I remember when I was 17 or whatever it was -- watching The Phantom Menace on opening night. No one was more hyped than me for Star Wars. I wore out my Empire Strikes Back VHS.

I remember being so distracted by the idiocy of the story construction and baffled by the lack of a central main character or anyone with any personality that I couldn't enjoy it at all.

Why did Qui-Gon Jin need to even exist? I never understood that. Why did they go so out of the way to bend things as far away from what the OT set up as possible? The OT made it sound like Obi Wan was Yoda's apprentice (when in reality he was just a baby in some preschool jedi farm overseen by Yoda or whatever, apparently) and they made it sound like Obi Wan and Anakin were close friends. Instead, Obi Wan and Anakin seem to generally dislike eachother and he only trained him because Qui-Gon asked him to. It's so needlessly convoluted and stupid.

I saw a youtube video mention this once -- But basically, if my old friend Anakin went crazy and choked his pregnant wife after murdering a bunch of helpless children, I wouldn't look back on him with fondness and reflect on the good old days. I would feel really uncomfortable at his very mention.

If you were friends with Adam Lanza before Sandy Hook, would you years later sit back and smile wistfully about your good friend Adam Lanza?

Obi Wan and Anakin did like and respect each other very much in between Episode 1 and 3. As poorly as it's handled, there is a progression in their relationship. In Episode 2, Anakin's headstrong and will disobey Obi Wan if he thinks that his way is better. In Episode 3 he's proven himself to be just as capable as Obi-Wan but still does his best to listen to him and take his advice. He's learned from a lot of his mistakes Obi Wan knows this, so their relationship is more buddy-buddy than student-teacher. Obi Wan's account of Anakin to Luke was him trying to shelter Luke from the horrible truth and attempting to establish that Anakin's transition was so dramatic that he no longer sees them as the same person, and in a lot of ways, they aren't. Vader is more or less an alternate personality of Anakin later on, but it doesn't really show outside of Episode 6 and that scene in the Clone Wars show where Vader fought Ahsoka where he goes from conflicted to "then you will DIE."

if you attribute his actions to mental illness then maybe. that actually would be an interesting interpretation of anakin's actions. i don't think he's consistent enough to fit anything specific though

No.. No, you wouldn't. You'd only be filled with regret and perhaps even feel sick at the very mention of his name. Maybe it helps take the impact of massacring children away if you call them "younglings".

George Lucas is completely insane.

Throughout Episode 2 Obi Wan mostly just complains about what an arrogant asshole Anakin is, and Anakin acts like a petulant brat the entire time, screaming and crying about how everything is Obi-Wan's fault. If they were "good friends" it happened off screen.

The proper way to have handled Anakin Skywalker was to make him a good person who was ultimately seduced by the dark side. Keep it straightforward. Instead, Anakin is portrayed as a bad apple from the start and he massacres children in two different movies!

It did happen off-screen. Most of their positive interactions happened off screen. A bunch of noodle incidents.

I don't have deep enough interactions with conservatives to know for sure, but you're probably right. This idea that we need to surround and attack any ideological impurity is so harmful.
try saying something positive about clinton around a tea party person. they automatically hate you. same with questioning their ideas of tax policies and a bunch of other stuff. doesn't matter if 9/10 things you agree on, theres a few key issues where they automatically write you off as not worth talking to if you disagree on

if i remember right, obi wan sounded like he was mourning a lost friend which fits if anakin started developing schizophrenia or something and it wasn't his actual choice to go down that path

he seems like he's in control of himself (well besides his emotions) so that doesn't actually work

really another solution (well not to those issues but ot the issue of his motivation to kill everyone) is to actually convince us he'd be willing to destroy the entire universe for padme. their relationship was so awkward...

lol please don't make me also fully litigate this... all we see happen is him acting like a whining baby in front of her, making creepy comments, making fascist remarks, massacring women and children before bringing home a corpse, and then going on a megalomaniacal rant... And that = romantic sparks for some girls, I guess.

its the weirdest relationship. he acts immature, she treats him like he needs supervision, yet somehow they were a thing (and that was before the whole facist/murdery phase)

I've tried and failed. (Got close in one occasion) Did you enjoyed sucking your own dick?

It was just the tip. It didn't really feel like much of anything, but I have dreams about going farther.

I feel like I may have said too much about this, which was originally just a joke.

Of course. He needed a soft touch to guide him. That's not something you can get from sand. It's rough and coatse, and it gets everywhere

watch episode 2 and try to imagine padme is an actual girl in real life, especially one who has options, and try and think of the dialogue going on in her head each time anakin whines or says something creepy or does something horrible.

it's just so beyond implausible that she'd go for him

Oh I know. Her reaction to him slaughtering the sand people was baffling. But she knew how much he hated sand.
