Final Fantasy VII PC re-release. SE Store Exclusive - Out now, Internet required

I hope this works with the PS1 rpg controller through usb adapter.

I always wanted an ASCII Grip but couldn't find one anywhere.

Hopefully I'm not the first person to mention the obvious "Cloud" save joke.

But anyway, I don't know how to feel about this. It seems like they're side stepping on actually creating a remake, which people have wanted for years now. I don't see this port being too successful...character booster? Oh lawd.

What is there to think about? We are in 2012, ridiculous that we couldn't buy this game online eariler and still hate the fact that it is not coming to Steam for now at least.

$$$

FFVII sells like no other FF. Isn't it still the best selling ps1 classic on psn?

Yeah this will sell well, if they put it on Steam and no shitty DRM added.

I'm interested... I had recently been thinking about how Square should put a free PC version of FFVII on the internet so that everyone who was slightly interested in it could get acquainted with this amazing classic, but a new version with features like achievements sounds good too.

At first I read the topic title like "Final Fantasy XII announced for PC, System Spec" and I got even more excited... I really want an HD version of FFXII.

Replaying Final Fantasy XII right now on a 720p television with component cables on the PS2 in widescreen mode and I swear Final Fantasy XII looks less pixelated than Xenoblade Chronicles on the same television. Final Fantasy XII runs at 480i and Xenoblade Chronicles at 480p.

I think Final Fantasy XII would look fantastic in HD.

So what kind of shitty DRM are they adding to this and what will I have to put up with by signing up with the SE store?

Probably some sort of "always on" internet DRM. If DRM free and I can install it on any of my PCs then I might bite since my original PC discs are damaged.

That's because the Wii has some of the worst video output of any console, ever. Even over component.

Square-Enix store exclusive? Sounds like a decision handed down from HQ in Japan. Too bad they aren't putting it on any of the relevant DD shops.

This is SQEENIX pushing the envelope.

HD remakes? nah, fuck that, we'll just repackage the same game and watch the $$ pour in.
Not really, they've been doing this for years.

So have many companies, actually. And it also makes sense if you put away the "hey, who cares I can just download a rom" logic for a second. Old games have a limited quantity of copies that exist. Thus making digital distribution a good idea. For everyone, for people who want to just buy a copy legitimately and not good look for a torrent or ddl somewhere. And don't to pay for used copies at inflated prices. And it's good for companies, because they get to make profit out of their product, like they, well, have a right to. Without having to heat up the old press and make copies of the same game again for an outdated platform not as many people are using. Publishers and developers don't make any money out of used sales.

Also, with digital distribution, it's naturally better to have your game on as many platforms as possible. And there's hardly a platform any more universe than the PC. Not everyone owns a Wii, PlayStation 3, or XBOX 360. But pretty much everyone owns a computer.

I don't see why anyone should be disappointed with a company trying to make money off of the product they own and created. And it certainly doesn't hurt the customers to have more options for buying.
god, it still look like a pile of shit.
at least update the character models a bit, like RE:DS did.
Looks just fine to me. I don't understand what many people like about super duper graphics in everything. If anything, 16-Bit sell me on a game more than anything. That is, when I actually look at graphics at all.

To me, Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64 looks better than most modern games.

Sure, I like old textures to look their best. And hope they at least have some kind of minor updates, if just the same anti-alias filters you get from emulation. But I think the old textures look simply charming.

The irony is that everything done with this was possible with the PC version+some mods as well as the PS1 version using an emulator. The best way to play the game is still with a good ole CRT + a decent speaker system

That is, if you go to all the of the trouble to work around and get the old PC version to work in modern times. And then doing mods adds an extra degree of work. And for the PlayStation version, you need to get the latest(which is pretty old, really) version of ePSXe, Pete's Plugin, and find a way to extract the BIOS of a PlayStation system you own, or download them illegally. That's work, and somewhat legally ambiguous, sadly.

Having another version that is friendly and official on the PC, is nice.

Oh for sure no doubt. I welcome re-releases like this because it allows people who haven't gotten into the franchise at all to try it. I own the game for PC and PS1(and I have the know how for emulation too) so I did this all way back. I just find it funny that one of the big selling features of the game is something that I did when I played the PC version way back.

