paul McGann (of Eighth Doctor fame) looks rather similar to Roger Daltrey (of The Who fame). Hence it's excused him appearing in a Who/Who referencial thingie.

That is quite the coincidence. Also one I should've caught on to. :<

Needs to research more 'The Who'. @___@

I've finally finished watching the 5th series. Overall I'm loving Matt, some of the episodes had higher highs, while some lowers lows, especially compared to RTD's final season. I guess it's because I'm still on the fence about Amy/Gillian's performance, like I haven't decided yet whether I like her or not, and Rory and his role didn't win me over as well; I felt the dynamic was a reminiscent of Rose and Mickey, only done slightly better.

The opening of the season and finale were really solid and cohesive, I la la loved the weird bits where some of the Doctor's lines felt out of place only
only to be explained as his future self visiting Amy throughout the season and giving her bits of advice and encouragement.

There were a few standout episodes for me, the biggest being the Christmas Carol special, hands down one of my top 5 episodes of the new series. It literally combined everything I like about this show; sense of adventure, sci-fi with a side of fantasy, feel good but not too saccharine, right amount of whimsy, right amount of drama, and really really good acting and writing.

If it was a movie I'd gladly pay for a ticket and go out to watch it.

Edit: By the way, is it just me or did they retcon the fact that future/past self can't touch the present? it happened twice and the Doctor just stood there with nothing expository to say. It felt really odd.

Edit 2: wow, I'm looking at some of the Christmas Carol reviews and they seem overly negative lol, I guess it was too christmassy for some people.

Because I had to post it somewhere.... I've been noseying through game artist portfolios today, and accidentally stumbled upon this Dalek redesign. Its effectively fanart but pretty damn bizzare.

I'm glad they don't look like this, even if the art is well made and pretty unique.
Much better than the current Power Rangers look, imho.

Agreed. But I suppose it would be considered 'blasphemy' if they took the redesign that far.
They could combine the original look with some of the ideas from this one: make the lower metal sheets break into spider-looking legs and the head into this versatile design, just more mobility for maximum dread and menace.

Or, you know, just revert them back to their less-silly look.

Up till now the 'hero' Daleks have mostly been physical props and tend to show up in a much higher number of scenes than the other CG monsters as a result (they already payed for them after all).

A really funky Darlek design would either up the CG budget, or else get very limited screen-time. Big risk for a director that's already moving away from a completely iconic design.
