It's sad that almost nobody is playing this on steam fuck gamepass

I'm playing this - still early, with auto sprint and slow projectiles it feels VERY much like an evolution of the OG doom games it's crazy

The fact that people are bitching about the most meaningless shit is hilarious. The game is sick

Loving dismembering those demons so far. I don't know why they tacked on so much story, it's just head off in that direction and kill everything you see.

Things I'd like to change:
- I've turned off the screen border effects, but I still have to see low health warning at 50% and critical health at 30%. Shut up, game, 'tis but a scratch.
- Sprinting is pointless. I always want to move fast, but auto sprint has a slight delay before it kicks in, and you still don't sprint when moving sideways.
- Bodies evaporate almost instantly, when I want to see the mess I've made.
- Bright green for things you can parry looks a bit out of place. I can see why it's there (and I wish they had it in Expedition 33) but it doesn't fit the overall aesthetic.
- Wish you could splatter the humans too.

What a damn fine game though.

This game is good so far.

Too much story and cutscenes though.

Kinda surprised at the lack of criticism of the forced film grain filter on console. Game plays just fine, but that damn filter really mutes the visuals. Needs a toggle. I can only assume most PC players are turning that shit off immediately.

I've only done the first chapter. It's been a while since I played 2016 and I fell off of Eternal a few chapters in, but the impact and weight of the weapons feels off. The early vibes I'm getting are very similar to how I felt about Quake 4.

Quake Inspired Items
Power Gauntlet - Quake 3
Shredder - Quake Nailgun
Impailer - Quake Super Nailgun
Super Shotgun - Quake
Grenade Launcher - Quake
Rocket Launcher - Quake

This might be a stretch, but the chainshot seems like the railgun and the cycleshot looks like the original nailgun but with plasma.

Cosmic Baron looks like the fiend and the shambler combined
Hell Knight is in

Gothic Churches and Cosmic Realm with Cthulhu

Love it. This game is Quake at heart.

Yeah, the guns in particular don't have the heftiness I want. But the shield and other new mechanics do, and I guess that's intentional to maybe make you gravitate towards those.

But I'm only like 4 chapters in, so I'm gonna guess that we get some dope guns later on.

The game feels extremely arcade-y, which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing. The moment-to-moment gameplay isn't as specific as it was in Eternal (which I was not a fan of), but has a bit more structure than 2016. Again, not sure if I'm a fan of that or not yet.

But at least the basics like controls and gunplay are great so far. The parry/green attack mechanic is so heavy-handed at this point that it's a bit off-putting, but I feel like I'll grow to like it after dialing in the difficulty a bit. (Coming from Clair Obscur, it's wild how generous the window is for the parry, so I definitely need to refine that lol)

One thing's for certain, and definitely disappointing: the music. It's just not nearly as good as 2016 or Eternal, straight fact.

Still, any Doom is good Doom. Happy to have it.

While I will not argue against the latest trilogy being good games, I don't really care for them as Doom games. They certainly have some of the DNAA, but the insistence on collectables and upgrades just slows the pace down too much for my liking.

Finished chapter 3. Woof!

- hate the story. It's DOOM, I don't need a story
- I maxed the music volume in the options as it's way too low default
- the music straight up sucks ass anyway and doesn't play near often enough but it's better than no music
- how is there no glory kills? Come on!
- I wish this was Eternal 2 instead

- love how fast you move, I was scared of all the talk about slowing it down
- good gore system although bodies disappear way too quick
- skippable cutscenes are great
- graphics are ok but pretty soft looking default on series x

Yeah I agree with that completely. Dark Ages, especially, has too many moments that grind the pacing to a halt so far. But also, the gunplay is great, so I'm kinda split.

Maybe don't release a short, single-player game at 80 fucking euros. :goog_relieved:

Clair Obscur was just 50€ and in a way more niche genre and it did much better.
I would never say "fuck Gamepass" cause if you wanna buy it, buy it. I don't regret getting the collector's for the cool statue, just because I love DOOM so much. But it's wild to think about the price I paid for a game that I beat in 15 hours and provides nothing else for me after I beat it since I'm not into collecting things.

That's exactly how I'd describe 2016 as I thought the moment to moment action was great, but I never cared for the finishers or the mechanics for recovering ammo and health. The amount of collectables in that game was also annoying and some levels had points of no return that forced you to replay to collect everything and collecting was important to the upgrades.

