Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Just a quick reminder that you can switch weapons while in battle via the "items" menu, so you can switch, say, between a sword and a whip on the fly.

I keep forgetting that this is possible. Awesome feature, and doesn't even cost a turn! Just make sure the weapons you want are actually on the character.

I'm having a really nice time with this. I feel like learning Bang early on speeds up the game tremendously, which is a huge plus. It makes me wonder why there are so deliberate time wasters though, like walking through 3 or 4 map transitions and through the overworld back and forth a few times in a row. This is a minor gripe though.

Also I'm very impressed with the enemy models and animation. Does anyone know if these models were made specifically for this version or perhaps sourced from DQM games?

At the very beginning, our hero and the prince were next to a stone entrance. Will I get more explanation later what was it about? They don't seem to mention it so far.

You sure do!

How far are you. They might have already mentioned it.

Ballymolloy is Irish though, the innkeeper even says "top o'the mornin"

Not only that, they use Irish Gaelic a couple of times.

Fourth party member get. The boos got a little hairy when he focused fired on Maribel and almost killed her in one turn, but I prevailed.

I though for a second I might actually be stockpiling money, then I got to the new continent and it all went down the drain.

That boss was one of the few that actually got heavily nerfed in the remake. In the original version, the cave he is in has an anti-magic barrier in it, which means that you cannot use spells at all. But Maribel also used to have an ability called imitate that would basically mimic any attack that hit her, which made that boss a lot easier if you knew to use it.

Is it better to play the slots or lucky panel in the first casino? Is it worth trying to get some of the items out of it, I don't seem to be very good at lucky panel lol.

Also, prayer rings, are they an infinite mp restore item or does it have a chance to break?

Why can't i call my character with my own name "Florian".
I can use "FLORIAN" but not "Florian". The game didn't accept that at the start. (french version)
Is there already a character in the game with this name ?

It's the first time it's happening to me in a game.
Grrrr, i hate caps for my character's name.

Wish there was a "heal all using just items" shortcut in the misc menu. Stocking up on herbs is easy and cheap and MP is much, much more valuable in the long dungeons.

Thankfully healing spells are pretty cheap, though.

I have DQM2 on my Japanese 3DS and the models are definitely not as good in that.

There aren't a lot of good rewards from lucky panel, especially not from the one at the first casino. There are a couple of useful staves though.

Prayer rings always have a chance to break, just like every other DQ.

My memory of the original must be failing me because I didn't remember that at all.

Use Zoom bro what are you doing

That said this game does have big sections between hen you can battle and when you can't. They seem to be trying to balance this by having monsters EVERYWHERE when they're actually around, but man it can get on my nerves sometimes haha.

Rengenstein was over fast lol.

Yeah I just finished it too haha. Man, some of these stories are DARK. I always forget that Dragon Quest doesn't pull punches. It's cute aesthetic and charming setting kind of makes moments like that hit harder too.

Well, I had just gotten through the first dungeon / boss area and was having a blast...then I hit the power button accidentally and hadn't saved at all ( I usually only save if I switch games or plan on stopping for a long time ).

That won't happen again.

I was expecting a happy ending but nope,
everyone's fate was sealed and the hopeless island remained hopeless
. I do like that, it makes things way less more predictable.

Spoilers for later:
there's an island later on where depending on your choices it remains hopeless and destroyed or survives to the present. Probably my favorite one in the game.

This is my first Dragon Quest and I'm loving it so far. Always thought DQ had the superior artstyle compared to FF. Finished the second island and can't wait to play more.
This really IS a great game and I find all characters likeable and enjoyable, especially Prince Kiefer.

57 minutes to get back to the first battle / end prologue time time. Skipping talking to people an knowing where to go shaved time off sure but still pretty lengthy for a fetch quest. This time around Pike didn't give me "holy" water. Do dialogue choices actually make some small differences in this game?

Well mind you, I've only just entered it. The chicken selling you items makes me laugh. I've yet to move forward from that point. Now you've got me expecting a sad story!
It's not as sad as the other islands that are stab-you-in-the-heart sad, but has some feels.

What did they do different in Regestein/Dialec in the remake? I played through it but it seemed mostly the same?

You used to be able to interact with every statue in the town and get a story about what they were doing just before the gray rain. It was well done, and it being cut down to just barebones was pretty bad.

I nearly got destroyed near Faraday by a random enemy (the robot one). I haven't had any problems with difficulty until now.

I'm finding the game very similar to DQ6, but with a less prominent main storyline. I hope it kicks off later in the game, as right now it feels like we are just dealing with concrete problems and nothing actually important. The
hint at a maleficent force working in the shadows
during the last vignette makes me hopeful that a main threat will be present later on.

It feels like Automatonville emphasizes how badly this game is padded sometimes - there are so many pointless stops you have to make. The worst is probably having to stop by the town on your way to the enemy base just to talk to the commander so he can say "Ok, we're moving out now!"

...especially when its so easy to overlevel in this version of the game, where it's like, ok I could literally fight my way through that dungeon without the plot device's help.

There is a main threat and it kicks in later, but DQ7 is an extension of what DQ6 started, and the star of the game is the vignettes by far.

I've beaten the first bosses and got the boat. So far pretty fun, hard to see how it'll sustain for a hundred hours though.

That island's past and present storylines both definitely had far too much of this stuff.

Minor story spoilers?:

Captain Goodwinding: I can't guarantee your safety.

Autonymus: I wouldn't want you to, we all know how that goes.

That part was probably to force you to visit Frobisher after
it gets ransacked
, no? I went there when I first recruited the Captain but it seemed optional to do the detour (and I'm glad that I did).

Is this a good first DQ?

Also, I'm okay with the length of the game I think but it's unlikely I'll be playing through the whole series because I can't really sink huge amounts of time into a lot of games. So it's more of an either/or question than a "which should I play first" question. I mean, I miiiiight play DQ8 when it comes out on 3DS (or a few months after), but unlikely I'll go back to other games.

That said, if there's another DQ game for DS or something that's a much better game I might play that instead of this.

That sucks. You could only see the lives of 2-3 here.

Mech Continent saved. That boss was a little touch and go there. Still tough like I remember from the original game.

Inching closer to class unlocks. Can't wait for those possibilities to open.

Edit: Also, it is nice that the dungeon clears itself of enemies after beating the boss.

I wonder what's up with this shrine on the East of the "robot island", I suppose it'll be important.

The next place has more
people turned into rock. Time to solve the mystery?

I don't know, I might have to disagree.

EVERY STATUE? That's just boring.
