Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

So I'm a few hours in; the game is a slow burn you guys weren't kidding. I'm having a hard time being engaged. Just got to the very first island after solving the temple puzzle. Does the story start to take off?

Also, I'm not much of a graphics junkie but I don't think the game looks as fantastic as most claim. I mean the character models look nice, and the 3D is one of the best, but the towns and fields kinda look a bit standard for a DQ game. Maybe it's cuz I'm playing on the bigger N3DSXL screen. I dunno...

The best parts graphically are definitely the monster designs and some of the battle backgrounds.

The worst part for me is the heavy reuse of NPC models. There's a part where you talk to this professor in the past, return to the present, and then you find him standing there three times right next to each other. Since this was the first time I encountered his model I thought he time traveled and cloned himself until I realized those were just different generic professor dudes.

This somehow never threw me off in the older games with the more symbolic NPC sprites, but with the more detailed models it's a bit confusing to travel all over the planet and always encounter the same people with the same town music. Sure, there's different accents and obviously different stories, but sometimes it feels too samey for such a long game.

I mean, this happens in almost every game that has that many NPCs, but in this game it's a really small pool of people.

The unique NPC models are always delightful, though. The grumpy looking king is hilarious.

Wow. I'm just about to leave that island having resolved it's problems (for now) and thought I must be about to enter the endgame! I'm already at 45 hours without having touched any of the monster tablet stuff or doing any grinding, this must be the longest JRPG I've played.

The robots story is a good story brought down by the backtracking, especially in the present with no random encounters and almost zero dungeon crawling. =/

Curious approximately how many hours I have yet to go. I've
defeated the Demon King, and am on my way to the nomads camp to revive the Almighty.

You've got 4 or so dungeon, field, town segments after you finish that before final dungeon. Also an initial story sequence setting it all up.

Just started this last night, and I'm really starting to remember the things that really annoy me about this series lol. Didn't mind the slow start, but the flow of battles is my biggest gripe with this and DQ8, where all of the actions have to be selected before anyone does anything, especially since the enemy clearly doesn't have this same restriction.

On a different note, how many battles are there that I'm supposed to lose in this game? Don't know if this one counted among them but I read that I can run from the fight against
Maeve
on the tower on the first island. Not worried about spoilers but I'd like to know this sort of stuff ahead of time so I don't waste a bunch of time on long ass battles.

Whats up with some of the interior graphics looking like this? It looks like a glitch.

I think that usually shows up when there's an outside space available on the building like a roof or deck. Sometimes it looks a bit weird, but it's like when the game shows you patches of grass outside the edges of a build's walls.

Stop making me backtrack with stupid excuses. The
mad witch king
storyline is just absurdly paced with stupid backtracking. The game is already packed with content, I don't get why they make you walk the same paths over and over again.

Providence
is the case of that that really got to me. That damn cliff dungeon between the church and town lol.

I 100% understand how this stuff can annoy people, but I think it does a good job setting the mood and making me feel like I'm part of the adventure.

I don't really think of it as I need to go to this waypoint and then this waypoint and more like, oh, I remember this character, she makes medicine and she's in the past and over there, I better get to her.

Makes certain characters and certain regions really memorable. Reminds me of how some people think that One Piece's pacing is ridiculously slow, but I think the show is effing perfect and just continues to impress me as the years go on.

Quick what do I do now question. Just changed vocation for the first time and got the fragment from inside Alltrades and the town, do I have to go find
Zev or is there soething else to do before I go back to the present

Since I recently gloated about not having died yet, obviously immediately after that I hit a boss who wipes me out in like two turns.

Need help though, I'm stuck and an NPC disappeared. If I place the stone on the pedestal in the Cirrus land and then die to the boss after I finish the puzzle, where can I find Fidelia?

Whew, just finished up the game and all the extra content this morning. Clocked in 104 hours or so. Beautiful game, best I've played on the 3DS, and one of the most well written RPGs I've ever played.

Now I can (finally) move on to SMT IV Apocalypse! It's good to be a 3DS owner this year.

I don't mind in those cases, but in this storyline and in Providence, it is just annoying. They make you go through the same dungeon over and over so a key character can tell you "thanks for visiting me, now head back again" without any plot development.

Backtracking hasn't really been a real issue for me until these two storylines. I can't imagine how tedious these sections were with random encounters.

As I recall the sections were (comparatively) short so you don't actually get into any encounters on the way through once you find out the shortest path through. Maybe like one.