Runs extremely well on my PC, highest settings, very nice.
But I'm not hooked on the gameplay unfortunately. Only played one level but it didn't click for me. Maybe I need to increase the difficulty idk.

30k concurrent players is not "almost nobody"…

But just get Gamepass and stop complaining. Are you still buying DVD boxes for TV show seasons too or are you using Netflix etc like most other people?

I would never buy a DOOM game, certainly not at full price, because 1st person shooters isn't my thing. But now I can at least try it, with no loss. Sometimes you just go it quick and leave but sometimes you find something you truly enjoy and stick around longer or even til the end. It's like having full size demos. Can't complain about that.

Combat is still awesome. But might shelve it for a bit till they patch in a fix on hdr and patch it for pro. Annoying how soft it looks.

There are already lots of videos and posts on boards explaining or asking how to change the language... It is a big miss on Id Software part, really this is annoying...

What a damn fine game though.

This kind of stuff pisses me off. My dream as a kid of future gaming was permanent bodies and blood. This was my gripe with eternal and 2016, the areas would look amazing if they left the chaos lying around. I was hooked ever since Resident Evil kept the bodies.
This is be a STANDARD setting like ground foliage draw distance.

id has abandoned us. There is no option to disable upscalers and use 4xMSAA, as God intended.

Trying for Ultra at 1080p on a 7800x3D and 6750xt. Native ofc

not sure if this works in Dark Ages, but in Eternal typing r_antialiasing 0 into the console would disable AA completely. from there you could in theory supersample (not sure what AMD calls the option... if they have it)

but given that you run this on a 6759xt, not sure if even MSAA would run smooth, let alone super sampling lol.

Alright, just beat mission 11 so I'm officially midway through the game. All my previous critiques still stand but so does my praise. The fact is that AAA, single player FPS' are rarer than hen's teeth nowadays and the action of DOOM has always been amongst the very best, it's no different here.

While I still feel the previous two games were superior I do applaud them for trying something new, DOOM has never been afraid to mix things up (none more so than DOOM 3) and I hope that trend continues. Keep exploring new ideas and trying something different, I'll be there to support it.

Yo, i remember playing Quake 3 the whole night back in the days on Nightmare at a friends house and just obliterating the map.
Now Doom TDA gets me the same vibes as Quake 3 just with better graphics and better gameplay. It's awesome honestly.

I'm in the same boat. The game looks like it's running at 720P on my ps5 pro at best, and the hdr, even after doing the recommended shit on videos looks bad.

2 levels down and I do enjoy the combat especially in a longer encounter on nightmare difficulty. It flows well and chains plenty together to feel dynamic and impactful.

Coming off of playing kingdom come 2 and Clair 33 this game looks like base ps4 graphics on a pro and I can't be bothered when eternal looks better than this by a mile so far.

I finished like 5 chapters and this is really not my cup of tea loved doom 2016 and eternal but this doesn't even feel like a first person shooter this feels like a shield parry first then gunplay especially on nightmare difficulty.
Eternal has a rythm to it in combat
This is all parry parry shield throw on ur face all the time.
Also I honestly believe removing glory kills was a bad idea

You can get some more animated glory kill animations in this but I agree that if you didn't want to play as captain America then this game isn't going to resonate combat wise.

I'm going to try the pc gamepass version tomorrow maybe to see if it looks better there compared to console and what performance I can get on a 3080 on 4k. Dlss balanced perhaps could net me 60 fps?

I don't care what digital foundry said— there's no way this is running at above 1080p. It really is that blurry. I can't make out any details to enemies unless I'm 2 feet away…

Glory Kills would be just tedious with the amount of enemies on screen.
Also they are trying something new and it works so i don't miss Eternal. When i wanna play Eternal style i play Eternal this is something new.
But i understand if you don't like it, to each their own.
Anyways i don't really dig the machine gun in this one, every other weapon is fire. Especially the Skull Crusher gun.

