Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

This is my first DQ, loving it so far.

However, i extremely regret consulting youtube to find a map piece (whatever they're called, mini mcguffins, who cares)... and heard the orchestrated OST that was removed (walkthrough was jp version).

What the actual fuck, Nintendo. That's not acceptable.

What I heard is the composer wouldn't give them the international rights. I can't remember if this is 100% confirmed or not to be the reason.

I'm fairly late game, just cleared
Past-Buccanham
and could really use some advice on where to go next.
The guy in the Shrine of Mysteries mentions a shrine in the sky with more pedestals, but I have no idea how to get there. The big pirate ship remains frozen in ice, and I haven't seen any clues as to how to get it out. I guessed possibly some fire from the present-day Beacon, but didn't actually get anything when I went to the top. The best-Torban-player contest in Hubble still hasn't got off the ground. What am I supposed to do?

I've tried that multiple times, is there some trick to it? Does it need to be used from my hero's inventory or something? Only the water accessory seems to do anything in that room.

You can actually use all four in that room. I'm not sure if you have to be, but I used them all in the middle of the room right in front of the water.

Try the shrine near Frobisher/Faraday Castle. Should be East.

Hmmm all of them should. Stand in place you used water for all. I did then in various inventories.

Approaching the end of the game,
have to go get the earth and wind(?) spirits now.

Is it worth putting Maribel through Jester and Troubador, then Luminary to finally become a Druid, or should I just keep her as a maxed out Sage for the rest of the game?

Currently have the hero as a maxed out Champion, with Aishe about to unlock Champion, and Ruff has just started Hero (but I might switch him out for Mervyn in the end, Ruff seems the weakest of the five).

Yesterday I did a good 3 hours of grinding. My main character is paladin lvl 5 now I got multi heal and that thin air attack is really good to end quickly normal encounter :)

I also mastered a bunch of vocations for other characters, Ruff is now a monster masher.
Not sure which class I will turn
Sir Mervyn
into yet . And I will go gladiator for
Aishe

Other question, I tried to follow a guide I found on Gamefaqs, I'm trying to recruit people for The Haven because it seems I missed a lot of them, on the guide It says Emberdale Tavern (there is no tavern in Emberdale) I tried both past and present and after talking to everyone no one asked to go to the haven so anyone can help me on that ?

Now to get the gear from each path and suicide to the boss because for some reason it doesn't allow you to Evac or Zoom out and there's no way I'm sitting through the epilogue four times.

Haven recruits are all in the present day. Emberdale's tavern is the one where the young man and his bedridden mother used to live in.

Druid is a very good class. Troubadour and especially jester level up quick. Not so much luminary. That said, luminary does learn hustle dance, which is excellent. Shame skills from advance classes don't transfer in this version.

I say worth it, though this late Ito the game you're going t be grinding

Druid is pretty good, but worth noting that it doesn't have multiheal. You'd either have to rely on hustle dance, have another healer (or mitigate it with the sage stones), or master heal slime so you can have multiheal there. Casting cheap big bangas is pretty sweet though.

That worked. Thanks!

You should be able to evac as soon as you open the chests. That's what I did.

Does Aishe ever end up learning Sword Dance? Just seems to fit her character well. I think mine was 40 when I moved on to other games without really diving into the EG (did the dungeon up to
God
, but never fought him). She learned one of those luminary revive dances by leveling, so she has that outside of class, but it seemed to me sword dance was tied to her being a hero or a pirate.

Idk. Class system in general leaves me a bit unenthused. Unbalanced, bloated ability lists; lack of defined character roles and abilities; get it too late, etc. Really the weakest aspect of the game in my mind and it seems that what the EG is about is grinding classes, so I skipped out.

Hustle dance is better than multiheal, so the loss isn't that big a deal

I don't agree personally. It's 0 MP, sure, but it heals less. Sometimes that can make a difference, and you won't have to heal as often. MP really isn't a big deal in my opinion. Never had any worry about running out, especially if you're talking about a druid.

Not by normal level-up, no. She does have a unique animation when using it though, which is neat. Makes it a bit strange that she wouldn't learn it naturally.

Similarly, the hero has a unique animation for blade of ultimate power.

You forgot to close your spoiler tag incidentally.

Thanks for the catch.

Yeah she is a dancer and she is inclined to physical attack and swords particularly, just seems such an obvious fit.