Wonder if mod community can get stuff to work on this version or if it will get you banned as the game has achievements. I already got ff7 for pc and have it looking nice but would be cool to check out this version too.

Stupid questions, but here we go.

1. I noticed that the site is for the European version of SE. Was an US press release also released?

2. Ok, we have to buy on the SE store instead of Steam. Is it kinda like GOG where I can redownload it at any time by using my login?

Thanks

Yeah, I tried it out the other day and it looks WONDERFUL.

Looks wonderful but doesn't play as smooth as it does on the PS2, well not on my PC anyway. You get slowdown from time to time and this slows down the music too, it can be really distracting.

I started playing it on the PC with a 360 controller but after a while I started a new game on the PS2 and it felt better. Lost save states though.

I can also confirm that it looks great. So do most PlayStation 2 games, actually. They look modern and sleek as heck. But then again, I'm pretty easily impressed and care a lot more about aesthetic than graphics.

I'm a pretty big emulation fan and have been doing this sort of thing for years. I enjoy how easy it is to emulate PlayStation 2 and Gamecube games now on today's hardware.

It also reinforces my fantasies about things like this. I was there for the news when it was stated there was Final Fantasy VII data in Steam. But I had heard that it was cancelled. So this news was honestly kinda shocking to me.

I think that there's a chance to see the PlayStation 2 games hit the PC officially someday. If that is, Final Fantasy VII does really well. I anticipate that if it's possible, and Square Enix really cares, they would follow up the Final Fantasy VII with a re-release of Final Fantasy VIII on the PC, since it also already has a PC version. If those two do really, really well, I can imagine them maybe bringing some of the other PlayStation games and SNES games over to the PC. And then maybe finally it would be worth their while to bring newer titles like PlayStation 2 or even 3 games over.

I can't help but assume they are doing this because the programming is easy. And that bringing over an SNES game to Windows 7 would be a lot easier than bringing a PlayStation 2 game.

Hope my posts aren't on the 'too wordy' side.

Ran extremely smooth for me which was surprising since I've played a few games to completion in this lately and XII ran pretty much perfectly.

Achievements would have been a selling point if they were tied to GFWL.
But then GFWL would have been a negative selling point.

Lose Lose situation.

I'm curious to know how much VII has sold on PSN... too bad neither Square or Sony will say. IIRC they once said it did over 200k the first week it was on sale in the US.

All i can assume is it didn't pass 1 million sales.
Since holding back on revealing that kind of number is beyond dumb.

It mustve broken the 1 million mark by now, and if it didnt it should certainly do it with the crazy PSN sales now.

I think SE is testing the waters on releasing more of their library, and this is just the spearhead. I kind of wish they put more effort into it, though.

Still haven't played any Final Fantasy, will probably wait on this one. I'm more interested in the NES/SNES versions right now. Too bad they're all expensive as hell. Still, Steam or GOG Square. Not buying from you.

Best part about this is the high quality scans of the old Nomura designs for the half of the playable cast + Sephiroth. Would hope for more freebie downloadable FF7 art but oh well.

Please tell me this is not the crappy PC version with the midi music.
It was midi on the Playstation, too.

It's possible that they replaced it with MP3s. It's been possible to do that with the PC version via a mod for a long time now, anyway.
Or you can just download the Playstation midi soundfonts. PC is the only way you want to play FFVIII these days, for example.

Did the PC version of VII do the same as VIII and have the backgrounds and movies rendered at DVD resolution rather than PS resolution?

But I can play it on emlulator any time. I'll think about it if they break out the highres assets for backgrounds. Give us the goods you never gave, Square!

I can't imagine that anyone that is letting the choice of digital vendor completely prevent them from playing the port wants to play the port all the much in the first place.

Honestly, I'd be more excited if this was FF12 instead. Watched that video, game has not aged well graphically and looks like trash. Early 3d polygon days ftl.

Also, I HOPE the music is now much higher bit-rate than the MIDI of the original version. This may take some extra juice too.

One of the first mods that came out for the original FF7 PC version was to let you use your own MP3s for the music tracks.