This is like sekiro in first person view where I feels like guns come 2nd
Shield comes first and foremost
The flying red and green projectiles coming towards u all the time feelscjust out of place for some reason

My first impressions after a few hours (early game):

  1. Graphics - it looks better than the previous Doom, but honestly, nothing mind-blowing. Ray tracing is supposedly always on, but you can barely tell. Maybe that's for the best - Doom is such a fast-paced game that you hardly notice visual details anyway. ;)
  2. Optimization - really solid. I'm playing at 1440p, everything maxed out, no upscaler, and I'm getting a stable 60+ FPS with zero drops or stutters.
  3. Gunplay - as always, fantastic. It's chunky, responsive, and super satisfying. No complaints here.
  4. The shield - a pleasant surprise. At first I thought it would slow things down, but it actually makes combat even faster. You can charge enemies, block, parry projectiles, and even throw it at enemies. It adds some light strategy and variety to the fights.
  5. Feels more like Doom 2016 than Eternal - and that's a good thing. No annoying platforming sections this time, which is a huge plus for me.
  6. The mech and flying dragon-mech segments - they were fine as a one-off, but I really hope there's not much more of that. Doom works best when it sticks to ground-level demon-slaying chaos.:messenger_smiling_horns:
  7. Music - easily the biggest downside so far. No Mick Gordon, and you can feel it. Instead of iconic riffs, it's some generic "angry metal" noise that just lacks energy and character. It's not terrible, but it doesn't elevate the gameplay like before.
  8. No glory kills? I don't miss them at all. In Eternal, they were pretty much mandatory on higher difficulties. Here, I don't feel like I need them - ammo hasn't been an issue, and the combat flow actually feels smoother without those constant cutaway animations.
So far, it's been a solid experience, though not everything clicks perfectly.

The combat is just unbelievable, exceptionally well made game I even find myself reading on the lore which is something the privous games never made me do, an excellent game.

I am having a completely different reaction to big fights in this compared to Eternal.

I used to be exhausted but pleased after big battles in Eternal.

In Dark Ages I mostly feel like ….

But I'm not hooked on the gameplay unfortunately. Only played one level but it didn't click for me. Maybe I need to increase the difficulty idk.
Ultra Violence is minimum feasible difficulty in this game.

Game just doesn't activate on lower difficulties IMO.

I couldn't imagine playing Ultra Violence or Nightmare with a Game Pad. Is it really possible to beat the game with a game pad?
I'm all M&Kb for this.
Also when Path Tracing, gimme the Path Tracing, ID.
Will the console versions also have Path Tracing?
Edit: Seems like no Path Tracing for consoles.

I'm playing on a controller, fourth difficulty level ('Nightmare') - no big deal. I die here and there, but luckily checkpoints are every few steps, and sometimes I use those reviving stones.

Nightmare, really? I'm baffled. Respect.
I guess as long as you don't play like this.

Played it for around two hours yesterday. It just feels right, you know. I'm a casual Doom fan: except the first two I never replayed any of the games and usually play in short bursts, but I always appreciated that they are trying new things with each new game. And while my memory of 2016 and Eternal is vague and can't really compare them, this feels fresh.

Oh… I went with second lowest lol
I thought it fit me going by the description and my lacking experience in shooters. But that was easy peasy, first level. Didn't find all secrets though but had no issues keeping my health up.

as a completionist, love when a game has clearly marked points of no return, except when it has other unmarked points of no return in between the marked ones

Get by with it just fine in Horizon 5. Certainly have the headroom for it in Doom Eternal. I'm up to level 5 in TDA and haven't run into anything that looks like a generational leap from those. Hell even the GTA V ray tracing update nets me 4xMSAA without getting anywhere close to sub 60fps.

Is it me or did they mess up the scaling of the Doomslayer and the world/characters? When you stand next to some regular human knights he is tiny! It's all the more egregious as he sounds like a giant when stomping around at full speed and his landing sounds like a friggin' earthquake lol.

The Makyrs are launching the world's heaviest midget?

I think the reason is that the slayer isn't standing straight, he's probably in a combat position, which makes him slightly bent

Alright i played two more levels and now i'm punching big fucking demons with a mech, haha i didn't like the first level but yeah this is much better

I'm surprised no one had brought up painkiller as a comparison. The engagements feel similar. Large spaces and tons of enemies and sprawling rectangular level design.

The actual combat is different from anything else, even Doom.

I like it. The first mini boss character riding that demon flowed really well for me and you're essentially taking on an army in that fight.

The game runs flawlessly. I'm on max settings using a 4080 laptop 1440p and it never dips below 120fps.