Hi, what's the StreetPass like in this game? I read it's like bonus dungeons or something... Is any of it any good?

I actually did the casino in VIII. I've never done them again and don't particularly want to.
Ditto. I dun care much for casino games and this series lack of a Soft Reset feature made me give up on them & their goodies after DQ8!

Is it at least new & unique content?

Whats up with some of the interior graphics looking like this? It looks like a glitch.
Haven't noticed that happen myself so far. Game apparently has alot of glitches an bugs though so it may be one of 'em?

What bugs me graphically is that almost everyone is to tall for doorway so in many scenes they're heads go right through the wall above it o_O

Oh ya The Wizz. Go see him. Why? For 1 line of dialogue? Thanks game. Oh go back to see him he has something for us? Nope. Thanks game. Thanks for the boss fight in that section that seemed winnable but actually wasn't. r.i.p. yggdrasil leaves!

FOUR TIMES

Finished All-Trades Abbey at 21h05m and level 21 (went in at level 18). Didn't realize you could get to Perdition by walking outside, did the entire dungeon down and back up to get the yellow tablet :(.

Haven't died once, which is about what I'd expect for my pacing on equipment. Confused right now why Ruff is advancing super fast on Sailor and MC is not, probably the game not considering the fights hard enough for MC who is two levels above Ruff. Annoying.

But annoying describes a lot about this game, I suppose. Can I get faster dialog skip with a CFW patch? Tempting.

Jeeze, I randomly decided to return to
Alltrades Abbey
in the past and saw that
Nava is basically wasting away in bed due to Zev abandoning her.

I can't remember if there ever was any reason to go back there story-wise, so it was kind of a cool, albeit sad, detail.

Christ. Good to know. Towards the end, I'll go back

I feel like I'm stuck.
The weird floating guy keeps telling me to talk to the fortune teller. She keeps telling me she can't see my fortune. I'm in Emberdale in the present. I'm clearly missing a fragment from somewhere and I have no idea where.

If you're missing a fragment, have you tried checking the "Next Table Fragment" after checking the Info menu?

Its the longest JRPG in history or close to it. I clocked in 140 hours when I finished this game on PSX, granted I mastered all classes for my characters. I think the main quest should take about 60-80 hours depending, if you're the player taking in the sights and landmarks and exlporing.

Where did you respawn because I found that if I left and warped somewhere else and returned later Fidelia would be waiting by the warp entrance.

Beat the main game. ~70 hours, Hero (Max)/Glad (4 star)/Champ (4 star)/Sage (Max) party (Hero, Aishe, Merwyn, Maribel). On to EG and class grinding.

Edit: lol do I have to beat the boss again?
Noticed that Estard had a shard ping during epilogue, but now it doesn't when I load the completed file

Wow, 70 haha. I'd past 80, and I've still got to go
and awaken the almighty!
I don't feel like I've been tkaing it slow or anything though. I spent a lot of extra time in and around
Green thumbs though
making sure I'd got the whole of that scenario.

After getting the first basic jobs the game tells me I acquired skills when leveling those jobs but I can't see the skills in the battle menus? What did I miss?

I finally got around to finishing Nottagen's story. I still think it is one of the best stories in the game. I'm not a fan of the new name though.
I've had enough of the puns in this game! :p

I always feel sad about what happens to Rocky and Chibi. :( I love those guys.

A bit stuck in El Ciclo:

I have stopped the clock tower, and entered the painting. It seems like all I can do in the painting is run around in circles. Is there another painting somewhere, or what?

No, you just have to find your way through the maze haah there is an end point in there.

Your word choice is ironic though, since spoiler for the dungeon:
ther eis in fact a puzzle that involves running in a circle, but I guess you havent found that yet because it's very obvious when you get there

I'm pretty sure you need to drop down somewhere to a portal or something. I'm assuming you're still in the first area in that dungeon.

With Shephard you learn Counting Sheep that sends all enemies to sleep with what seems to be a 90% success rate. It's a really useful move.

Accidentally ejected the game picking up the 3ds and lost about 2 hours progress :(

Normally just quit a game if that happens but I'll power back through

Look for
diamond markings on the floor that indicate you can drop down safely. You're in the right area.

Thank you, and everyone else who helped, didn't even cross my mind that you could do that. It's incredible how much easier the bosses become when you have
Sage & Pirate
in your party. The desert boss almost kicked my ass, whereas this boss wenth very smoothly.