I'm still really early. Just finished up with Maeve.
I ran from the battle because I wanted to give the doll, but I didn't have it in my inventory, it was in my bag. Didn't expect fleeing to end it.

Thanks yesterday for the help gaf, can't find my exactb post but appreciated the help :)

Made good progress toasty, nearly finished nottagen and levelled up a bit level 28 now,

I got stuck in the Cathedral of Light. I had talked to everyone but you-know-who would not appear. Reloaded my save from inside the Cathedral and the same thing happened. Damn near cried.

Turns out I needed answer both yes and no to the guy from Grondal. Phew!

In the final dungeon now and wow the AI has no concept or preserving MP. "fight wisely" my ass.

Fight Wisely is basically Show Mercy but they'll also use status moves and healing as well if it'll make the fight easier. You'll need to set them to Use No Magic or select their moves manually if you want to conserve MP.

Yeah realised that.

I also just accidentally finished the game.:/

I went past the point of no return and then didn't really try in the fight but still won. I hadn't got all the loot.:(

Make sure to get fragment in Estard town during the epilogue!!! Can just use the items for the EG :p

Or not do the EG like me...so I guess I'm being dumb.

Also just noticed 20 mins late.

Ha, I literally just picked up that fragment. Probably would have missed it without the indicator!

Maxed troubadour while getting the other two spirits, so now I'll grind up jester before tackling the final dungeon.

Also, going to blow all my money on upgrades now that I'm at the end, does anything have better stuff than on the boat? Have 225k gold.

Buy 3 Dragon Robes for 120k? (Mervyn can't equip it) Then I could grind a little to afford 4 Silver Shields.

Would also be handy to know what good equips I'm going to find in the final dungeon :p

Not that you can simply buy. There's a Metal King Shield you can get from tokens (90), but there's just one of those (there's also another one you can get from a DLC tablet, but the boss would probably be a bit tough for you right now). Metal King helms from Buccanham Casino for anyone who can wear them or the golden tiara from the style contest in El Ciclo for the women. Metal King Armor from the Haven casino for those who can use it. For Ruff, Orichalcum Fangs from a chest in the maxed out Haven, Gringham whip from medals if you can get that high (105) for whoever. If you don't want to bother with all of that, the stuff you can buy now is fine :p

There are also some pieces of equipment you can get from the final dungeon. Minor spoiler about the final dungeon:
There will be a point where you need to use one of the amulets you got from the 4 elements to progress past a dead end. There will be a chest with a piece of equipment on each route, if you evac after you grab the equipment, you can reenter, go to that same spot, use another amulet, and repeat. There's a pretty decent helm, shield, armor, and the best sword that you can get

If you need more money, there are gem slimes you can find outside of a few places, like Grondal.

When you say pretty decent helm, shield and armor what are we talking? Better or worse than dragon robe and silver shield?
I think I'm just gotta buy those and be done with it, can't be bothered with the casino, having the absolute best items isn't necessary.

The only shields that are really the "best" are the DLC Tablet exclusive Goddess Shield and the mini-medal/DLC exclusive Metal King Shield. Also the DLC Tablet Exclusive Shimmering Shield is pretty good as well.

The others have various holes in some way or another. The Silver Shield doesn't protect against Ice Breath, the final dungeon shield doesn't protect against fire breath. The Dragon Shield protects against both but only at like half the resistance, etc. Not sure you can say which one is really the best.

Could use some help,
just finished Hubble and got the fragment in The Wizz's grave, but don't have enough to continue to the next island. What am I missing?

Just beat the game at 67:06. Had to do quite a bit of grinding at the end as I was on level 30-32 the first time I took on the final boss and got my ass handed to me. Luckily the presence of metal king slimes in the final dungeon made it fairly east to get to level 34-36 and then I was able to handle him without much of a problem.

Overall, the game was excellent. Definitely superior to the PSX version although they didn't change as much as I thought. Being able to reload a quicksave without the quicksave deleting was quite handy. But the clunkier UI and midi music does suck. Also, I was under the impression that they had done a lot more to speed up the game. Just the little pauses in all the cutscences where characters have to walk into position or turn around, or just long pauses between dialogue for no reason. I was hoping they'd streamline that more.

Now do I finally open my copy of Builders or go right into the post game?

what does the "next fragment" menu under info say

e: go talk to the queen on the desert

This was the only fragment I got stuck on the entire game. The fact that the fragment detector doesn't even light up until you talk to the queen really throws you off.

