Alright! I finally have access to the vocations!

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Hahah, I happened to read about this, which is why I'm hanging out in the casino for now, trying to get better equipment. Read that particular dungeon is really hard, or at least was in the original.

Whoever decided to add a shuffle card to the memory game - fuck you

FUCKING HELL

I just spent an ENTIRE HOUR looking for a "dungeon" in a castle (not naming stuff to not spoil anything). After a lot of running around I come across this door:

z2SzMmP.png

There are stairs leading down, so I obviously assume that this is where a "dungeon" could be. Now, how do I get to that lever? The door is firmly looked, so it must be inacessible from this side, right?

So I run around the whole castle looking for a way to reach these stairs from the other side. Maybe the waterway is leading to some kind of underground segment? Like, with a raft like earlier in the game? No, no chance.

Maybe the dungeon is in the other town? No.

Searching the web for a map. Again, nothing. Even the official guide on the Nintendo website mentions nothing.

Then I accidentially hit one of the shoulder buttons.

There was a lever on the opposite side the entire time.

This is my new personal "y cant metroid crawl?" moment. Trolled by the camera. Finally I can continue. (The whole story segment really is dragging on enough as it is.)

Well the shuffle card is really the only thing that can keep you from winning. If you reveal it on your 6 free turns your chance of winning generally seems to be greater than 50%

Heh, I suppose you're right. Haven't found it once with the free turns yet, though.

I did win my first round on the third try and got some really nice stuff for the hero from it. Think I'm gonna play this for a while lol.

So if I've done the events on the
Volcano Island
how long before jobs etc start being available? Really enjoying the game so far, bar the laborious back and forth.

Ok, in Emberdale for the festival
I got to that tea but and immediately went to party chat... and Kiefer's suspicious about it and "wonders what is in it." Makes me half wonder if they tried to mask it in the original, but even if not it's kind of amusing the localization to turn around and go "who are kidding, we're not fooling anyone anyway."

EDIT: And I see that
'tea' is offered to the minors. That probably would make SE alone go "whoa, we're not going to go there now."

Just played through the opening...I wouldn't have credited it, but they somehow managed to make it worse. They cut down a bit of the old back and forth fetching, but then added new even worse fetching and removed the only good bit about the original opening, the ruin puzzles.

Oh and I just met Matilda (or I guess Maeve now), and she has an accent. Joy. :/

Didn't start the game yet, but seen that there are streetpass features on the box.
Can I skip that and not use them? Or are they fun/interesting/important?

Pretty much completely optional, think treasure maps from DQ9. You find and send tablets to open up mini-dungeons (remixes of existing maps.) You can take part without the streetpass portion as well.

Nice... Faraday Cage you got there. *snicker*

I have now just finished a certain architectural marvel. Time is on my side. :)

I am getting ever increasingly anxious about that
4th & 5th party member. I don't want to accidentally crazy overlevel and max rank too many Vocations without them. :(

Here's a good tip for everyone: hitting the Y button in town gives you access to all the shop lists in that town. It'll be on the bottom screen and you can cycle through them with Y.

Thanks a lot for the quick answer! Will probably skip that then :)

I think I got very lucky with the slots. Won 3000 tokens in like 5 minutes, then nothing. Like, absolutely nothing lol.

Guess I'll stick to the memory game.

Got the money I needed for the second boomerang from a seemingly optional but not really optional cave. Yay for not spending time grinding.

It's been great reading everyone's impressions and the overwhelming effect some vignettes have on their playthrough.

I always held DQ7 in a special place of my fond memories because it is one of those rare games where a sequence of dialogue can happen and you literally freeze up and don't move for a while while the somber music continues to play softly as the truth is laid bare. But there are also genuine moments of happiness too, so everything is counter-balanced well.

It's a wild ride of emotions.

Can't wait to get back home later this evening and start downloading it to play throughout the night.

About 6 hours in so far and loving it but why couldn't that have given N3DS or CPP support for the camera? Using the shoulder buttons to move the camera feels gross. It was fine on the DS but I really wish I could use my second analog stick instead of L + R

Dialac is so much shorter now. :( I already knew it had been shortened, but I didn't know by how much. It was one of my favorite stories in the game so it kinda hurts. :(

Yeah, I hate what they have done to the intro. :(

I don't like the accents either. I've gotten used to them now though.

I love that part of the game.

I got to my first battle at last (~2ish hours). I spent a lot of time checking out dialog changes with Kiefer in the party which was kind of fun. Glad that the fetch quest beginning is finally over.

I'm still not used to the camera controls. I keep expecting the buttons to change the landscape itself, not the pan of the front of the camera. It catches me by surprise every time. I also can't tell you how many times I've accidentally gone back a screen instead of progressing forward due to the camera orientation not resetting itself. Going to be a long battle with this one.

Using L trigger to confirm is nice. It would be nicer if they made ZL cancel so you could completely play one-handed. Maybe if it sells well we can get a CPP or N3ds patch.

I remember that. Good times. I also remember the can't win fight soon afterwards that I tried my best to win and wasted a lot of herbs on.

Tapping L+R at the same time resets the camera orientation. It might help a little. I'd highly suggest spending an extended period of time playing with each of the two camera styles as well to figure out which one works better for you, though it really only affects the world map.

Herb Continent complete. One more continent to do before I get to Alltrades Abbey and the casino. Then my progress grinds to a halt.

Don't stop now!
There's more Herb Continent to be had. Not only that, but it is my favorite story in the game once you see the whole thing.
Casinos are hard to pass up though. I think I lost an hour yesterday with save scumming into slot jackpots. I still need to figure out if the pair matching game algorithm is the same, because there were some nice cheat tools online that were built to help you solve those.

Can any vets help me out?

I just hit my first roadblock and my first official "L" - god damn that shit hurt. I'd be lying if I said I didn't almost rage quit.

Anyways, the trouble is with
Stripes and Rasher in all trades abbey dungeon
. These fuckers are giving me a rough time of it. Any tips would be appreciated.

edit- nevermind. I got it done. Decided to sacrifice one of my characters and put them on heal duty while the others attacked. naturally.. they died midway into the battle, but it was not for nothing. Stings that they missed out on some chunky exp though. Oh well.

When I say progress will halt, I mean I will probably end up spending 20-30 hours winning big at the casino and mastering jobs. It is what I did with the original game.

Also, does any one else think that building a inn/pub surrounded by poison swamp is stupid.

This is my first DQ game ever and my first JRPG in I don't know how long. Really enjoying it. Playing it makes me wish there were more RPGs like this on consoles so I could kick back on my couch and play them on my TV like I did in the old days.
