Gonna post this here, not directed towards anyone, just something from the main topic:

Are you guys getting lost not checking the menu out or something? Its pretty direct. Say like with Limsa or Ul'dah starting, sure there are a few random npcs making the same trip as you, but its pretty much a straight line to your first destination.

After that the game teaches you the basics of how to fight, following up with some member of the adventurers guild giving you a run down of whats up in the city and where you should go next (usually an aetheryte at the nearest area right outside town). You go there, and then the npc linkshell icon (like a cell phone) lights up and you use the main menu to check it. If you dont feel like doing that, just check your journal after you see "____quest has been updated" to see where you should go next.

Its really not as hard as some people are making it out to be. The little emote training after awhile does seem odd (dunno about Gridania, apparently it's suffering some animation glitch), but the once you get a grip on what they want you to do (italicized words and emote animation examples) its smooth sailing throughout.

The NPCs even have their own chat boxes (important ones anyway) so you can pay attention to whats going on without getting chat flooded by others around you. Dunno if there will be regular side npc quests in retail (I believe they'll still be in the for of leves, but maybe something from those aetheryte nodes aka small check points?).

I don't understand what other people are doing in this, they seem to just stand around doing nothing.

Reminds me of Home, except without the dancing.

I was just gonna reply to you in other thread. Of the melee classes I think the one I see the least is Archer and Lancer before that. I see plenty of Gladiators and Pugilists. I want to say it goes:

GLD
PUP
MAR
LNC
ARC

Really though when the game launches since anyone can change their class at anytime by simply just equipping a different weapon it won't matter which class you start off as.

True. I guess its just since the job system is so open, i'm really not sure how people will decide who will be what class whenever they do party together.

Maybe i'm just putting too much thought into this...

The game right now is at such an early point there is no focus on"we need class x and y," to exp. I still haven't been with a Gladiator who has provoke so no tanks can really hold hate. Mages lost MP so fast they can't exactly heal you constantly since they can only restore it at the crystals.(I'm sure alchy pots will be available later on though to help with this, as well as gear with mp regen)

I saw a leaked list of classes someone put up once here for this game. I think they showed Assassin and Samurai. So for me eventually I'd like to play one of those two. Until then I'll do Marauder since it's a big DD on impact. Pugilist is more of a damage over time. Lancer I saw has abilities to transfer hate to a tank in front of them as well as give TP to members. Archer I'm not aware of but I'm guessing it fits in line with Marauder to do damage on impact, and later on will probably be used to kite enemies around or take hate off someone who's going to die.

I'd play whatever you are liking in the beta. Get a taste of it all now so you know what to focus on when the game launches. :)

I don't see a whole lot of standing around, except at that quest crystal hub. Maybe they're doing what I'm doing, just looking at all the hilarious names. There's like, zero middle ground in this game; all the names are awesome or godawful. I can't recall any examples from last night because I was fairly inebriated, but there were some real gems.

What kills me is when I'm running around confused as hell with nothing to do, and I see all these people apparently running purposefully towards their objective.

Quest Names:
Get to the Copper!
Meet the Flint Stones
:lol

Things you can do:
8 Guildleves(then wait 48 hours) Battlecraft/tutorial recommended.
Finish up the only story quest. Check your journal to see what's next.
Start up a crafting class. They have local leves that don't go with the 8 others above.
Help others with their leves. You get exp they get more exp. Win/win.
Make a small group of peeps, grind some mobs.
Try a bethest.

*Bethest* It's sorta like a guildleve, but only 15 people can join. You can party together if you want or not, but know that you can't engage monsters of people you aren't in a party with, so try to party up for it. You can find these at the camps outside of town. A NPC with the title battle warden gives them. He spawns about every hour or so somewhere in the camp. In Limsa's camp he spawns to the east by the fence near a fire.

I think that's about everything the beta is letting people get at. They really need to include more in the beta for us to test so there is less problems at launch for game crashing bugs.

Aren't you the one who said the Thanalan (that's the "stoopid name" for the area outside of Ul'dah) music sucks? You mean this song? (about 0:20 in)

Though yeah, they do need to fix mob spawns out there.

OK controller question. I didn't see it in the config options. Any way to button press to holster weapon after fights to get that HP regen going faster? What's the default keyboard button for it?

Use the torrent in the d*****/metainfo folder. Itll be finished in 2 mins tops.

EDIT: Again, heres how to do it:

-Goto \Users\*User*\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\d96437e6\metainfo and find the D2010.09.04.2000 torrent or any other patches you might need.
-Use your favorite torrent program to download the torrent.
-When finished, goto the directory that it download to and find the D2010.09.04.2000.patch file. It will be a few folders deep but yould find it. Copy it.
-Paste the .patch file into \Users\*User*\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\d96437e6\patch
-Rerun the updater

Its in the Gamepad options. Its called Active/Passive mode

I did this and nothing happens. It just tries to download the newest patch.

thx for the tip , but no dice it just sits there on downloading 1/6.. does it take a while before it sees the full patch is there?

Their distro method is horrible and really off putting.

Does anyone know exactly what the elemental attributes affect? I've been told is elemental resistance, but does it affect the damage of your elemental spells, and your damage to enemies of that element?

In P2 it did increase your magic attack of the element chosen, yeah.

This is a bit wierd.

I patched to the latest version earlier today, then fired teh game up, had a look at the character creation screen, but decided to wait and play it later. I have just gone back to it, and when I've loaded it, it's downloading a patch again, which it downloaded earlier today.
