Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

I do wonder, though, to what extent this could or will damage Edge's relationship with Microsoft.

They could pull advertising for example.

This is the most outright side-taking I've ever seen them do, on such a level, and it'll be interesting to see how MS responds.

I think this would have been better..

Ooh, I don't know. They say Titanic errors underneath the MS text box. Maybe they just saw some screenshots of it and came to a hasty conclusion.

THIS ^^ is from E3 2005 where SONY clearly did NOT have a good showing. It just shows how biased EDGE have been towards SONY. The article reads, 'SONY shows MS how to launch a console at E3'

- $599 console
- terrible dev support
- nightmare to program for
- 'we want ppl to work 2 jobs to afford it'
- RIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER

...that was a year later.

They will flip in a couple months and back Xbone pretty much the whole coming generation, just wait and see.

Good to see Edge not hiding its bias anymore. I'd wager that Microsoft will pull ad support and let them do what most print media does on its own... slowly die off.

I don't have a problem with this cover at all. It reflects what a vast majority on this board and elsewhere after E3 felt.

You are really bending history here. Sony had bad showing on E3 2006 when they announced price. In 2005 they showcased console architecture and awesome tech demos [and CGI]. :)

Please look back on your history. E3 '05 was before all this, when PS3 was a vision (literally) of next-gen wonder with a tonne of high profile franchise representation compared to the reality of Microsoft's box, warts-and-all. It was hugely smoke-and-mirrors, but at the time that wasn't so evident and it was a box full of promise, basically.

The response should be interesting. I can't expect Microsoft to break off their relationship to EDGE if it is as influential in Europe as people say (as far as magazines are concerned).

You mean the CGI companies that Sony outsourced all their 'in-game' footage to had a good E3 showing?

I don't even remember what MS did that E3 though, so I guess there's that.

Along with their hardware reveal it seems like a good conference.

As long as the article itself justifies why they're saying that on the cover then I don't see how anyone can claim it to be hyperbolic.

Before the DRM reversal 99% of GAF would have agreed with it.
The reversal doesn't automatically bring things on an even keel again, for one thing the whole debacle completely destroys consumer confidence in Microsoft because they've completely reversed their 'vision' for the platform. Who's to say they won't bring back some of these policies twelves months down the line?
There's reason enough to continue to wholly back PS4, not everybody needs to take an objective view imo.

As someone said on this board regarding the reversal, just because someone wipes their spit off my face, it doesn't make me forget how it got there.

Kinda reminds me of a Fox News article or something.

"After being humiliated by his more intelligent and handsome competitors at SONY and badly fumbling a simple question at E3, Xbox head and part time child drug dealer Don Matrick slithered out of his office at Microsoft to take up the role of CEO at Zynga."

And I think its disgusting that people want to forget that MS tried to screw so much gamers.

With all due to respect to Microsoft, this needs to be remembered clearly so this kind of shitstorm would not be repeated in the future. [Though I expect it will by a wide margin when digital takes over physical, if that does in fact happen].

The same went for Sony with their $599 price tag on the PS3. It was remembered for years and ultimately served as a very good lesson for Sony which actually had an impact in the end.

I think most people would agree that Microsoft decimated Sony's E3 game showing. Barely even a contest.

Their respective console reveals, however...

I don't exactly agree. I think they did have a stronger showing of new games at E3 obviously, but bside from Titanfall, what big coups did they have? Last gen they had Gears, Bioshock, ME...

Considering the PS line up at this end of this gen was much stronger than MS, I don't think it is surprising that people aren't that concerned the sony hasn't shown it's big games yet... I mean I would say the PS3 line up this year is much stronger than what is going to initially hit PS4 or Xbone.

I'm not going to indulge in list warz with you, but six of the 'games' on that list were present only as CGI trailers and of those one was never released (EYEdentify). Also my point was that declaring one console or another 'the winner' is not at all out of the ordinary for EDGE.

I'm surprised people are taking such issue with this. Being unbiased does need mean forgoing an opinion. I'm glad they feel strongly enough about their opinion to publish it.

Microsoft's recent behaviour is deserving of criticism, regardless of their game library or whatever else of theirs you may be a fan of.

People comparing this to old covers are way off the mark, the story here is not the pro-Sony headline, but the knife they're thrusting into the gut of Microsoft:

"HOW MICROSOFT BLEW IT
The Titanic Errors On Xbox One's Road to Ruin
"

Pretty unprofessional for a supposedly neutral magazine

While I haven't seen them go (apparently) this all-out before, Edge has always carried an opinionated voice. They usually leave some wiggle room, some 'ifs and buts' - and I guess they have here too - even if the overall tone is very strongly one-way.

My view:
PS4: Excellent specs, long term investment
X1: Great launch lineup.

It's a tough choice honestly, though a few weeks ago it was unanimously PS4 thanks to MS's wonderful DRM policies.

I'm hoping they've had some good hands on time with both consoles.

Stating that before they've even touched them properly is a bit much.

I'll wait till they come out and see what's actually going on with both thanks.

Kinda reminds me of a Fox News article or something.

Fucking hell.........

The very notion people are comparing an opinion piece in a magazine (which NO ONE has even fucking read at this point) to American partisan politics is ludicrous and, frankly, depressing.

Is this generation so used to being fed PR approved spin that anything resembling an opinion about anything now suddenly offensive and utterly bewildering?!

...., unless you were joking. :P

This is exactly how MS will feel when the XONE is flying off the shelves and EDGE are crying for content.

Some people aren't afraid to show their stripes eh? Won't the biggest Xbones games be third party anyway, they won't have trouble getting info on those.

Great launch lineup means nothing to 95% of gamers who will not manage to buy console at launch anyway. Consistency of great game releases is way more important.

I thought Sony said that they haven't revealed all their PS4 games yet? The Last Guardian, Naughty Dog team 2, Guerilla Games team 2, Quantic Dream and Media Molecule still have to announce their PS4 games, probably on Gamescom and TGS.

Perhaps, but right now, not one gamer I know is happy about Xbox One regarding price and/or Kinect and they loathe MS for their initial tact of portraying their entire customer base as nothing more than potential thieves that can neither be trusted or listened to who must accept renting everything they buy.

Everything you say is from E3 2006.

During E3 2005 we saw amazing bullshots, trailers, vastly better specs, etc. We didn't get price, Ridge Racer, etc until E3 2006.

A lot of people thought PlayStation 3 was the way forward in 2005.
