Doom The Dark Ages Steam CCU peaked at 31,470

I am playing there too. 🤷‍♂️

Could have sold more if not on gamepass too. I played that there. 🤷‍♂️

Man I'm a casual, I've never got into souls-like games or competitive FPS or anything, but I enjoyed the hell out of Eternal. I liked it a lot more than Doom 2016z It's weird because on paper it sounds like the kind of game I'd give up on after 45 minutes.
I wouldn't call you a casual but I get what you mean. I do think the game was too intense for the average player, generally speaking — and Dark Ages is kinda more of the same, though less intense as far as what you have to manage during combat.

  1. Game costs AUD$120.00 digitally while its available on Game Pass
  2. Following on from the polarised reception to Doom Eternal
  3. Requires an RT-capable GPU
I guess it adds up to make it a smaller release. While I expect that on PC, Game Pass has eaten some of Steam's market, I'm sure it's just not as big as Eternal was, which was riding the hype following GOAT-ed 2016.

I haven't jumped in yet - trying desperately to clear some of my backlog before I do - but when I do, I'll be doing on Game Pass.

Clair Obscur's been out for almost a month and it's out-grossing Doom right now.
HOW EMBARRASSING!

Maybe the game isn't as good some people imagine. The shot-shot-glorykill combat rotation grew tiresome to me.

Speaking for myself.

I'm not into the bullet hell for babies vibe it seems to give off or the parrying system.

Shame. Doom 16 was quality. Really enjoyed Eternal too. But 16 was still better, bar the demon designs.

I played a bit last night on PC Gamepass and I just want to shoot things. But instead it dumps all these combo mechanics on me and I tuned out pretty quick. Is this Doom or some snowboarding game where wheeee I'm going trix.

A lot of the people who played it came out saying it was inferior to Eternal and that it had a weak soundtrack and an even weaker story

Why the Mandatory Ray Tracing? The game gains nothing from it as it looks almost identical to static lighting but performs worse

Sucks to see, but again weird that they'd cluster these games so close together, because I'm not seeing a ton of stuff in summer where Doom could've faired better with space.

Half-way through the campaign of Dark Ages so far, and I like it more than Eternal. Eternal was too much of an amped up 2016 experience, and this makes more fundamental changes to the combat system to keep encounters interesting for me. The only downgrade is the music, Mick Gordan is missed.

The kicker is Dark Ages runs on the same engine as Eternal as far as I know. So not sure why RT is needed.

Doesn't look that much better than Eternal while running magnitudes worse.

And I played Eternal on a laptop GTX 1060. :goog_relieved:

It's horrifically optimized on PC, just wait 6 months to a year it'll be cheaper then too. Even though id is still a great dev, they deserve this treatment

Why would they put this on game pass day 1? I'll buy it later this year on sale but if it was on some monthly sub on playstation I'd sub for a month, beat it, unsub and never play it again.

Isn't particularly bad - same ballpark as 2016. I'm playing on PC gamepass though.

Kinda funny to think that they started marketing this one as a "return to the roots".
God knows what 'Roots' they've been seeing :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I swear, even if they'd somehow got Brutal Doom in the mainstream, it'd see double those numbers..

I'm just hoping the new Painkiller doesn't crap the bed.

I think its pretty gross to judge games based off these kind of metrics and even sales for that matter. Either a game is decent fun or its not. There has been lots of great games with poor sales over the years. IDK if doom is one of these as it wouldn't run on bazzite so i refunded it. but just in general i find it gross.

Got Gamepass but didn't even download the game. And I'm even a massive fan of DOOM, old and new. Not sure how to explain it...

I loved Doom 2016, Doom Eternal not so much, don't really have any interest in this one, I'm sure loads will love it, just not for me.

I loved all the worried souls everytime a gamepass title only does well on gamepass.

But but mah tango, broken record for last 7 years now.

Game plays great hopefully we get Quake up next but.

yikes that's horrible, i think they pissed off too many people with eternal, so now those don't give this one a chance.

Or more like the people who loved Eternal saw this one as a step in the wrong direction.

