What always confused me the most about her is her familiarity with the Doctor: she didn't recognize tenant, she called him really young compared to the doctor whom she traveled with, but then greeted Smith without blinking or commenting on his appearance.

Ah, but she did recognise Tennant. Which, considering he never saw her again, doesn't really make sense.

Wibbly wobbly timey wimey!

Didn't she at some point say (or imply) that she has pictures of all the Doctor's regenerations?

Didn't she also say that Tennant looked younger than she was used to? I always thought that was weird cause Smith seems younger than Tennant.

Wasn't it said something like this was in her journal?

Oh my, I need to rewatch that episode again. I love Riversong but wrapping the mind around her timeline can be so much at times.

Timey wimey indeed.

That's what I was addressing, but the only possible explanation is that her first meeting with Smith is yet to come.

Well, she understands how The Doctor's regenerations work - and what order they're in. So, from her perspective, Ten appears younger than Eleven.

So we should keep Matt Smith around for a while to age him up some?

I was always wondering if it had to do with the casting of Smith being after this episode. Wasn't the plan to have an older Doctor for the 11th? And they decided on Matt and he is sort of playing an older Doctor in a younger body?

You're right, that was the original plan and may have factored into the dialogue. Still, it works when you consider 10 is technically younger than 11 and that River would perceive him as such when she consults her notes.

Timey Wimey, Wibbly Wobbly.

Generally speaking, I believe The Doctor has grown younger as he's regenerated. I mean, we've gone from Hartnell (the 'young' Doctor) to Smith (the 'old' Doctor). Though I did always like the idea of Paterson Joseph as The Doctor, which was heavily rumoured for a while:

ages of actors on their Who debut:

William Hartnell - 55
Patrick Troughton - 46
Jon Pertwee - 50
Tom Baker - 40
Peter Davison - 29
Colin Baker - 40
Sylvester McCoy - 44
Paul McGann - 36
Chris Eccleston - 41
David Tennant - 34
Matt Smith - 27

Interestingly (or geekily), William Russell was 39 in the first series of Doctor Who and was the oldest companion in the classic series (depends if you count the Brig or not, Nic Courtney was 39 when he first appeared).
In the new series, we've had Jack (38), Donna (38), and of course Wilf (79).

If you're talking *character* ages, then I shamelessly cheat and offer you Romana!

Yeah that's what I always thought she meant. Not young in terms of how he actually physically looks, but in terms of his regenerations. So the first Doctor is the youngest, and the eleventh is currently the oldest even though he looks the youngest.

Timey wimey. I love Moffat because he makes my brain hurts when I think about all his time shenanigans.

There were a few older actors on the rumor lists, including David Thewlis (Lupin in Harry Potter). I really would have loved to see him in the role.

I was about to say that Gary Oldman plays Professor Lupin but no, that makes no sense at all, does it? He plays Sirius Black.

Know who I always thought would make a great Doctor? Dominic West, best known for playing Jimmy McNulty in The Wire:

In reality, he's the poshest, most well-spoken Englishman you could ever hope to come across. That or Russel Tovey, who's said to have been RTD's choice for Eleven. I do like Russel Tovey.

I like Tovey too, but his over-exaggerated enunciation (ref. Being Human) becomes grating after a while.

I agree Thewlis would have been great. He projects an earnest gravitas that would have suited the role.

Saying all that, Matt Smith is my second favourite Doctor, after the legendary Tom Baker.

The logo was stretched to fit the different aspect ratio, but the live action didn't seem to be - I guess they were going for that Nixon 60's/70's feel and wanted a film-like ratio.

Anything that isn't the Daleks, man. Anything that isn't the Daleks.

I liked it, though I'm getting perhaps a bit much of an "Empty Child" vibe from it.

I did as well. But "Empty Child" was fantastic, so I am fine with it having a similar vibe.

I thought that prequel was quite creepy except
the alien wasn't behind him.

I think that might be the point.

As for the iconic image? I'm going to guess at
Matt Smith sitting in the chair of the Oval Office