When you talk to the present Queen, she talks about taking care of 'the item you got from the past Queen' of which you haven't actually gotten yet so you go back and get it then. There also seems to be some other triggers for that event that I'm not clear on which makes it kind of complicated. If you just go back there straight after talking to the present queen, I don't believe the event to get the item from the past queen triggers. You have to accomplish some other stuff.

That's definitely the most commonly missed fragment in the game I'd say.

Finally started back up playing after vacation (with early morning and red eye flights where I slept instead of played), and after doing a little job grinding for the luls.

Post Alltrades

I'm at the Desert climbing the Likeness of Great Evil. Good to get back into the story flow of things, even though I've had to leave twice for vocation changing reasons

Something that confuses me, and maybe I'm just not seeing it, is that if I set them to Use No Magic or Fight Wisely, they can tap into moves/spells that don't seem to be available to me when I use the characters manually.

I think that's because sometimes when an ability is used, it doesn't say the actual name of the ability. For example, I believe for Scorch (or one of the breath attacks), rather than saying "Ruff used Scorch," it says something like "Ruff lets loose with a fierce fire"

I'm about 8 hours in (got my fourth party member recently) and am enjoying the game, but have one growing concern with the structure of the game. It seems like for every island I've gone to so far, after completing the story for that area I end up having to go through the same exact dungeon again to get another map fragment piece.

Is this going to be consistent with what to expect for the duration of the game? Complete vignette, go back to the regular world and visit the island again to traverse the same dungeon that I just completed to get another map fragment?

I love everything else about the game, but to me it's just tiring to do what feels like repeat content.

It happens, but not to the extent that you see in the Rainbow Mines and the cave with the sealed demon in the coffin. Those are pretty much the most egregious examples of straight up re-treading dungeons in the present.

Had to do Vogograd and Buccaham twice. HAD beaten them both, but then accidentally ejected the cart and had not saved in quite some time.

That kind of sucked.

Guys do we need to collect mini-medals to finish the main story? I'm not a completionist at all and I fear that will be a thing.

Nope

You can get a fragment for the postgame but it's not required at all for the main story. There are a bunch of missables too so don't worry about it.

I don't think you can miss them. Some people only show up after passing certain points in the game, but the Emberdale recruit should certainly be there (and probably 3-4 more?) at your point in the game.

Ugh, no idea why those are spring loaded. I commute by motorcycle and often have it in my satchel/messenger bag and every now and then it will just randomly be half-ejected when I get home. feelsbadman.gif.

Hah, that was a cute callback (close to endgame spoilers)
during the part of the game where you only have Mervyn in your party and he acts as the protagonist, all of the fights are 1 on 1 with the monster centered on the camera like the original Dragon Quest game.

Alright, beat the game at 78 hours.

Final party:
Ben (hero): Level 40 Champion
Aishe: Level 37 Champion
Sir Mervyn: Level 36 Champion
Maribel: Level 36 Sage

Final boss was a breeze with them.

Is the postgame worthwhile? Any story stuff?

Missing one fragment for the first optional dungeon. Haven't got the one from the casino yet, and I stopped looking for monsters for the Haven early on if there's a fragment from there (I assume it'll be very quick to find everyone with a guide in postgame).
If I do postgame I'll finish putting Maribel through Troubadour so I can make her a Druid. Gave up grinding it up because I figured I was strong enough for the final boss regardless :p

Postgame might be worth it if you want to find out a bit more of the world, yeah.

Afaik, there are 2 bonus dungeons each with a boss at the end.

For the first one, make sure you are very prepared and you bring your best equipment and luck cause that boss can be reaaaaally tough. You'll have to pray to the RNGeezus
to win 3 battles in under 20 turns of nonsense
. 2nd bonus dungeon should give you no trouble. I'd also recommend having Mulitheal on Maribel since Druid doesn't learn it for some reason. And that healing dance is awful, never want to use it.

And I never did post my final party did I? IIRC I took around 71-2 hours (took my time, searched around a lot, grinded a bit, and spammed party chat like no tomorrow).

Hero: Around level 40; Hero class
Maribel: Around level 40; Druid
Sir Mervyn: Above level 35; Armamentalist
Aishe: Above level 35; Champion

Final boss was mostly easy peasy, but having Multiheal helped out a big deal.