That was my case at least. :goog_relieved:

Let me use you as a example, if you allow it

- That's exactly why 'gamepass users' (just like PS Plus users, whatever this exists as a metric) should not be used as a reliable metric. Here we have a example of an user that tried and did not like a game... but since the game was played via GP, he can be counted as a user to paint a success metric. I already tried some games on PS Plus and uninstalled them in less than a hour because I hated them (in my case, FF XV and Fallout 4)
I guess it depends on how that works on the backend between ms and pubs. If a user playing a game no matter how long gets the pub paid then it should count if doesnt then it shouldnt.

xcloud had been a godsend to try iffy games 1st instead of downloading 100gb for a shitty game.

No surprises here.

The game is on gamepass and people already know that the game is at least "different" in comparison to Eternal (I havent play it, so I wont say if it is good or bad). Why spend so much money on something that you dont know if you are going to enjoy if you can just get it on game pass and call it a day?

This is not a failure to MS tho (the big corpos, not talking about the devs), just like how they planned it.

Not my game.

There is a secret thing everybody knows. Reviewers would suck Doom's dick for free. If this game didn't crack 90 it probably sucks in at least one major way. Top that off with me being pretty meh on the last one and knowing this game didn't stick to any nostalgia I might have had and it's no sale. Gamespass and the price are just the final nail in the coffin for The Dark Ages. Most probably feel this way. Super apathetic on most western games right now too, so it's a perfect storm. Boomer campaign shooters are also becoming a novelty for me. I bet Borderlands 4 way outperforms this. Gamepass is a sales killer unless your cod or goty, that is also true.

It's a little bit of both. Dark Ages is the perfect Gamepass game because it's only 15hrs. You can sub for a month, play it and unsub.

I also think there is only so much ID can do to make the game feel vastly different from prior Dooms. Dark Ages is very hit or miss with the new changes. Doom 2016 is still arguably the best modern Doom game. Which just goes to show that the franchise has somewhat stagnated. ID has a shitload of talent. I would really like if they tackled a new genre completely, like what Machine Games did with Indiana Jones

Their mistake is trying to make Doom feel different. It's Doom. People want Doom to feel like Doom. Imagine if they tried to make Call of Duty vastly different from prior Call of Duty games, there would be riots in the streets. I don't understand why they keep making Not Doom instead of Doom when the game is named Doom

they don't even need to change genres. I'd be happy with them putting Doom back on the shelf for a while on getting on some Quake shit. And bring back Reznor for the OST.

People don't want to spend 70$ for the same game they played 4-5 years ago. Even for yearly games like COD or NBA 2k there are changes to the gameplay loop to try and make each release feel distinct

I think ID has done a decent job trying to mix it up rather than copy and paste prior Dooms. And it's not like most people don't like Dark Ages. All three of the modern Dooms have a strong fanbase that enjoys the gameplay changes. I respect ID more for trying to evolve, even if it doesn't always work

Gonna wait till I can get it for around $50, I want to play it but I got a lot of stuff I need to catch up with at the moment. Looks really fun though.

Bad word of mouth will do that. The vibe shift once long form gameplay vids started being released was palpable. Probably break even and fall short of being a hit.

Also, when you RTX only a game you exclude most of the southern hemisphere and Eastern Europe.

Was originally gonna get this game on PS5 but once I found out that the game isn't on the disk i decided to sub to PC gamepass for a month. Enjoying it a lot, not as much as eternal but the shield is fun.

That's why I don't understand the obsession with threads like this, especially with an IP like DOOM.

Both 2016 and Eternal weren't favorited by every person, and they were still very successful. I'm sure TDA will be too.

That's the thing, I got the collector's edition because I'm a huge DOOM fan, I did it with the last two games, so of course I was doing it for this one. I'll very likely do the same with Quake whenever that happens, too. Because the IPs mean a lot to me. But if I didn't care that much, you can bet I would've just played on Game Pass. Honestly, if you're not some hardcore DOOM fan I'd recommend anyone do the same, especially if you're not one to replay campaigns, get all the collectibles, etc. I beat the campaign just shy of 16 hours and don't plan to revisit it until the DLC is released. I'm sure some people won't be too happy about that with its price tag. I enjoyed the game and have no regrets, but I do wish there was more content for someone like me to come back to, but there just isn't. At least not right now.

It's abundantly clear regarding how folks here feel about Game Pass and Xbox/Microsoft as a whole. But Doom The Dark Ages will be just fine, I'm sure.
